Coo-Var Rust Converter
This rust converter is specially formulated for treating rust on iron and steel surfaces where full rust removal is not possible. Upon application, it transforms the rust into a stable black layer, ready for overcoating. The product is ideal for various industrial and domestic applications, providing a low-sheen finish once cured. Its application process is simple, requiring no thinning and easy clean-up with water.
Application Areas
This product is suitable for use on all iron and steel surfaces, including weathered steel structures, tools, and machinery. It is particularly useful in scenarios where rust cannot be fully removed, such as in tight corners or industrial equipment. For optimal results, ensure that the rusted surface is cleaned of loose millscale and flaky rust before application.
- Iron and steel surfaces.
- Weathered steel and structural metalwork.
- Machinery and tools.
Application Instructions
Before applying the rust converter, clean the surface to remove dust, dirt, grease, and loose rust or millscale. For best results, use a wire brush or power tools. Apply the product with a brush or roller directly to the rusted surface. It is recommended to apply when temperatures are between 5°C and 25°C, and when humidity levels are between 40% and 90%.
Once applied, allow 8 hours before overcoating with water-based paints and 24 hours for other types of paint. Do not thin the product and avoid using in extreme temperature conditions.
Limitations and Restrictions
Do not use this product on non-ferrous metals or surfaces that are not rusted. It is also unsuitable for application in temperatures below 5°C or over 25°C, or in humidity levels outside of the recommended range. Always decant into a separate container for use, and never return any unused material to the original container, as this could cause contamination.
For best performance, consider using Coo-Var Zinc Phosphate Primer as a subsequent coat after applying this rust converter. Always refer to the downloadable datasheet for full technical and safety details.
Health and Safety
While the rust converter is non-flammable and contains no hazardous components under REACH criteria, always wear appropriate protective clothing and ensure good ventilation during application. Avoid contact with skin and eyes, and do not inhale vapours. If the product comes into contact with the skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with water. Dispose of any waste in accordance with local regulations.
