Perfect for both residential and commercial applications, this product offers a cost-effective solution to maintain and enhance the aesthetic appeal of your asphalt surfaces without the need for extensive and disruptive re-surfacing.

Questions
Question about the product
Derek on 2024-05-21 04:05:46 | Question:
Hi can I paint red tarmac with black paint what would you recommend |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product could be applied over the existing red coloured tarmac, however may struggle to cover the colour fully and could require more than 2 coats to achieve this. As an alternative, assuming the substrate is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, Rust-Oleum Tarmacoat could be an alternative option. This product provides a higher film build and give a better option to hide any red colour.
Shea Hughes on 2020-07-20 19:16:33 | Question:
Hi, my tarmacadam driveway is 10 years down now and looking very grey. Which of your two products is best to bring it back looking fresh again. I notice there is a big price difference between the two products so what is the difference Tarma coat and Asphalt restorer? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Rust-Oleum 5478 Asphalt Restorer is a bitumen based product containing filler to revive the orginal tarmac. Rust-Oleum Tarmacoat is a waterbased acrylic paint that is available in a larger selection of colours.
Matthew on 2020-04-27 22:09:45 | Question:
Hi would this go soft when the weather is hot? I have heard of similar products doing this . Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Asphalt can soften with increases in temperature. Rust-Oleum 5478 Asphalt Restorer is intended as a surface coating. Depending on the substrate it could soften surfaces which contain coal tar. We would recommend to apply a test area and check after 24 hours that no softening has occurred.
neil on 2019-09-07 00:20:26 | Question:
can brushies be cleaned out with water? is it self leveling?,and when u say matt does it have just a very slight sheen ? thx |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Rust-Oleum 5478 Asphalt Restorer is a solvent based coating so brushes cannot be cleaned with water. It contains fillers and special flow additives, the product should be applied generously but evenly in one coat using a roller or brush. Small pits and fissures can be filled with a stiff mortar consisting of dry sand mixed with the product. Pits and fissures should be primed with the product before trowelling in the mortar. The product is classed as a matt finish.
matt dunn on 2019-07-16 12:20:33 | Question:
Will this product leave the tarmac slippery when wet |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
It has no specific anti-slip properties or test data on this but it is a matt finish and if applied properly shouldn't increase the risk of slipping on the surface.
andrew finch -dent on 2019-03-17 16:13:24 | Question:
can i paint this over freshly layed cold lay tarmac or do i have to wait for it to cure? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The newly laid tarmac would need to cure first.
Alan Harding on 2018-09-18 14:20:30 | Question:
Approximately what area will a 5l tin cover? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
5 - 10m² per 5 litre, depending on the surface.
Gwyn Matthews on 2018-08-16 05:38:57 | Question:
Hi My messy builders have left ivory tyrolean on the tarmac pavement Will this product paint over and disguise this? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, we think this should be OK. First be sure to thoroughly wash and clean the area (preferably by pressure washer) to remove as much of the staining as possible. Then ensure any remnants are completely dry and cured and unable to be removed. Test a small area first to ensure no adverse reactions, if OK apply 1-2 coats as required.
jvjones on 2018-07-22 10:42:43 | Question:
can this product be used on concrete |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, but Rust-Oleum Tarmacoat can.
Dave parkes on 2017-05-28 10:07:10 | Question:
I'm trying to get rid of diesel spillage stains from my drive due to a fuel tank breakage would your ash felt restorer do this job? Thanks for your help. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Contamination such as fuel spillages, oils, greases, etc. must be completely removed from surfaces needing to be painted with Rust-Oleum 5478 Asphalt Restorer. If this can be achieved then it should hide any visible discolouration, marks etc. left on the driveway surface to provide a uniform, solid coloured finish. We would however recommend a test area be carried out over the affected areas to ensure full obliteration can be achieved and no reaction occurs with the areas in question due to insufficient cleaning.
