Designed for long-term decoration. This low-maintenance, water-shedding coating is ideal for use on various exterior surfaces including wood, uPVC, galvanising, steel, aluminium, cladding, stucco, brick, stone, and cured concrete. For all paintable exterior surfaces, it is ideal for low temperature applications where a water based coating may not be suitable.
Key Features
- Multi-surface application: Suitable for a wide range of exterior surfaces.
- Quick drying: Recoatable in just 3 hours, ensuring efficient project completion.
- Weather resistant: Excellent durability against the elements, maintaining a fresh appearance.
- Fungal protection: Contains a biocide to prevent fungal degradation of the dried coating.
- Temperature application: Can be applied at temperatures as low as 5°C.
- Long-lasting: Provides up to 15 years of protection before requiring maintenance.
Application Instructions
Ensure surfaces are clean, sound, and free of dirt, dust, grease, wax, or loose paint. Remove any existing mould and mildew using a fungicidal wash. Treat timber at risk of decay or insect attack with a suitable preservative. For hard or glossy surfaces, abrade and degrease before painting. Fill all nail holes and gouges before application.
Stir the paint well before using and apply in temperatures between 5°C and 32°C with less than 80% humidity. For airless spray, use a tip size of 0.13 - 0.017 at a pressure of 1800 – 2400 psi. Two coats are generally recommended, with an additional coat on high exposure areas like sills and fascia boards.
For Composite Surfaces; Always ensure that the surface has been prepared sufficiently, Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner is ideal for this. As composite surfaces tend to have a wax like finish we would also advise lightly abrading the surface area. Two coats are required, the first coat acts as the primer and the second seals and protects the system

Questions
Question about the product
Nick on 2024-10-15 16:18:11 | Question:
Is this paint suitable for an exterior table frame (not table top) made from Millboard composite decking boards? Also is a primer required? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the surface is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the techncial datasheet, this product could be used in this type of application. We'd recommend applying to a small test area firstly to check for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application. For increased adhesion, you could consider using the adhesive primer Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 as a first coat.
Ciarán McHugh on 2024-08-17 22:33:33 | Question:
Can this paint be sprayed? If so what is the DIN? Secondly, do you deliver to Northern Ireland? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product can be applied by airless spray, using a tip of 0.13 - 0.017 and pressure of 1800 - 2400 psi, with a recommended application of 2 coats, but 3 coats maybe required for high exposure areas such as sills and fascia boards. We can currently only offer delivery to Mainland UK at this current time, not Northern Ireland.
Jamie on 2024-08-13 15:48:52 | Question:
I’m looking to paint some table tops for a customer to be used in a cafe. They are varnished at the moment. Would All coat be suitable for this product or can you suggest another product |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, this product wouldn't be suitable to cope with the type of day in/day out exposure a café would bring, such as hot plates/drinks and cleaning chemicals used on the surface. As an alternative, assuming the tables are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, you could consider Kolorbond K2. We'd recommend applying to a small test area to begin, to check for compatibility and adhesion prior to fully coating each table. As this product is a paint, it could be cut through and abraded on the suface like most paints, but does leave a very hard finish once cured.
Jayne on 2024-07-25 11:13:08 | Question:
Could I use this paint for exterior glass panels? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, unfortunately this product isn't suitable for this type of application. Assuming the glass panels are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, you could consider Bradite One Can Matt or Bradite One Can Eggshell, with 2 -3 coats recommended to suitably prepared areas. Available in many RAL, BS or NCS Colours.
Nigel on 2024-05-25 17:54:05 | Question:
On an historic, coastal WW2 site, concrete walls with a cement render have just been graffitied with spray car paint (which has effectively sealed the surface). I want to hide the graffiti with a long-lasting (RAL colour-matched) paint. It's 16 square metres of graffiti, so I hope I don't need a primer too. Is Zinsster Allcoat Satin solvent-based a reasonable solution? Many thanks! |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the render was bare prior to the graffiti occuring, you could consider Hydron AG4 Graffiti Remover, which has been developed to remove graffiti from more porous surfaces. Assuming the wall isn't a retaining wall, you could then consider Hydron Nu-Guard AG, in either Clear or a Coloured Option. If graffiti occurs again, this can be easily removed with hot soapy water. Or as an alternative option, assuming the graffiti is removed, the render is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, you could choose to paint with Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin, but we would suggest Water-Based finish instead of the Solvent-Based option in current temperatures.
