Remove loose or peeling paint and sand the edges of any remaining paint film until smooth. For new or unpainted surfaces, especially concrete or masonry, ensure they are cured for at least 30 days before priming. Remove all existing mould and mildew with an appropriate cleaner.
Shake or stir the paint well before use. Apply with a synthetic bristle brush, roller, or sprayer. For airless spraying, use a .017” tip and high-medium pressure (2000-2500 PSI). Maintain a “wet edge” to avoid lapping and avoid painting in direct sunlight or adverse weather conditions. The paint dries to touch in 1 hour and achieves full cure in 7 days.
Usage Limitations
- Not intended for application to exterior floors, decks, or any surfaces subject to water immersion or prolonged contact with water.
- Special precautions should be taken during the surface preparation of pre-1960 paint surfaces as they may contain harmful lead.

Chris on 2024-10-27 10:53:29 | Question:
Can I use RAL8016 on a fibre glass garage door ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the door is clean, dry, sound, lightly abraded and prepared as detailed in the techncial datasheet, this product can be applied directly to fibreglass doors as a recommended 2 coat application. For increased adhesion and protection, you could prime first with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 prior to application.
Gemma on 2024-09-04 13:59:40 | Question:
I intend on using this on my front door, I want to use RAL 020 20 29 - Burgundy. What, if any undercoat should I use? It's going on existing red gloss, it's peeling in places, so those bits need sanding. It doesn't get much rain but it is subject to sun. Regards Gemma |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming application is to a timber door, the door is clean, dry, sound, lightly abraded and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, you could consider a first coat of Zinsser Cover Stain to any bare areas of timber, before 2 full coats of Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Satin Water-Based to finish. We'd recommend applying to a small test area to begin, to check for compatibility and adhesion with the existing coating prior to full application.
Laura Fance on 2024-08-19 10:51:55 | Question:
Hi, Would this exterior paint be suitable to paint a shipping container? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the shipping container is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical, this product can be used. However, priming with Rust-Oleum 3369/3380 CombiPrimer Anti-Corrosion would be recommended, this will provide increased protection against Anti-Corrosion, before finishing with 2 full coats of Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Satin in your choice of many RAL, BS & NCS Colours. For greater protection, you could also consider Rust-Oleum 7500 Alkythane as an alternative.
Emma on 2024-08-17 18:57:12 | Question:
I used the water based allocation exterior satin for an external door but I think it gets too much rain on it. So this year I wamt to do a few coats and then a top coat of some left over oil based exterior gloss. My question is will thr oil based gloss stick to the water based zinsser all coat exterior satin |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Satin Water-Based is fully cured, it is lightly abraded, it is clean, dry, sound, this product can be over-painted. We would recommmend to test on a small area for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application.
Kerry on 2024-08-04 09:23:21 | Question:
We have an outdoor kitchen coated in silicone render. Would this be suitable to paint over the silicone render? Or can you suggest a paint that will? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the silicone render (K Rend) is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, this product in either a Satin or Matt Water-Based finish could be an option. 2 full coats are recommended, in your choice of many mixed colours.
Andrew Goodwin on 2024-07-22 21:23:21 | Question:
Can this be used on fibreglass outdoors? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the fibreglass substrate is clean, dry, sound, lightly abraded and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, providing there is a vertical water run-off and the product isn't being applied to a roof, this should be fine for application. 2 coats are recommended to achieve the desired outcome, with a choice of 4400+ RAL, BS & NCS Colours available. To ensure the surface is prepared sufficiently, you could consider Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner to remove all traces of oils, grease, and surface contaminants to provide a clean substrate prior to painting.
Julia ormondroyd on 2024-06-22 15:55:54 | Question:
Will this paint be ok to paint my kitchen tiles? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming application is for kitchen glazed wall tiles, that are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, we'd recommend a first coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 to prime the tiles, providing improved adhesion to the tiles. To finish, two full coats of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin Water-Based, in your choice of many RAL, BS & NCS Colours, can then be applied to provide a decorative topcoat finish. In preparation, Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner should be applied to the tiles, ensuring they are thoroughly clean and free of all oils, grease and surface contaminants prior to painting.
Kevin hardy on 2024-06-10 18:45:06 | Question:
Hi I have a rock composite front door in black and like to paint it light colour, which paint woul you recommend from your products? Thanks in advance. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the composite door is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Water-Based, in your choice of Satin, Matt or Gloss finish, will be fine for application. It is recommended to apply 2 full coats to achieve the intended finish, and can be mixed to many RAL, BS or NCS Colours.
Susan on 2024-05-31 10:42:40 | Question:

