Surface Preparation
Unpainted Surfaces:
- New concrete surfaces must be dry and hardened before treatment
- It is recommended that concrete surfaces be allowed to dry for a minimum of one heating period before painting
- The new plastering surface must be dry and hardened before painting
- The time needed for drying and hardening is affected by, for example, the texture of the plaster (e.g. lime-cement ratio), the drying and hardening conditions and the thickness of the plaster layer
- Remove dirt, dust, and salts from unpainted surfaces
- If the formation of salts is strong and continuous, do not treat the surfaces before the reason for the formation of salts is found
- Clean mouldy, mossy etc. surfaces by applying Tikkurila Mould Removal from the bottom upwards as instructed
- Concrete surfaces cast by using formwork must be mechanically worked, e.g. sand-blasted, to create sufficient surface texture
- Remove the glass-like, glossy laitance by, for instance, sandblasting, using a special grinding stone or high-pressure washing with the help of sand
Previously Painted Surfaces:
- Remove dirt, dust, and salts from surfaces
- If salts occur in the substrate, do not treat the surfaces before the reason for the formation of salts is found
- Clean mouldy, mossy etc. surfaces by applying Tikkurila Mould Removal from the bottom upwards as instructed
- Remove any flaky, loose, or powdery paint layers from the previously painted surface
- Choose the removal method according to the strength of the substrate and the type of paint to be removed (e.g. with steel wire brush, by pressure washing with hot water or water-sand washing)
- Also, remove powdery and weak areas from the plaster or concrete surfaces
- Open cracks found near concrete bars by chipping or by using an angle grinder and a blade etc
- Remove rust from the steel and treat with Finnseco repair mortars
- In the treatment of the substrate that contains asbestos, refer to the national guidelines or local regulations. (In Finland: Government Decision 1380/1994 and related Council of State statutes 318/2006 and 863/2010.)
Application Methods
Application Method:
- Recommended method: apply with a low-pressure spray ("Backpack garden sprayer")
- Can also be applied by brush or roller
Priming:
- Mix the primer carefully before use
- Spread Hydrosol Primer un-thinned or for Siporex surfaces thinned with water (max.1:1) The amount of primer is enough when Hydrosol Primer has absorbed into the substrate’s pores and does not leave a glossy, varnish like, film on the surface
- Primed surface can be treated the following day
Cleaning of Tools:
- Clean tools with water or with Tikkurila Pensselipesu (Tool Cleaner).
Application Conditions
- The temperature of the air, surface and primer should be at least +5°C, and the relative humidity of the air below 80% during priming work and drying
- Do not spread Hydrosol Primer on a wet or non-absorbing surface
Health and Safety
- Empty cans should be recycled or disposed of in accordance with local regulations
- Liquid waste should be destroyed according to the local regulations
- Refer to the product data sheet and safety data sheet in the attachments section above for further details