Paul McEvoy on 2023-09-11 09:48:15 | Question:
Hi. having done extensive research, I have decided to use Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Satin, (solvent-based), paint for our fibreglass garage door. Two questions, please : 1 Is a Primer required ? And if yes, what would you recommend ? 2 I require Anthracite RAL 7016 colour to match our windows / doors. Can I rely on this being exactly matched when I order your paint ? Regards, Paul |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes this product is suitable for application to a clean, dry, sound and prepared fibreglass garage door, but if temperatures for application and curing are over 10°C we would recommend to use the water based version. Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) This can be mixed to many RAL, NCS or BS colours including RAL 7016. There can be variances in colours on finished garage doors so we would recommend to order a Colour Sample Sachet to ascertain if this is a close enough match.
Lesley Woolley on 2023-04-08 10:02:11 | Question:
I am looking to paint my wooden gates. I have previously used Dulux Opaque (solvent based) on the gates. What product would you recommend to ensure it adheres to the Dulux Opaque? Thanks for your help |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Prior to application of this paint we would recommend that any loose of flaking paint is removed, any remaining paint is cleaned, is dry and sanded to provide a key. We would recommend to test on a small area for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application. If you have any bare timber areas these should be primed first with Zinsser Cover Stain.
Abz on 2023-02-23 00:27:04 | Question:
Hi would this paint work for wooden stairs? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately no, this product is not suitable to be walked on. Assuming the wooden stairs are previously painted, they are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Blackfriar Professional Acrylic Floor Paint. This is available in many RAL, NCS or BS colours in a semi-gloss finish. We would recommend to test on a small area prior to full application for compatibility and adhesion.
Neil Cooper on 2022-09-18 20:23:30 | Question:
Can you recommend a paint for the top of a wooden garden table please? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This paint could be used for this application, assuming the timber is bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet including being primed first with Zinsser Cover Stain. We would recommend 3 coats of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) be applied to areas subject to pooling water.
susan watling on 2022-08-24 17:13:20 | Question:
Is Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) suitable and compatible to paint over a metal container 20' x8'x8.5' that has been primed with Steel Seal by Akzonobel. This second coat will be of a garden scene ie. flowers , trees etc. It is in a community garden area. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would recommend you test for compatibility and adhesion on a small area prior to full application with the primer. Assuming this is successful, the primed steel is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet this could be used for the vertical areas of the container. For the roof areas we would recommend Rust-Oleum Mathys Fillcoat as this will be suitable for pooling water.
Steve Gilmore on 2022-05-15 23:26:36 | Question:
Hi Technical; Reference Zinsser AllCoat exterior Could you advise please is this paint suitable for painting fibreglass utility boxes, the sort you would typically find semi recessed into the wall of a new house? What if any prep would you recommend, i.e. do I need to key the surfaces with for example wire wool and finally do I need to apply some sort of primer to promote better adhesion. Thank you for technical and valued assistance. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the fibreglass box is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet this can be used. The area should be sanded and degreased prior to application and two coats are recommended.
Julia on 2022-03-25 09:18:42 | Question:
I want to paint our UPVc door door to match our new windows. How much of a sample do you need to be ableto colour match? I only have a very small piece of material left over , about 2cm x 1cm,. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately we cannot colour match a sample, we would recommend viewing a physical RAL, NCS or BS colour chart to find a suitable match. Assuming the UPVC doors are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend the Kolorbond uPVC Painting Kits for this application. This can be mixed to many RAL, NCS and BS colours in a satin finish.
Jerry on 2022-02-10 12:08:40 | Question:
I want to paint a corrugated fibre concrete garage roof which has never been painted before (approx 30 years old) but has been regularly treated against mould, etc. After cleaning, etc, which under coat and top coat products would you recommend? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the fibre concrete roof is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Eagle Bitumen Primer followed by Eagle DoubleCoat Pro-Reflect Liquid Waterproofing for the external face of the roof. This is available in an aluminium finish.
