- Interior applications
- General industrial exposures
Usage Instructions
To ensure optimal results, follow these instructions:
- Clean the surface thoroughly, removing grease, oil, and other contaminants.
- Remove loose rust and mill scale by scraping and wire brushing.
- Sand intact coatings to roughen the surface slightly.
- Stir the primer thoroughly before use.
- Apply at temperatures between 5°C and 35°C with relative humidity below 85%.
- For brush application, thin with up to 10% Rust-Oleum Thinner 7301. Use natural bristle brushes for best results.
- For roller application, use medium nap rollers and thin with up to 10% Rust-Oleum Thinner 7301.
- For air-atomised spray, thin with 10-20% Rust-Oleum Thinner 7301.
Restrictions and Limitations
Do not apply CombiPrimer in conditions of high humidity (above 85%) or at temperatures below 5°C. Avoid using on surfaces that are not clean or dry. Do not apply thick coats that exceed the recommended dry film thickness, as this may affect the drying process and adhesion.
Recommended Products
For the best results, follow up with CombiColor Original for a topcoat. This combination provides a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish.

Questions
Question about the product
Cameron Irving on 2024-10-09 11:00:37 | Question:
I have just re-roofed my car port with Plastisol coated sheet steel. I am keen to avoid the cut edge corrosion which plagued the previous roof sheets especially at the gutter edge. Can you please advise which product would be best to paint onto the cut edges to inhibit corrosion in the future? Many thanks, Cameron Irving |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
For application to new plastisol surfaces, we would usually advise leaving them to weather for at least a year (if not longer), before painting. Therefore, you could consider applying Rust-Oleum Noxyde Plus or Noxyde Peganox, as these products tend to provide better protection from cut-edge corrosion, however there is the likelihood of some delamination occuring of any applied coating. Waiting at least 12-18 months for the plastisol to have weathered will give a better base for these products to perform and protect from cut-edge corrosion far better.
Thomas Ennels on 2024-09-30 18:08:16 | Question:
Does this work on fibreglass? Also what colour is best to pick from out of the grey and red if I am painting light blue on top? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, this primer is only recommended for application to steel surfaces. Assuming the fibreglass is clean, dry, sound, lightly abraded and prepared as detailed in the techncial datasheet, and isn't for application to a fibreglass roof, you could consider Rust-Oleum CombiColor Multi-Surface. Available in your choice of 4400+ RAL, BS & NCS Colours. We'd recommend applying to a small test area to check for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application.
Darren on 2024-03-13 22:42:51 | Question:
Can combiprimer be used on clean new aluminium surfaces? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, but Rust-Oleum 3302 CombiPrimer Adhesion Primer can be used to prime bare, clean, dry aluminium.
Jerome Perkins on 2023-05-07 14:14:16 | Question:
I'm intending to paint my VW T3 using Combicolor paint. However I need to do some bodywork repairs first. What is the best way of protecting the areas I've worked on before I do the whole vehicle? They are small areas so using a roller would be wasteful. Use a brush and then sand it down prior to the final coats? I intend to use the method outlined on the Club 80-90 website for the final coats. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
If the vehicle is not being left inside till it is painted fully, we would recommend any area repaired is primed and painted with Rust-Oleum 3369/3380 CombiPrimer Anti-Corrosion followed by Rust-Oleum CombiColor Original. Then these areas can be prepared along with the other painted areas when a full repaint is undertaken.
Sue on 2019-06-18 13:56:22 | Question:
What is the coverage of CombiPrimer Anticorrosion? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
12.8m² per litre at 35 µm dry.
Sam on 2018-06-04 15:16:28 | Question:
I'm painting a narrowboat at the moment using CombiColor. How long would you recommend I leave the undercoat before applying masking tape? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
7 days at 20°C/50% r.h. | |
Roland Trickett on 2018-01-29 14:42:35 | Question:
We have 2 steel pillars that have been painted in the past with unknown paint. The idea was to strip down to metal and apply Rustolene. Can you give me name of a stripper and paint to apply from your stock. Pillars are about 27inches in circumference and 90 inches tall. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Rust-Oleum Nr.1 Green Paint Stripper would be our suggestion for removing the existing paint, but if the requirement is to just 're-paint' then providing the existing paint is a normal (i.e. not fire retardant, etc.) and well adhered, then it could be just prepared by cleaning and abrading to provide a key and then over painted with something like Rust-Oleum CombiColor, this would negate the need to strip.
MR Adams on 2018-01-03 16:26:39 | Question:
Can Combicolour be used for steel beams exposed to the outside. and if so ..how long will the coating last? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Rust-Oleum CombiColor is definitely OK to be used externally on steel, however the exact exposure conditions and degree of surface cleanliness (and profile) at the point of application will be the two biggest factors affecting the overall life expectancy of the coating. Assuming preparation is carried out in accordance with the manufacturers data sheets and one coat of Rust-Oleum 3369/3380 CombiPrimer Anti-Corrosion is applied followed by two coats of Rust-Oleum CombiColor we would expect to see a life expectancy of 3-5 years.
Mr moore on 2016-02-16 16:58:23 | Question:
Can Rust-Oleum 3369/3380 CombiPrimer Anti-Corrosion be used outside if overcoated with combicolour gloss? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, Rust-Oleum CombiPrimer can be used on interior and exterior projects and must be overcoated with Rust-Oleum CombiColor to complete the system.
