401 Epoxy Floor Primer is a two pack, water dispersible epoxy based primer/sealer/clear coating, especially formulated to meet the technological and ecological requirements of modern building and industrial practice.
401 Epoxy Floor Primer can act as a curing membrane to increase hardness of concrete by allowing full hydration of cement and can be applied to new concrete, 7 days after being poured. 401 Epoxy Floor Primer in this circumstance must be left as a standalone sealer or overcoated with 303 Epoxy Floor Paint only.
401 Epoxy Floor Primer is non-flammable and solvent free, is low odour, and may be applied to dry or damp surfaces. 401 Epoxy Floor Primer has excellent adhesion to most building materials, is nontoxic once cured, and consequently is a highly versatile material lending itself to application in many different types of location and circumstances.
For lower temperatures (5°C - 30°C) or when a faster overcoating times are required a Winter Grade version of this product is available - Click Here for the Technical Data Sheet.

Slip Resistance
Should a non-slip finish be required, 508 Fine Particle Anti-Slip Additive can be added to the coating during mixing prior to application to produce an even and easily cleanable texture to the dried surface.
Alternatively the 'Anti Slip' option can be selected when purchasing the product and the 250 micron grade of 508 Anti-Slip Additive will be added at 2.4% prior to receipt.
Results based on adding 508 Fine Particle Anti-Slip Additive (250 Micron Grade) @ 2.4%.
- 5kg unit - add 200g
- 15kg unit - add 600g
- Dry PTV: 50-52
- Wet PTV: 40-42
PTV Ratings:
Slip potential classifications from Pendulum Test Values.
Slip Resistance Values | |
---|---|
PTV | Slip Potential |
< 25 | High |
25 - 35 | Moderate |
> 35 | Low |
The above results must only be used as a general guideline as the slip resistance of a cured resin coating can vary considerably due to many factors including: application technique, variations in film thickness, dispersion of the anti-slip texturing additive and the surface variations of the substrate and location to where it will be applied.
To obtain accurate PTV readings that are site specific (if required) it is strongly recommended that a slip assessment pendulum test is undertaken on each specific site after completion of the installation when the resin has fully cured.

Coverage
- A 5kg pack is sufficient to prime 25m² of surface (15kg pack pro rata)
Surface Preparation
- Surfaces should be sound, clean and free from standing water, laitance, oil, grease, and other contaminants
- New concrete should be allowed to cure for a minimum of 21 days
- Floors should be mechanically abraded, scarified, grit blasted or acid etched where any subsequent coating is to be applied over the 401 Epoxy Floor Primer
Note: For steel work a coat of 404 Epoxy Metal Primer is recommended as a primer instead of 401 Epoxy Floor Primer.
Note: Substrates with high moisture content or oil contamination can still be coated in most instances by the inclusion of one of our specialist primers. Please see 402 Damp Proof Coating and 403 Oil Tolerant Primer for full details.
Mixing:
- 401 Epoxy Floor Primer is supplied in pre-weighed containers ready for mixing
- Pour the contents of the base container into the curing agent container and thoroughly mix, preferably by mechanical means until a uniform consistency is achieved
- A low speed drill with paddle attachment is recommended for mixing operations
Mixing Ratio:
- By Volume = 1 Base : 3.09 Curing Agent
- By Weight = 35.1 Base : 100 Curing Agent
Note: Thinning of the material is not usually necessary. However, it is permissible to thin 401 Epoxy Floor Primer by the addition of up to 20% by volume of clear water. This will reduce the viscosity and facilitate application.
Application
- Apply by brush, roller or airless spray at a nominal rate of 5m² per kg
- As a sealer or clear coating, a second coat should be applied after a minimum of 16 hours, and before a maximum of 48 hours
- As a primer, overcoating may be commenced as soon as the initial milky appearance has cleared, typically after 2-4 hours
- Ensure good ventilation during application
Cleaning
- Clean equipment with 109 Tool Cleaner or a blend of 109 Tool Cleaner and water, immediately after use
Curing
- 401 Epoxy Floor Primer will be touch dry following 6 hours cure @20°C, and hard dry after 16 hours cure @ 20°C
- Full chemical resistance will be attained following 7 days cure @ 20°C
- Good ventilation is essential to allow satisfactory evaporation of water from the film
Limitations
- Do not apply to uncured surfaces
- Do not apply to surfaces previously treated with water repellent chemicals
- Do not apply at temperatures below 3°C, or if there is a risk of frost during the initial curing period
- Do not use 401 Epoxy Floor Primer that has exceeded the stated pot life
- Protect from water splashes during the first 24 hours of cure, as the fresh film is sensitive to water
- Relative humidity must be below 85% during the early stages of curing
- Do not apply in badly ventilated areas
Storage & Shelf Life
- Store in dry conditions, out of direct sunlight, at temperatures between 10°C and 25°C
- 401 Epoxy Floor Primer has a minimum shelf life of 12 months when stored in original, unopened containers in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
Health & Safety
- Avoid contact of the material with skin and eyes
- Wear gloves and goggles
- Wash off splashes immediately with soap and water
- Any eye contamination must be rapidly irrigated with copious amounts of clean water, and immediate medical attention sought
- Please refer to Material Safety Data Sheet for additional information
- 401 Epoxy Floor Primer shall be applied strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions

Questions
Question about the product
tony young on 2020-03-25 17:08:02 | Question:
Is your primer suitable for applying to self-levelling compound prior to painting? I have used Mapei 1210 compound. I would like to either paint the floor or simply seal it to stop staining. Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
You would need to speak to Mapei's Technical Department regarding this, you will need to check whether they are happy for this levelling compound to be left as a wearing course and coated with a water based epoxy. If the answer to both is yes, then after suitable preparation our 401 Epoxy Floor Primer could be applied. | |