Mark on 2021-11-01 14:47:14 | Question:
Hello, We have two garage doors that need painting. We think they are made of a fibreglass type material. We would like to use Zinsser Allcoat exterior but should we use water or solvent based. We will be doing the work in November. Just want to make sure I’m using the right product before we buy. Many thanks Mark |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the garage doors are fibreglass or grp, they are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet Zinsser Allcoat Exterior can be used. With application taking place in november we would recommend the solvent based option, but the air and substrate temperature must be over 5°C during application and curing.
Mike Sharp on 2021-10-10 22:10:59 | Question:
My building has layers of lead paint and has then been painted with acrylic paint, with horrible results It has been suggested I use a zimsser paint to seal in the lead after sanding back the acrylic (with great care of course) What product would you suggest? Thank you |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would recommend testing for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application on any previously applied coatings. Any previously applied paints must be sound and prepared prior to application. We would suggest Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 can be used prior to application as a primer sealer, then Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Water Based as this will be less likely to react with previously applied paints.
Mrs dawson on 2021-10-04 09:53:03 | Question:
A tin. Of this paint has been knocked over on the artificial grass can you tell me how to remove it |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Drips or spills can be cleaned up when the paint is still wet with white spirits. If the paint has dried Zinsser Brush Cleaner & Restorer can be used on application equipment. We would recommend either checking with the manufacturer of the artifical grass if either of these will damage the grass or testing on a small area prior to full application.
Lisa on 2021-10-02 13:34:20 | Question:
Hi , I’m not sure what they are called, but have a 1930’s bay fronted house and in between the downstairs bay and the upstairs bay there are like felt flappy tiles . Would this product be suitable to to paint them ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Thank you for the enquiry, unfortunately we do not have a product to recommend for this application.
peter Petrou on 2021-09-08 02:10:15 | Question:
Hi I am looking to paint my front door , but i am not sure if my door is UPVC or Composite, for the paint to work well is there a difference or is there a paint that i can use for either, Also does one of the 2 need any primer or can i use the paint recommended without primer on either door, if there's a difference then ill try to find out what my door is. thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the door is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet, this paint is suitable for application to upvc or composite doors without a primer.
martin Campion on 2021-08-30 14:04:34 | Question:
i would like to paint our aluminium powder coated windows and hard wood frames. please could you advise most suitable primer and top coat for both surfaces. Was thinking of allcoat satin solvent base and a primer. Advice gratly appreciated. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the powder coating is polyester, it is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we would recommend Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 followed by Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Waterbased. For the timber, assuming it is bare, we would recommend priming first with Zinsser Cover Stain.
Kate on 2021-07-28 16:06:06 | Question:
Hi there, I am looking to paint our front wall. It appears to be a concrete with small stone aggregate. I was looking at: Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) or Wethertex AP77 Flexible Smooth Masonry Paint. Are these right for concrete walls? And will I need additional paints i.e. primers etc.? Thanks, Kate |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the wall is a bare cement based render, it is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet either of those products could be used. We would recommend priming first with Wethertex ST1 Quick Dry Stabilising Primer if you are using Wethertex AP77 Flexible Smooth Masonry Paint.
Danny McLaughlan on 2021-07-20 16:23:41 | Question:
I have Larch cladding at the exposed south facing rear of my property in central Scotland. This has been protected with Tikkurila Valti semi transparent wood finish but is weathering fast. I would like to refurbish with Zinsser All Coat Exterior satin paint. Should I use solvent or water base and what prep / priming do you advise ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the previously painted timber is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet Zinsser Allcoat could be used. Any bare areas of timber should be primed with Zinsser Cover Stain. We would recommend using the waterbased option and to test for compatibility and adhesion on previously applied paints.
Florence on 2021-07-09 07:34:04 | Question:
Can this be used on lead flashing ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the lead is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet this can be applied to lead after it is primed with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3.
Pat Bright on 2021-07-06 15:38:16 | Question:
Hi, I would like to paint a cane/bamboo set of furniture that I can leave out during the summer months, so it may be subject to some wet weather. Can you recommend a paint please and would I need to undercoat it. Many thanks Pat |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Thank you for the enquiry, unfortunately we do not have a product to recommend for this application.
