Surface Preparation
- Ensure that the paving to be jointed is dry and free from loose dirt, oil, debris and grease etc
- It is essential the joint widths are a minimum of 2mm and maximum 5mm wide with a minimum depth of 25mm
- Do not prefill joints with sand. Sika® Setting Sand should be applied to the entire joint depth
Application Methods
- It is recommended to carry out a small trial in an inconspicuous area or on off-cuts of paving prior to application
- Due to the nature of Sika® Setting Sand, some settling of contents will occur. It is important to re-mix the dry material before use. Discard any small lumps and do not add extra sand to the dry material
- Use in small, manageable amounts and avoid spreading over a large area
- Sweep the material into the joints, making sure each joint is completely filled
- If rain is expected prior to hardening, the surface must be protected to ensure a smooth finish
- Sweep up any excess material immediately as it can be difficult to remove once set
- Thoroughly soak the joints with a hose pipe set to spray or a watering can fitted with a rose. Do not use a pressure washer
- Ensure joints are all fully saturated
- Rinse excess material from the surface
- The finished surface is safe to walk upon immediately after activation, but ideally should be left to dry
- Drying will normally take 1 – 2 days although the time required for full cure is dependent upon temperature
- At lower temperatures, the cure time will be slower
- It will take up to 28 days to achieve full cure
Limitations
- Do not use on joints smaller than 2mm wide. Joints that taper to a width less than 2mm could result in failure
- Joint depth must be a minimum of 25mm
- Read all instructions carefully before use
- Do not apply when rain is imminent or when temperature is 5°C or below
- The jointing should not be cleaned by use of high-pressure washers until cured for at least 28 days. The distance between nozzles and jointing must be at least 10cm
- Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. As the company cannot be aware of all the applications and materials the product may be used on, it is the user’s responsibility to determine suitability for use
- Ensure paved areas, beds and joints are well drained – ideally from beneath – to avoid standing water in joints over long periods

Questions
Question about the product
Paul on 2022-01-26 09:20:49 | Question:
What area will one bag cover? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Due to the application this product is used for the manufacturer does not list a coverage rate.
Andrew on 2020-03-19 09:45:29 | Question:
Hello Can this be used for a new project instead of kiln dried sand and be plate vibrated down rather than just jointing after. Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, unfortunately it would not be suitable for this proposed use.
Neil on 2020-02-23 11:57:29 | Question:
Hi will this burn or mark my patio slabs like cement or mortar will.? Is there a copy of instructions I can look at? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The Sika Setting Sand will not have the same issues that can occur when using a cement mortar. However if used incorrectly the product will leave a 'haze' over the patio surface. This occurs when product is left on the surface during the wetting process or if the product is applied to a damp surface. Product application instructions can be found in the Technical Data Sheet, in the Attachments tab on the product page.