Matt on 2024-04-24 16:13:50 | Question:
Can the same tub of paint be used to paint a concrete garage and corrugated steel? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the concrete is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical, is porous and isn't being applied to a floor, Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water-Based) will be fine for application to the concrete. With regards to the corrugated steel, please e-mail [email protected] with further application requirements on the type of corrugated steel.
Sadie Holland on 2024-04-23 07:03:00 | Question:
I have some new putty on glazing bars which has now cured for a month. Can I just use Allcoat exterior? Or do I need to prime first? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the putty is clean, dry, sound and free from any surface contaminants prior to application, we'd recommend a first coat of Zinsser Cover Stain to prime, seal and stain block the putty, before 2 full coats of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior in your choice of RAL, BS or NCS Colours as a decorative finish.
Oli on 2024-04-14 16:03:43 | Question:
I have a new timber door that has been primed and undercoated with two coats of Dulux Weathershield. I have done one coat of solvent-based Dulux Trade high gloss as I had some leftover from a previous project, but realised I want to have a matt finish. Can you give any recommendations for what I should do to go over the existing surface with this paint? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Thank you for your enquiry, we have replied directly to your e-mail sent into the technical sales inbox for this enquiry.
Jane Howard on 2024-04-09 07:59:55 | Question:
Hi I need to paint my steel railings along front of my house , they are painted with a good quality metal paint but in places have started to flake which I assume is previous application error . Should I apply primer before using this paint and what would you suggest please . Do I need to sand the railings completely or just the areas that have gone flaky ? Thank you in advance |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the steel railings are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, any loose and flaking material is removed, bare metal areas are spot primed with Rust-Oleum 3369/3380 CombiPrimer Anti-Corrosion, this product could be used. All areas of the railings to be paint must be cleaned and sanded prior to application.
Stephen Burges on 2024-02-12 22:49:06 | Question:
Hi I need to paint a plastic coated metal garage door . The door is in good condition , about 5 years old would this be suitable & would I need a primer. Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the garage door is polyester powdercoated, it is bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet this product can be applied. We would recommend to test on a small area for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application.
ian on 2024-01-07 13:09:40 | Question:
Hi, would you recommend this paint as a chip resistant, wipe clean paint for solid wood (not laminated) kitchen cabinets please? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the solid wood cabinets contain no wood oils/wax previously coated into the timber, and prepared and abraded as detailed in the technical datasheet, we'd recommend Priming firstly with a coat of Zinsser Cover Stain, which will seal the timber, before 2 full coats of Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Satin mixed to your choice of 4400+ RAL, BS or NCS Colours.
Catherine af Uhr on 2023-10-13 15:59:29 | Question:
Hi I want to paint a small strip of marble next to a wood burner in the ALLCOAT exterior . The distance from the outside of the wood burner to the marble is 14cm min. Will it be OK to use. Happy to try it if only risk is it peels off but not sure if flammable etc |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately we would not recommend this product for this application. But assuming the marble is not exposed to foot traffic, direct flame contact or temperatures over 60°C, it is internal, bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet you could consider the option below: One coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 followed by two coats of Zinsser Perma-White Interior. This can be mixed to many RAL, NCS or BS colours in a matt or satin finish.
Neel parma on 2023-09-28 18:04:19 | Question:
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin Can this be used to paint indoor kitchen tiles? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming these are bare ceramic wall tiles, that are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet, you could use Zinsser Perma White Interior. The tiles should be cleaned with Zinsser Mould Killer Remover. We'd then recommend applying one coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 to increase adhesion on the tiles, followed by 2 coats of Zinsser Perma-White Interior in your choice of Satin or Matt finish, this can be mixed to many RAL, BS or NCS Colours. This would not be suitable for areas subject to direct water contact or elevated temperatures.