Colin Peabody on 2021-07-03 10:40:21 | Question:
Hello, I would like to pain the inside of the UPVC window frames in our house. I see there are plenty of suitable products for exterior use, but which would be the best for interior application ? or is it simply a case of using one of the exterior products inside ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the upvc windows are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Waterbased for the internal and external frames.
David noble on 2021-06-14 18:56:29 | Question:
Hi would this be suitable for my outside sun canvas canopy thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, unfortunately we do not have a product to recommend for painting canvas.
elaine on 2021-05-12 12:19:54 | Question:
Hello, I want to paint some newly fabricated mild steel fence panels that will be placed in an exposed area in a city centre, after cleaning up the panels can i just use the one coat or would you recommend a primer too? i would like a surface that is as hard wearing as possible. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the mild steel panels are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data Sheet we can recommend Rust-Oleum 3369/3380 CombiPrimer Anti-Corrosion followed by two coats of Rust-Oleum CombiColor Original. This can be mixed to many RAL and BS colours in a satin or gloss finish.
Steph on 2021-03-09 15:28:34 | Question:
Would this be suitable for painting a garden pergola? I was recommended to use oil/solvent based paint but I'm struggling to find any and this is the only brand I've come across. Thank you |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the timber is bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data sheet this product would be suitable for that application apart from on the roof. We would recommend priming first with Zinsser Cover Stain.
Mark Jardine on 2021-02-04 22:52:50 | Question:
1) does the solvent based allcoat satin allow wood to breathe? ie will it allow water vapour to escape? 2) Have you any experience of customers using this finish on boats? I know that it is not suitable for an immersed surface, but what about regularly splashed bulwarks on a working boat? the paint would be getting applied in colder conditions so iassume the water based version is unsuitable from your information. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The paint is not breathable and would not allow water vapour to escape. This product is designed as a decorative paint and the environment you are looking to use it in would greatly reduce the longevity. For this application assuming the timber is bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data Sheet we would recommend Teamac High Performance 2 Pack Zinc Phosphate Primer followed by Teamac High Performance Polyurethane Topcoat. This is also not breathable.
Joanne on 2020-07-07 16:51:37 | Question:
Hi, what paint would you recommend for painting wooden decking/walkway? Solvent or water based? Thank you. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the timber decking is clean, dry and sound we can recommend Bradite Floor-it. This is available in many RAL and BS colours in a semi-gloss finish. Please check the Technical Data Sheet for substrate and priemr requirements.
Kevin Webb on 2020-04-20 09:16:21 | Question:
Hi is this ok for a garage door ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the door is previously coated and in sound condition then yes. Unless the ambient temperature during application is under 10°c we would usualy recommend the water based version, Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based).
west on 2020-02-12 15:01:50 | Question:
im looking to paint my upvc front door using your Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) do you do them in tester pots so I can choose a colour?? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We don't I'm afraid, this is available in RAL and BS colours which are a standardised colour range.
Janet on 2019-10-30 02:36:52 | Question:
Hello, I just need to ask your advice please.... I would like to paint my composite front door (it's presently black and I'd like to change it to a grey shade)... However it's a really cold time of year and due to this I'm uncertain if I should use the Allcoat Exterior Satin Solvent Based or Water Based paint? ... Could you please help? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) would be the recommendation for low temperature application. Apply when air and surface temperatures are above 5°C and humidity is less than 80%.
Lorraine Elliott-Morrow on 2019-10-07 16:06:28 | Question:
What's the best paint for white upvc windows? The windows are smooth, does it leave brush marks in the finish when dry? I'm looming to paint them either anthracite grey or a lighter grey. Thank oth |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) is our preferred choice for uPVC, for more details on painting uPVC you can read our blog post How to Paint uPVC Windows and Doors.
anthony frost on 2019-09-22 09:42:14 | Question:
Good morning, can you match a colour for me that's not on your chart. I am painting white upvc windows. Thank you. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, please post a sample of the colour you want matching to; Rawlins Paints, FAO Technical Team, Northspeed House, Moorview, Holbeck, Leeds, LS11 9NF. Alternatively if you know the colour code for the colour but it is not listed on our website for this product give us a call as we may already have a match.
