Teamac Metaclor Antifouling Primer
Teamac Metaclor Antifouling Primer is a high-performance, single-component primer formulated with chlorinated rubber for optimal durability and adhesion. This versatile primer is specifically designed to provide superior protection against corrosion and fouling on various substrates, including wood, metal, and GRP. Its unique formulation, which includes Zinc Phosphate, offers additional corrosion resistance, making it particularly effective when applied to steel surfaces.
Application & Uses
Metaclor Antifouling Primer is suitable for a wide range of marine and industrial applications. It is ideal for priming narrowboats, cruisers, barges, yachts, and various marine structures. The primer can be used as an underwater base coat on properly prepared steel or as a sealer coat over most conventional paint systems.
- Recommended for use on wood, metal, and GRP surfaces.
- Best applied over blast-cleaned or mechanically prepared steel to achieve maximum adhesion and longevity.
- Can be top-coated with Teamac Antifouling paints or as part of a comprehensive anti-corrosive system.
Application Instructions
For best results, ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from grease, oil, or other contaminants. Blast cleaning to SA 2½ is recommended for steel surfaces; however, mechanical cleaning can be employed if blast cleaning is not possible. Apply to a small test area first to check compatibility, especially over existing coatings.
- Mix well before use to ensure an even consistency.
- Apply by brush, roller, or airless spray, following recommended drying times between coats.
- Always allow a minimum of 8 hours between coats for optimal curing.
Limitations & Precautions
Metaclor Antifouling Primer should not be used on surfaces that have not been properly prepared, as this may affect adhesion and performance. Avoid applying in high humidity or low temperatures, as this can slow drying and curing times. Always follow safety guidelines, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and ensure adequate ventilation during application.
- Do not use on unprepared surfaces.
- Avoid application in conditions of high humidity or low temperature.
- Not suitable for use in confined spaces without adequate ventilation.
Complementary Products
For enhanced protection and performance, it is recommended to use Metaclor Antifouling Primer in conjunction with the following products:
- Teamac Antifouling D: Provides an effective topcoat that works synergistically with the primer to prevent fouling.
- Teamac Protector II: Offers additional protection against harsh marine environments, extending the life of the primer and topcoat system.
Health and Safety
Metaclor Antifouling Primer is classified as a hazardous material due to its flammability and potential health effects. It contains substances that may cause skin irritation, serious eye irritation, and respiratory irritation. It is toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Always handle with care, wear appropriate PPE, and avoid release into the environment.

Questions
Question about the product
Andy Knox on 2021-08-19 19:10:34 | Question:
We are presently renovating a 25year old swimming pool and need to repaint bases of steel supporting columns which are poolside and are in contact with chlorinated water. Can you recommend a suitable paint system. Grit blasting the column bases is not practical and the surface rust will need to removed by hand. Should a rust convertor be part of the paint system. Your advise would be appreciated. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the steel columns are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet this primer could be used. Then two coats of Teamac Chlorvar Chlorinated Rubber Paint applied. Preparation of steel by blasting to SA2.5 or mechanical means is required. Teamac Rust Converter could be used.
David Williams on 2019-11-04 21:10:30 | Question:
I'm repainting a grp canal cruiser during November and December out in the open in the UK. Can I use this primer and the anti fouling paint in temperatures down to freezing? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, the temperature needs to be about 5-10 degrees, you will get moisture entrapment if you try and paint it in those conditions.
David on 2019-10-09 15:29:10 | Question:
Hi, I'm looking for a suitable primer for a small dinghy I am building from plywood. Parts will be bare plywood and parts will be epoxy glassed. The boat will live most of its life indoors, three days in water at a time max. Does the Metaclor level out when brushed on? Also can you recommend a topcoat. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would instead recommend 2 coats of Teamac P101 High Performance Finish are applied directly to the plywood for this application.
William Elliot on 2019-09-16 18:19:56 | Question:
I have a series of metal sumps which will be immersed in water for around 10 weeks only. The sumps have a basic metal primer applied to prevent when dry and exposed to the air. Can you recommend a product to apply over the primer to give a waterproof seal only. The sumps will not be seen and so the finish does not have to be perfect, but they do need to be waterproofed to ensure nor rust develops. I hope you can recommend a product. (Something off the shelf that I can get quickly). Thanks in advance. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Teamac Metaclor Underwater CR Primer followed by 2 coats of Teamac Chlorvar Chlorinated Rubber Paint would be suitable for this application as long as the existing primer is compatible with these products. You can either send our Technical Team the data sheet for the primer used so they can make an assesment or you can carry out a test area with the above products before full application to ascertain compatibility.
David Howie on 2019-07-23 17:08:35 | Question:
Hi, I'm painting shipping container roofs with Chlorinated Rubber Paint, which will be the original paint used on most of them. The roofs are rusty, which will be prepared with wire brush. Would this be suitable primer prior to topcoat of Chlorinated Rubber? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
If corrosion protection is the key factor here we would suggest you may be better considering Bradite CR Anti-Corrosive Primer in this instance.
Robert Lyall on 2019-05-16 14:16:37 | Question:
Can I use a rust converter on the steel before priming with Metaclor Underwater Primer? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, Teamac Rust Converter can be applied before application of Teamac Metaclor Underwater CR Primer.
john harwood on 2019-01-23 19:52:19 | Question:
I have a bare steel haul out rail trolley for small boats. made from 100mm x 50mm channell.this will be submerged for each tide and then exposed to air. Please recommend suitable base and topcoat colour is not a critical. 15 Mtrs Linear run of steel. Number of coats to give good protection ? Thank You Supplier in Poole Dorset Area |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Our suggestion for this would be to prepare the steel and then apply 2 - 3 good coats of Jotun Jotamastic 87 directly to the surface. A surface tolerant, high build primer, mid coat and finish coat product providing long lasting protection in atmospheric and immersed environments. Can also be applied at sub zero surface temperatures.

I have an old galvanised metal tin bath which i want to put plants and a couple of goldfish in. Will this product seal the bath and will it be fish safe. Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would recommend thorough cleaning down with Scotch Brite pads to remove all loose and flaking materials, contamination, dirt, grease, etc. and then prime with 1 coat of Teamac 2 Pack Zinc Phosphate Primer followed by 2 coats of Teamac P101 2 Pack Polyurethane Topcoat.
