Designed to provide 30 and 60 minutes fire resistance on standard structural steel members in internal environments available in 2.5kg, 5kg and 20kg containers. It provides an easier and more efficient alternative to cladding steel members in plasterboard.

Topcoat Details

Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat is an oil based, decorative flame-retardant paint used to decorate and complete Thermoguard fire protection upgrading systems. Available in both Eggshell and Gloss finishes in nearly all BS, RAL and NCS colours.

Each Pack Contains:

  • 6m² - 2.5kg Thermocoat WI and 2.5lt Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat Eggshell or Gloss
  • 12m² - 5kg Thermocoat WI and 2.5lt Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat Eggshell or Gloss

  • 48m² - 20kg Thermocoat WI and 7.5lt Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat Eggshell or Gloss

Surface Preparation

Steelwork to be coated with Thermoguard Thermocoat WI must be primed with an anti-corrosion primer suited to the intended environment of the building and applied to the Manufacturer’s Specification. If your steel is bare, we can suggest after cleaning/preparation, mild steel can be primed with Thermoguard Steel Fire Paint Primer. If the steel has been galvanised then surfaces should be treated with Teamac Mordant Solution/ ‘T Wash before priming with Thermoguard Steel Fire Paint Primer.

Before applying Thermoguard Thermocoat WI, patch prime any damaged areas of primer and ensure the surface is dry, free from rust, oil, grease, dust and other contaminants. Existing decorative finishes must be removed.

System Application

To suitably primed steel, apply 1 coat of Thermocoat WI at 2.4m² per kilogram (325 microns WFT), allow to dry (minimum 10 hours at 20°C). Then apply 1 coat* of Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat Eggshell or Gloss at 8m² per litre in the colour of your choice.

*1 coat of Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat is normally sufficient but for dark contrasting colours 2 coats may be required.

Application Checklist

The following instructions are for on-site application only. For offsite application, refer to the Technical Department.

Ensure that:

  • The primer is compatible with Thermoguard Thermocoat WI and has been applied correctly.
  • The overcoating period for the primer has not been exceeded.
  • The correct primer is used for galvanised steel.
  • All damage to the primer has been repaired & re-primed.
  • Site and weather conditions are within specification.
  • Thermoguard Thermocoat WI is stored correctly.
  • Surface is clean, dry and free from contamination.
  • Correct spray equipment is available, if appropriate.
  • Application instructions have been read prior to commencement of work.
  • Ensure different basecoats are not applied on the same section of steel.
  • Equipment should be clean and free from contaminants or dried material.
  • Wet film gauges are available for use.

Application Conditions

Recommended for application to dry, protected, interior structural steels only. If Thermoguard Thermocoat WI is allowed to get wet, it is likely to become damaged and may cause blistering and wrinkling to occur.

Thermoguard Thermocoat WI should only be applied when the air and steel temperatures are above 4°C. Relative humidity should be below 80% for successful application. Steel surface temperature should be a minimum of 3°C above the dew point. Ensure the steel is dry and protected from contact with rain or condensation during the application, drying and curing process.

Please note: These packs are NOT suitable for hollow sections or 60min protection. If you require 60min Protection please see our Thermoguard Thermocoat WI 60min System for Universal Beams & Columns. Hi, Building Control have requested a DFT measurement - can you supply the DFT Schedule for 30/60/90 mins etc noted in the Thermoguard Datasheet so this can be checked by us on site? Thanks

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

The DFT schedule for 30/60/90 minutes is roughly 65% of the WFT measurement.

Please contact [email protected] if you require further assistance.

questions Nic Clifton on 2023-07-31 14:13:14
Question:

Dear Sir/Madam, We are looking at using Thermogaurd WO/WI Ultimate to paint some steelwork to be 30mins FR. Our fire risk assessor has pointed out that water jet is unsuitable for extinguishing according to one of the data sheets? Could you clarify why water jets are not suitable? Does this include Firefighter water hoses? FYI, they have stated that if water via firefighter use is not suitable, then they may not approve specification of this paint. Many thanks. Any queries please let me know. Nic Clifton [email protected] 07957395722

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Thank you for your enquiry, our Technical team will contact you directly regarding this enquiry.

questions Jarrod Burney on 2022-05-30 13:13:13
Question:

Hello, Building Regs have asked for a measure of the paint on the surface (RSJ) do you provide this?.

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

We do not carry out dry film thickness inspections unfortunately.
