System Structure

Primer for uncoated mineral substrates | Sikagard 850 Primer |
Primer for coated mineral substrates or coated wood | Sikagard 850 Activator |
Top coat | Sikagard 850 Clear |
Please note: When applied to bare mineral surface, Sikagard 850 Clear may provide a wet look effect. To reduce/eliminate this effect, the following build-up is recommended:
Sikagard 552W Aquaprimer + Sikagard 850 Activator + Sikagard 850 Clear
Application
Suitable substrates are:
- Coated substrates such as coated concrete, masonry, cementitious render or wood
Important notes:
- On substrates with a rough surface profile, it will be difficult to produce an even coating thickness
- This may result in reduced protection and cleanability
- Pre-levelling or smoothing the surface is recommended before coating application
- Existing coatings must be tested to confirm their compatibility with Sikagard 850 Activator and Sikagard 850 Clear top coat
Surface preparation:
- Substrate must be clean, dry, firmly bonded and free of all contaminants such as dirt, oil, grease and loose friable material which can reduce the adhesion of the coating
- Very smooth substrates may be slightly roughened by light grinding
- Prepare the substrate using light mechanical preparation equipment, steam cleaning or low water pressure
Application:
- Strictly follow installation procedures as defined in method statements, application manuals and working instructions which must always be adjusted to the actual site conditions
- Important: On rough substrates, use a brush to apply primer and make sure the primer covers all the surface including voids
- Note: To prevent air bubbles affecting the finish, do not 'over' brush, roller or spray
- Apply Sikagard 850 Activator evenly over the prepared coating with a brush, fleece roller or airless spray equipment at the required consumption rate
Coverage
- Approximately 50 to 100g/m²
Drying Time
- Note: A drying time of 1 to 2 hours at ambient temperature and 40% relative humidity is required to allow the formation of a consistent primer film
- Note: A higher relative humidity will extend the drying time
- Note: Do not to exceed 5 hours after priming the surface before applying Sikagard 850 Clear
Clean Up
- Clean all tools and application equipment with white spirit immediately after use.
- Hardened material can only be mechanically removed
