How To Paint Glossy And Slick Surfaces

Our 3-step guide shows you how to paint glossy, impermeable surfaces with Zinsser B-I-N, a primer with exceptional adhesion.

The Benefits

Painting glossy, impermeable surfaces requires a primer with exceptional adhesion. Our guide below shows how to use Zinsser’s B-I-N Primer Sealer to suitably prime tricky glossy surfaces for finishing with Zinsser Perma-White in over 4,000+ RAL, NCS and BS colours.

The quick application suits businesses and public services wanting to spruce up surfaces and rebrand their premises with a fresh lick of paint, able to transform a glossy surface after a few hours preparing and painting.

Zinsser listens to contactors and develops new products – or adds features to existing products – to meet their changing needs, delivering world class products that meet “real world” challenges, providing tried and tested solutions to painting problems, such as painting MDF.

Step 1. Surface Preparation

Make sure the glossy and slick surface is clean and dry, clear of anything that could interfere or affect the application and adhesion of Zinsser products and materials to be applied.

Loose and failing materials should be removed by scraping or brushing with a stiff bristle brush to a sound edge, feathering with a fine grade abrasive paper and removing all dust.

Prior to painting, the moisture content should not exceed 18%.

Remove all visible signs of organic growth, using Zinsser Mould Killer & Remover to treat the affected areas in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

In areas with sound paint, wash and clean down with Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner to remove any contaminants and rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all residues, allowing it to dry before filling any cracks and small surface defects with a suitable filler, as appropriate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Allow the surface to dry and then rub down with a fine grade abrasive paper, removing all dust.

Step 2. Priming

Prime the prepared glossy surfaces with one full coat of Zinsser B-I-N in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, allowing a minimum drying time of 45 minutes in normal drying conditions before decorating.

Step 3. Decoration

Decorate surfaces with two full coats of Zinsser Perma-White Interior in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, allowing a minimum drying time of two hours between coats.

The paint is available in 3 finishes (matt, satin and semi-gloss) with a choice of over 4,000+ RAL, NCS and BS colours from RAL and BS shades.