Linda Hallifax on 2019-06-27 19:58:41 | Question:
What would you recommend for re-painting a fibreglass outdoor sculpture when the previous paint is flaking off? Some areas are bare fibreglass now |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) would be fine for the this. (There is a chance the solvents in the solvent based grade could attack the old paint coating). Rub down to remove the loose flaking paint back to a sound surface, wash thoroughly to remove all dirt etc. then apply 2 coats of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) in your chosen colour.
Adam on 2019-04-06 14:58:35 | Question:
Hi, hope you are having a good day. Would Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based), be the best product for a window sill which has plant pots which are occasionally moist/ damp , the water based paint keeps peeling in rings. Looking for the best waterproof, scratch resistant product? Many thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would recommend applying something more durable than a single pack for your application in way of Rust-O-Thane 9200 Handy Pack
Peter on 2019-03-29 06:35:00 | Question:
Hello, What paint product would work best on old wooden windows, subjected to harsh weathering ie. direct sun/directional rain? Some areas are back to bare wood, some of which is resinous. There are areas of existing sound paint to be overcoated. Many thanks. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Water Based or Solvent Based could be used here. After preparation, prime bare areas of timber with Zinsser Cover Stain. Existing paint should be sound and well adhered, remove anything loose and flaking, clean thoroughly and abrade to provide a key. Then apply 2-3 coats as required of either AllCoat Exterior product in the desired colour and finish.
Annabel on 2019-02-25 21:24:35 | Question:
I am repainting our porch, which is a mixture of timber and metal window frames (no door). Would you recommend the water based or solvent based Zinsser all coat exterior satin? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
If painting is to be done when temperatures are low, i.e. below 10°C then the solvent grade must be used. If it is warmer than 10°C then the water based version can be used. Note that the water based product is easier to apply and is Zinsser's preferred product so if you hold on until spring this would be the better option.
Russell on 2019-02-20 14:16:57 | Question:
Hi I want to paint our Composite front door Black Satin. I’ve chosen the All Coat Exterior Satin Solvent based. Would this be the correct paint. Something tells me no. Many thanks.. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Where possible we would instead recommend the use of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based).
John Ross on 2019-02-09 16:18:42 | Question:
Not sure if question already sent. Want to change 8 upvc interior windows + 1 french door in our conservatory from brown to satin white, would appreciate any advise, plan to spray. Regards JohnRoss |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
What you plan to do is fine but where possible we recommend using Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) instead due to better performance/application directly onto uPVC.
Mike Moran on 2019-01-17 21:33:05 | Question:
I want to date my UPVC white window frames, probably dark grey/black. Your helpful website suggests Zinisser Exterior wAter based,2 coats applied in summer.Correct ? if we did it with first coat gloss and then preferred sAtin, Could we just use satin for the second coat or would it still need 2 coats satin ? Would 3 coats last longer ? Some high windows and don’t want to re scaffold-prefer to ensure it lasts. Any good feedback for this paint on UPVC window frames please ? Thanks a lot. Mike |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would always suggest the water based grade of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior where possible for uPVC. If you use the gloss for the first coat and decide you prefer satin, the water based satin can be applied over the gloss. 2 coats will give a good level of performance on vertical surfaces, any horizontal surfaces could be given 3 coats to give the best level of performance.
Phil on 2018-12-15 15:29:50 | Question:
What system do you recommend for painting exterior timber window frames; currently painted with sound solvent-based gloss? I've read conflicting opinions on whether solvent or water based allcoat should be used, both requiring or not requiring 123 primer to ensure adhesion to the glass. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
If you have to do the job during winter then Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Solvent Based) must be used. If you can wait until warmer weather then Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) would be suitable (this would be the preferred option as the timber will be drier). When using the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) prime surfaces first with Zinsser Cover Stain to get adhesion to glass, this is the best primer in our range for glass. If using the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Solvent Based), do not prime with Zinsser Cover Stain, the solvent grade of AllCoat Exterior will adhere reasonably well to the glass on its own. Just make sure the timber is completely dry before painting.
