Description

Teamac Black Tar Varnish

The Black Tar Varnish is a high-performance, synthetic tar varnish specifically formulated for use in industrial, agricultural, and marine environments. Offering a glossy black finish, this varnish is perfect for protecting weathered wood, metal, and other surfaces exposed to harsh conditions. Its non-toxic formula ensures safety during application, while its durable composition guarantees long-lasting protection.

Application Areas

This varnish is versatile and can be applied to a variety of surfaces including barns, farm buildings, roofs, and marine vessels. It's particularly effective in outdoor settings where surfaces are subject to moisture, UV rays, and other environmental factors. The varnish provides a tough, waterproof layer that helps prevent deterioration and prolongs the life of the treated materials.

  • Weathered wood: Ideal for both indoor and outdoor use, protecting surfaces from rot and decay.
  • Metal surfaces: Prevents rust and corrosion, maintaining the structural integrity of metal buildings and equipment.
  • Marine applications: Suitable for boats and other marine structures, providing resistance against saltwater and harsh marine environments.

Application Instructions

Before applying the varnish, ensure that all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from contaminants. New wood should be sanded to create an adequate key for the varnish, while existing painted surfaces should be cleaned and sanded to ensure proper adhesion. The varnish should be mixed well before use and applied with a brush without thinning. For best results, allow the first coat to dry for at least 8 hours before applying a second coat.

Limitations and Recommendations

This varnish should not be overcoated with conventional solvent-based paints as this will cause black bleeding through the topcoat. It is recommended to use Teamac Black Tar Varnish for all subsequent coats to ensure a consistent finish. The product is not suitable for application in confined spaces without adequate ventilation due to its VOC content. Users should always refer to the downloadable data sheet for more detailed information on safe handling and application.

Health and Safety

  • UN Number: 1263

May cause respiratory irritation and damage to organs through prolonged exposure. It is also toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. The product does not contain Diisocyanates. Always use protective gloves and ensure adequate ventilation when applying the varnish. For more detailed safety information, please refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

questions Ben Short on 2024-04-19 16:45:17
Question:

Hello I am renovating an old clinker boat, a 1970’s motor launch. Had to replace some planks with new wood, others remain in place. Wood is Khaya. The hull has now been sanded with 80 grit. Would Teamav black tar varnish be a good bet or would Teamac Hull blacking be preferable? I think my preference would be the former but would like to know your opinion. Thankyou. Ben Short

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Assuming the hull is clean, dry, sound, watertight and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Teamac Hull Blacking for this application.

This has excellent water resistance.

Question:

My boat currently has comastic on the Hull, can I use this as Hull blacking over comastic? And how does it compare to comastic in terms of coverage and longevity? Thanks.

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

No, for this application we would recommend Teamac Hull Blacking, this will be suitable for application over Cosmatic assuming the areas are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet.

But as this is a bitumen based product any further coating will need to be bitumen based also.