Sarah on 2022-07-24 18:20:39 | Question:
Do you have sample cards to show the colour & finish, as I've looked on the website & have narrowed down colours for uPVC window frame next to metal faced front door & portico columns. I'm looking to use Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (water based) in a 'teal' colour & cream / grey for columns. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately the manufacturer does not produce sample cards as these paints are mixed toindustry standard RAL, NCS or BS colours. We would recommend viewing these in physical colour charts in person, not choosing a colour from a screen. These can be found at local trade paint suppliers, our trade counter in Leeds.
tim phillips on 2022-07-15 16:03:47 | Question:
do you mix the zinsser paint on a zinsser approved mixer and colours |

Can I use this for indoor vinyl cupboards? Would I need to prime? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

There’s no need to prime but we recommend giving the surface a good clean down using hot soapy water, rinsing with warm water then wiping over with Methylated Spirit.

I’ve seen this being used to paint a kitchen work tops is this true as I want to change the colour of mine |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, unfortunately we cannot recommend this product for kitchen worktops. Assuming the kitchen worktops are a laminate, they are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Rust-Oleum Worktop Transformation Kit. This is available in galaxy black or diamond white.
Neil Cooper on 2022-04-25 22:26:15 | Question:

This paint is available in a matt, satin or gloss finish, if you are concerned about glare we would suggest either matt or a satin finish. If the timber is bare we would recommend application of Zinsser Cover Stain to the prepared area prior to application.
Graeme Taylor on 2022-04-01 13:34:38 | Question:
Would this product cover (and hide) rust stains on exterior UPVC (rust has appeared on UPVC from decking rails/support legs). I do not plan to use the product on the decking itself, just the railings and support legs which have rust stains/streaks on them. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would suggest cleaning with Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner and then priming with 2 coats of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus. Then you could apply Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) in the colour of your choice.

This can be mixed to many RAL, BS or NCS colours in a matt or satin finish.

Debbie on 2021-11-18 10:33:24 | Question:
Hello There, I wanted to re paint our wooden fascia of our house woith Zinsser All Coat. Although we live in the South and the weather remains mild for this time of year, will it dry adequately so the finish is not impaired by moisture in the evenings? Your advice is appreciated. Debbie |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
For application this time of year with temperatures below 10°C we would recommend the Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Satin Solvent Based. Assuming the wooden fascias are bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we would recommend priming first with Zinsser Cover Stain.
Simmi on 2021-11-17 14:07:59 | Question:
Hello, would 1lr of paint be enough for my uPVC front door front and back? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Chris R on 2021-08-26 12:14:12 | Question:
Hi, I have a shiplap shed that has been treated 6 months ago with Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment. The instructions from Barrettine state: "Should be capable of being overcoated with solvent based products within days, however it will require a weathering period of approximately 3 months before water based product can be over applied." I tried Protek Royal water based recently and the adhesion and finish was poor. I'd prefer water based and Zissner AllCoat is well reviewed but should I use the solvent based version please? Or would the water based perform better then Protek Royal in this case? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
On bare timber we would recommend the timber be primed initially with Zinsser Cover Stain prior to application of Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Satin Water Based.
David on 2021-08-11 15:50:22 | Question:
Can this be painted on the underside of a glass table for outdoors usage or would I need to Prime the glass first. Also if I just got the Bulls eye 1.2.3 primer in the colour I needed could I just use the primer on its own without having to buy both primer and top coat. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Please be aware when painting glass brush strokes will be visible through the glass. Assuming the glass is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet, the glass should be primed first with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 prior to application. We would recommend using a primer and topcoat assuming visible brush strokes are acceptable.
Gary Waring on 2021-08-10 14:03:01 | Question:
Can I use Zinsser All Coat Exterior on a new pressure-treated wooden fence? Thanks, Gary |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Andy on 2021-08-09 12:15:31 | Question:
Is Allcoat exterior satin suitable for painting twin wall polycarbonate sheets to prevent light ingress. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming you are looking to paint the internal faces of the polycarbonate we would recommend testing for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application as Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Water based will not adhere to all types of polycarbonate. It should be degreased with Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet. If you are looking to paint the external face of the polycarbonate, it is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Britannia Aquashield Eco. Please be aware that brush strokes will be visible through the panels.