Gaz on 2018-08-11 08:53:42 | Question:
Currently have a uPVC composite door in a deep red colour. We are looking to paint this grey, would zinsser allcoat product be suitable and if so would solvent version be recommended over water based version. Finally would I need to use a coat of bullseye 123 primer first or is the allcoat product self priming? Many thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would instead recommend the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) for this. It is self priming onto this type of surface, 2-3 coats in a grey colour should cover a dark red door.
Lesley Adshead on 2018-08-10 14:05:38 | Question:
Hi I am wanting to spruce up my aluminium framed greenhouse and want to find a suitable primer and paint in a grey shade to go with the rest of my newly refurbished garden colour scheme. Can you please advise me which product will be best to be used, as it all seems to be a little contradictory on different sites. Am I right in thinking after the frame work has been cleaned down - and dry to use an etch primer to ensure it adheres to the aluminium - then what paint would I need to use as a top coat ? Any help or advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Lesley Adshead. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would instead recommend the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) for this. It is easier to use than the solvent grade and gives the same level of performance. An etch primer is not required, the AllCoat will stick well on its own.

Neil Bould on 2018-06-28 14:35:12 | Question:
I want to a smooth Shiplap shed& upvc windows & doors dark grey? Slate grey what do I use?? And where are you based?? Leeds? If so I'm not too far away to collect Regards Neil |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
One of the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior products would be an excellent choice to paint both of these substrates but we would recommend one of the water based finishes in the summer months rather than the solvent based. We are based in Leeds and have a Trade Counter you can collect from at LS11 9NF.
Heather Pierpoint on 2018-04-09 09:53:01 | Question:
I need to paint exterior windows and doors that are currently painted in a hard finished stain/varnish. The wood is in excellent condition, as is the finish. Which products would you recommend? Do I need to prime with Coverstain first. I is subject to the elements because of the location of the property. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would recommend priming first with Zinsser Cover Stain, make sure the timber is dry especially sills which can pick up moisture if the existing coating has cracked (moisture level must be below 12%). One of the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) range would be our preference for the top coat as they are easier to work with and just as high level of performance.
Judy Conway on 2018-03-16 19:05:44 | Question:
Can this product be mixed to any colour I require? We have a wooden chalet right on the coast and it is subject to being battered by the wind and rain, salt and extreme sun. Will this product withstand these conditions? I am hoping to get the chalet repainted again due to the front cracking and fading. your product is solvent based is that the same as an oil based paint? My decorator does not think that a water based paint would withstand the conditions that are thrown at the chalet. I look forward to your feedback. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The Water Based Zinsser AllCoat Exterior range will give a better level of performance in this environment, it is more flexible than the solvent based product meaning it will move with the expansion and contraction of the timber without cracking. Provided the surface is thoroughly prepared and the timber is completely dry the product will give a very good level of performance in these conditions. Please note the Satin and Gloss Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) versions will have slightly higher performance than the matt for this situation, i.e. exterior timber, the matt is designed more for masonry surfaces. All products can be mixed to any RAL, BS and NCS colour by us and many more if you require a specific colour matching.
Leah on 2018-02-12 17:19:52 | Question:
I would like to paint a upvc front door with this. Would I need to do anything tp the door before usinv this paint. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would recommend you use the water based Zinsser AllCoat Exterior products for this application. AllCoat Exterior water based products can be applied directly to these items with no primer required. If any areas are new uPVC new we would advise abrading the surfaces with a fine grade of sandpaper followed by a solvent wipe using methylated spirits. Then apply 2 coats of the AllCoat Exterior water based when weather permits.
Gaz on 2018-01-16 18:37:26 | Question:
Was thinking of spraying this Can u add something to make it dry faster? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Application by spray should be done with airless spray, use tip 0.13 - 0.017 at pressure 1800 – 2400 psi. There is nothing you can add to speed up the drying, it is best to apply 2 thin coats as these will dry much quicker than a heavy coating. Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) is designed specifically for use in cooler conditions so it will dry OK even at lower temperatures. Note: You can only use liquid driers in solvent based alkyd paints, Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) is not an alkyd formula, therefore driers would not be compatible.

Would this be suitable for use on mdf wall panelling in the bathroom? The area does get wet occasionally. |

Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) wouldn't be suitable for this application. Instead we would recommend 1 coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 followed by 2 coats of Zinsser Perma-White Interior.
