Zinsser Gardz - High-Performance Water-Based Sealer
Penetrates and seals porous surfaces. It is particularly effective in preventing common drywall issues such as blistering, bubbling, and peeling by binding and strengthening the substrate. Zinsser Gardz is applied as a milky-blue colour, drying to a water-clear finish.
Key Features
- Deep Penetration: Penetrates deeply into porous surfaces to form a durable, moisture-resistant barrier.
- Fast Drying: Dries quickly to a hard, clear film, ready for finishing coats in just 3 hours.
- Versatile Application: Suitable for a variety of surfaces including damaged and new drywall, plaster, and textured finishes.
- Low Odour and Easy Cleanup: The water-based formula has low odour and cleans up easily with soap and water.
- Enhances Surface Strength: Binds and hardens soft or crumbly textures, providing a sound base for paint or wallpaper.
- Seals Residual Adhesive: Effectively seals in old wallpaper adhesive to prevent future issues with new finishes.
Applications
Gardz is ideal for a wide range of applications, including:
- Damaged Drywall: Seals and stabilises damaged drywall facing paper, providing a sound surface for repairs.
- New Drywall: Uniformly seals new drywall and joint compound to prevent splotchy and uneven finishes.
- Plaster: Suitable for freshly applied plaster after a 24-hour cure, as well as older, bare plaster surfaces.
- Calcimine: Penetrates and seals old, chalky calcimine plaster more effectively than oil-based coatings.
- Wallpaper Residue: Completely seals in residual wallpaper adhesive to prevent reactivation by water-based topcoats.
- Textured Finishes: Seals and hardens textured walls and popcorn ceilings before applying primer or paint.

Questions
Question about the product
Polly on 2023-01-04 08:59:19 | Question:
Would this be suitable for stopping chalky, powdery residue coming through our emulsion painted walls. We have a relatively new extension (5 years) with emulsion on lining paper on plaster and we keep having to repaint as this powdery stuff appears on the walls a few weeks after painting. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately no this would not be suitable, please can you provide pictures of the area in question to [email protected]
Jacqui on 2021-11-27 15:48:46 | Question:
We have had new plasterboard on our walls and skimmed, would this be the right product to apply to the new walls rather than a wet wash |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes this can be used on newly plastered areas to seal the surface prior to painting.
Nick on 2017-01-02 22:13:07 | Question:
We have a problem internal wall. It was originally builtas an external wall late 18th/early 19th century of mixed north pennine stone with lime mortar. For about 45 years it has been used an an internal wall, covered with gypsum plaster and paint. In patches something causes any paint applied to bubble after about 6 months. Would this product help to solve the problem ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Based on your description we would recommend using Zinsser AllCoat (Solvent-Based) and leave this as the finish. Zinsser AllCoat (Solvent-Based) is breathable and will let traces of moisture through the paint film without causing the coating to bubble up, it also has good resistance to high pH. Zinsser Gardz would seal the substrate and could cause a build up of moisture behind the coating resulting in blisters forming over time.
Geraldine on 2016-06-17 17:31:56 | Question:
I have grease stains on my emulsion wall, can I use this as a blocker before reprinting? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser Gardz is not a stain blocker, you would need to clean the area well to remove as much grease as possible then apply Zinsser B-I-N. Best recommendations are to spot prime the stain, allow to dry for a minimum of 45mins before applying a full coat to the whole area or to a natural break, allow to dry for another 45mins and then apply your chosen decorative finish (paint or wallpaper).
muriel dyga on 2016-02-11 12:16:20 | Question:
Can I paint over this with gloss paint or silk paint? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Nearly all conventional decorative finishes can be used over Zinsser Gardz including emulsions, wallpaper, solvent based primer, undercoat and gloss.
robert jones on 2015-06-16 17:08:28 | Question:
Is Zinsser Gardz effective in stabilising distemper coated ceilings? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, we don't recommend water based products to be used over distemper. We would recommend either Zinsser Grade 1 or Zinsser AllCoat (Solvent-Based).