Hi Do you do printed colour chart Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The manufacturer does not produce colour charts for this product. It can be mixed to many RAL and BS colours in a matt, satin or gloss finish.
Daniel parry on 2020-06-15 23:44:46 | Question:
Hi can this be applied to old upvc windows and doors with a Graco 9.5 hvlp sprayer and if so does it need to be diluted Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the aged UPVC is clean, dry and abraded prior to application we can recommend Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Waterbased. This can be applied by brush roller or airless spray only. This can be thinned if absolutely necessary (10% max with water). Usually it would need to be thinned more in order for it to pass through a HVLP, which is why we do not recommend it.
Dave Jones on 2020-06-04 07:27:48 | Question:
Hi, I would like to paint a garage door (steel) that has been previously painted with exterior gloss paint many years ago. Firstly, I would like to know if I need to use a primer in addition to rubbing down and cleaning with methylated spirits. Secondly our front door is Chartwell Green do you have a nearest colour match recommendation For that please. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the previously painted steel door is clean, dry and abraded Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Waterbased can be applied directly. If any areas are back to bare steel we can recommend priming with Bulls Eye 1-2-3. Zinsser Allcoat is available in many RAL and BS colours, please see the colour chart on the product page so you can find an appropriate match.
Mellissa on 2020-05-29 08:47:47 | Question:
I'm using All Coat Exterior Satin (water based) on a previously gloss painted front door (blue) and a steel garage door (white). I want to prime the front door with a white undercoat, to ensure colour consistency with the garage. Do I need to use a water based primer? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the door is clean, dry and sound we can recommend the use of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3, this is a compatible water based primer.
Michelle on 2020-05-25 21:50:32 | Question:
I have scraped off all old paint from a 40 year old galvanized garage door. After cleaning can I apply this paint straight on or do I need a primer? Many thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) can go directly onto degreased galvanised steel with no primer coat required.
Mike on 2020-05-25 09:24:36 | Question:
I would like to repaint my metal garage door which has a powder coated finish, from white to grey. I've read your advice to abrade, use Bulls eye 123 primer and I will use All Coat Exterior satin. Would I be better to use the Solvent or Water based option? (The door is well exposed to the sun) |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the door is dry, sound and prepared as you stated above we can recommend the waterbased option for this application at this time of year. At temperatures down to approximately 5°C we recomend the solvent based option.
mark on 2020-05-17 11:57:03 | Question:
I would like to respray our naff brown upvc windows and door. I assume spraying would give a better finish and have looked to get an electric paint sprayer. I wondered if this will need diluting and if so, by how much and using what? White spirit or water? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the UPVC is aged, clean, dry and sound this product would be perfect for this application. This paint does not require thinning for use with an airless sprayer and can also be applied with a brush or roller.
Katie on 2020-05-13 21:08:09 | Question:
Hi, can this paint be used to paint a composite door? Thanks. |

