What Causes Mould and How Do You Get Rid of It?

At some point in our lives, we’ll all have to tackle mould when it comes to the properties we live and work in. It can be a nightmare situation, but if you understand the causes you can get rid of the offending mould quickly and efficiently.

What Causes Mould?

Condensation is the main cause of mould in most properties. Condensation happens, as air hold water vapour. Simple things such as breathing (we’re not saying you should stop!!) can release water vapour into the air. Air can only hold a small amount of water vapour, when it gets warm, the air can hold even more water vapour. Condensation happens when this warm air full of water vapour hits a cold surface, like your windows and walls. When your car windows fog up with mist on a morning, that’s condensation! The water vapour in the air turns into droplets of water as soon as it hits the surface.

It’s normal to see a little condensation around your property on particularly cold days, or in rooms such as kitchens where there is a lot of heat. Condensation creates the perfect environment for mould to grow. You can also encourage condensation and mould by using excessive heat, so don’t crank up the heating unnecessarily, and think about making improvements such as energy saving windows. They’ll save you energy and help to reduce condensation!