Alan Fielding on 2020-02-04 15:57:52 | Question:
Hi, Would Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) be suitable for use on an up and over steel garage door 12’ wide and subject to full hot sunlight in the afternoon causing expansion? Is this an acrylic-laytex paint? Regards Alan |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Providing you are looking to apply the AllCoat Exterior Satin Water Based to galvanised steel, then two coats may be applied by brush or roller at a coverage rate of approximately 10m2/litre/coat directly onto the bare surface. If this is ferrous steel, then a red oxide or zinc phosphate primer will need to be applied prior to using the AllCoat Exterior Satin. The paint should be applied when the air and substrate temperature is 10°C and rising, relative humidity less than 80%. Ensure there is no risk or rain, fog, frost or condensation from affecting the applied paint before it has had a chance to fully cure.
Ken Marshall on 2019-12-29 17:36:01 | Question:

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Sain (Water Based) can be applied directly to weathered uPVC once it is clean and dry. You can give the uPVC a light abrasion if you wish but it is not usually required.
Fabio on 2019-11-12 12:37:10 | Question:

Joe on 2019-08-20 02:11:20 | Question:
Can I use this to paint over exterior wooden cladding which has previously been painted with dark brown sadolin . Would this need a light base coat /undercoat as I am going to paint a white front door next to the cladding with the same anthracite paint. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) could be used for this, if you require a primer/undercoat we would suggest Zinsser Cover Stain.
Martin on 2019-07-10 20:27:41 | Question:
Can i use this product to paint and recolour my white uPVC windows |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, exterior surfaces which have been weathered can be washed down using warm water and dilute detergent followed by rinsing off with clean water and then 2 coats AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based).

Hi, can this be used on external floor tiles (threshold to a doorway)? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No. If you contact our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2) or [email protected] they should be able to advise a suitable alternative after asking some further details on your tiles and requirements.
David on 2019-07-04 05:11:57 | Question:
Hello, I've just bought zinnser all coat satin in anthracite to paint garage door and uPVC front door. Original plan was to use roller and brush but I have a hvlp sprayer, can I use this and would I need to add a small amount of water to the paint or would this have a negative affect? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The Zinsser Allcoat Exterior products should not be thinned for application, they can be applied by brush, roller or airless spray but not HVLP as this would require too much thinning which will have an adverse effect on the performance of the product.
Sarah on 2019-06-04 16:49:21 | Question:
Hi, can I use allcoat exterior water based satin on an internal brick wall please? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Angela on 2019-05-09 17:51:22 | Question:
What paint do you recommend over either traditional linseed or acrylic glazing putty. The windows are cast iron lattice panels within wood frames. The glazing putty will be on the exterior. The panels are to be shot blasted and spray primed with Rustoleum 1080. Followed by 2 coats of Rustoleum Satin Combi colour. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Normally we would recommend Zinsser Cover Stain to prime linseed oil putty, it should also be fine over the acrylic putty however both should be allowed to dry sufficiently before painting.
Yohanna on 2019-04-26 14:59:12 | Question:
Hi, I need to paint an exterior aluminium roof fascia that was spot spray painted by the builder and now the spray painted areas are fading. Can I use All Coat anthracite grey to paint the whole fascia with a roller? Some of the fascia has silicone where it overlaps, can I simply paint over that with All Coat? Thanks. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) will not bond to silicone, this would need to be removed, the surface then cleaned to remove traces of silicone. Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) will take to the previously painted fascia. The gaps can be resealed after painting with a suitable sealant.
janine on 2019-04-17 21:21:37 | Question:
I'm going to use zinsser all coat on exterior wooden shop front. first I'll sand the wood to get any flakey off and wood fill etc but can I just paint straight over the wood with all coat or would you use different primer first? |

On any areas of bare timber/filler we would first recommend priming with Zinsser Cover Stain.
Annabel on 2019-04-10 14:07:34 | Question:
I want to use Zinsser allcoat exterior satin (water based) paint on unpainted mdf for fitted wardrobes. Should I prime it first and if so can it be any mdf primer or does it need to be a specific Zinnsser one? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
MDF should be primed with 1 coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 followed by 2 coats of either Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) or Zinsser Perma-White Interior. The surface should be free of any contaminant prior to application.
miriam on 2019-02-25 11:09:04 | Question: Hi, Can I used this on interior woodwork? thank you |

Tom Barton on 2018-11-13 10:17:03 | Question: Can you use this product for interior applications, for example a staircase with metal spindles and railings? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Yes, all of the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) products can be used internally. You still need to prime certain substrates as indicated on the tech data sheet, hardwoods, stained areas, etc. Please note Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Solvent Based) products cannot be used for interior projects.
Craig Beardmore on 2018-09-19 21:06:12 | Question: Hi would the all coat paint stick on varnished pinr wood? And would i need to do anything special for painting? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Assuming this is not a floor surface, if interior woodwork prime with Zinsser B-I-N first to get a good key. If exterior prime with Zinsser Cover Stain. Surfaces must be clean and sound before priming.
Debbie on 2018-08-18 11:37:12 | Question:
I'm wanting to paint our upvc white back door and door frame in Ral7016, Should i buy water based or solvent Zinsser allcoat? Also do i need to prime first? Thank you. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would recommend Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) for this. The Satin and Gloss versions are self priming onto this type of surface, apply 2-3 coats directly, no need for a primer. If the Matt finish is required, first prime with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3.
MTW on 2018-08-18 10:55:02 | Question: Would this paint be suitable (flexible enough) for a rolling garage door (weathered plastisol/ metal?) |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: We would instead recommend Rust-Oleum 3302 CombiPrimer Adhesion followed by Rust-Oleum CombiColor for this application.
carl on 2018-05-15 15:41:33 | Question: Can Zinsser Allcoat be applied directly to GRP doors that have been previously painted? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) can be applied directly to GRP or previously painted surfaces after abrading the surfaces with a fine grade of sandpaper followed by a solvent wipe using methylated spirits for GRP or suitable detergent/cleaner degreaser for previously painted surfaces. Then apply 2 coats of the AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based).
Paul on 2018-04-12 22:37:42 | Question: I want to change the colour of my white composite front door to grey. Would Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin paint be suitable for this purpose? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin can be applied directly to UPVC with no primer required. We would advise abrading the surfaces with a fine grade of sandpaper followed by a solvent wipe using methylated spirits. Then apply 2 coats of the AllCoat Exterior Satin.
Jonathan on 2018-03-23 16:12:34 | Question: I need to paint my exterior wooden cladding on my hourse. I treated it 3 years ago with Cuprinol Ducks Back. Will Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Satin paint over this without problems? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: We would recommend checking with Cuprinol to make sure the Ducks Back product can be overpainted, if it has weathered for 3 years it may be OK but some of these types of products contain waxes which will affect adhesion of subsequent paint coatings. Provided there is minimal wax content then Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) can be used.
John browne on 2017-12-12 10:00:07 | Question: Can you put zinzzer all coat on
Exterior hard wood ply |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) can be applied directly to plywood and can be used at lower temperatures. If you want to use Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin you will have to wait for warmer weather and first prime the plywood with Zinsser Cover Stain.
Mike on 2017-10-17 16:52:55 | Question: Hi,
I've just painted my exterior door in Sandtex 10 year Exterior gloss paint but I'm not happy with the results, even after applying a primer and two coats of gloss.
Could I paint over this gloss paint with your satin exterior paint without keying and applying an undercoat?
Also, do you offer a Sage colour? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin will be OK for this, however as we are heading towards cooler weather however it may be advisable to go for the Solvent Grade. Drying conditions will be poorer at this time of year which will affect the drying of the water based AllCoat. This is likely to cause issues if the coating gets caught in a shower of rain before it has fully cured. The AllCoat can go on directly without sanding or priming provided the surface is clean, existing coating is sound etc.
Ollie on 2017-10-15 20:55:06 | Question: I want to paint over my timber window frames which currently have a dark brown stain on them. Can I paint straight over with Zinsser allcoat exterior? Thanks |

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin can be applied directly to UPVC with no primer required. We would advise abrading the surfaces with a fine grade of sandpaper followed by a solvent wipe using methylated spirits. Then apply 2 coats of the AllCoat Exterior Satin.
julie michell on 2017-08-05 19:24:32 | Question:
We need to paint the exterior of a varnished conservatory. What product would you recommend? We've trying to do it as quickly as possible |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The Zinsser AllCoat Exterior water based range would be ideal for this application. We normally recommend a coat of Zinsser Cover Stain is applied first to block any staining and existing colours.
Denis Morton on 2017-07-24 16:50:04 | Question: Would allcoat be ok on bare mild steel stair stringers internal use. |

Toby Weller on 2017-03-14 17:05:58 | Question: Would like to paint an old light green powder coated metal furniture set - round table and four chairs - which is in reasonable condition save for a few small scratches that are showing signs of rust. Is this the right product for the job and can I paint directly on to the powder coating or does it need keying first? With care will I achieve a good finish with this paint or is it going to show the brush strokes? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Yes this product can be applied directly to powdercoat surfaces, clean and lightly sand to provide a key before application. Any areas of rust should be prepared and primed first with something like Rust-Oleum 3369/3380 CombiPrimer Anti-Corrosion.
Eddie A on 2016-08-10 14:30:23 | Question: I am looking to paint a section of lead flashing which has previously already being painted. Is Allcoat the correct product to use? and is a separate primer required? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin can be applied directly over existing paints after cleaning and light sanding. Apply two coats, no primer is required. If there are any areas of bare lead after preparation, prime first with a coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 and the apply 2 coats of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior.
Steve Pepper on 2016-05-02 08:22:04 | Question: Hi - I am just buying a new wooden summerhouse which has be treated as standard, but would like to paint in in blue and white - is you paint suitable for direct application without having a primer or undercoat? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin is self-priming and will adhere to any sound surface. The first coat of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin primes and seals the surface, providing a base for the second coat. The second and third coats (if required) complete the sealing process while providing additional moisture resistance and protection. Before painting, fill all nail holes and gouges with a proprietary filler. Where necessary, spot prime knots and sap streaks with Zinsser B-I-N. For new or unpainted cedar, redwood, or other resinous timbers prime with Zinsser Cover Stain.
Scott Manser on 2016-04-27 20:00:43 | Question: Is Zinsser allcoat exterior satin ok for use on Medite tricoya exterior mdf? It is for a shop fascia sign which will have enamel signwriting paint for lettering. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: According to the manufacturer Medite, they recommend water based paints are suitable for this substrate so on that basis Zinsser AllCoat Exterior should be fine to use.
Alan M on 2016-04-04 13:41:23 | Question: Can this be used straight onto tanalised timber without any primer or knotting? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: No, we would recommend treating any knots with Blackfriar Patent Knotting followed by 1 coat of Blackfriar Aluminium Wood Primer over all areas to be painted. Once dry finish with 2 coats of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin in your chosen colour.
Norman Reed on 2016-02-13 18:22:03 | Question: Will Allcoat Exterior bond onto (shiney) stainless steel tubing. We want to tone down hand railing that we have. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: No it won't. We would recommend priming the stainless steel with Rust-Oleum 3302 CombiPrimer Adhesion and then applying two coats of Rust-Oleum CombiColor in your desired colour and finish.
Martin on 2015-08-05 16:23:00 | Question: Is it necessary to use knotting on wood prior to using the Zinsser All Coat Exterior Satin?
( I have some old farm gates, previously painted where the knots have leaked some resin but what would look to be some while back) |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Yes it is, where necessary, spot prime any knots and sap streaks with Zinsser B-I-N Primer Sealer. After 45mins you can then start to apply the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin as requried.
