Damp Proof Membranes

A crucial stage for new builds and refurbishment, where a structural DPM may be missing or damaged, or where residual construction moisture is present in the floor.

A liquid damp proof membrane, such as Ardex DPM 1 C, will protect the floorcovering installation from residual construction moisture and rising damp, where the highest measurable moisture readings are present (up to 98% RH). Its ability to adhere to damp concrete during low temperatures make it ideal for use on UK worksite conditions.

Where a structural DPM is in place, and residual construction moisture is present, a Moisture Vapour Suppressant can be applied to floors with moisture readings up to 95% RH, speeding up the installation of the floorcovering by allowing the early laying of an Ardex Levelling and Smoothing Compound in as little as 2 hours. Contact Rawlins Technical on 0113 2455450 (option 2) or send a message to [email protected] for advice on a suitable Moisture Vapour Suppressant for your flooring project.

By minimising distruption to business and public areas, Ardex floor screeds have been used on time-critical projects across the UK such as King’s Cross Underground Station and Selfridges Foodhall. These ultra rapid drying screeds were applied overnight, ready for areas to be open to the public the following morning.

Projects and Use Cases

Ardex products have been used in projects all across the UK in many different sectors:

  • Transport
  • Education
  • Leisure
  • Retail
  • Health

Transport

Train stations, tube stations, bus stations, airports - these transport hubs see heavy footfall from thousands of commuters making their way between platforms and terminals. For contractors, returning areas to use quickly is paramount to avoid disruption and confusion to detoured passengers, and losses in revenue to business.

Ardex products are ideal for this scenario with their fast turnaround times - it's why they're the manufacturer of choice for works specified on the London Underground. Station floors can be screeded and tiled after the last train at night, ready for the first train the very next morning.

Terminal 1, Heathrow Airport

Arditex NA was used to refurbish over 40,000m2 of flooring that handles 12 million passengers per year.

King Cross Train Station

Ardex A 35 was used for a quick turn-around, able to accept walking traffic in as little as 3 hours and accept installation of floor coverings after just 24 hours. This formed part of a 4,300m2 screeding, tiling and grouting solution in the Northern ticket hall at King’s Cross St Pancras Underground station.

Nottingham Train Station

Ardex products were used in a £150 million investment in Nottingham Train Station that included a modernised station entrance, new ticket office, revamped first class lounge, a newly-installed platform and canopy, as well as a full refit of the surrounding cafés and shops.

Ardex A 38 Ultra Rapid Drying Cement for Screeds was ideal for the project as it can be tiled just 4 hours after application, regardless of thickness.

Glasgow Airport

Several Ardex products were used to create over 3000m2 of new flooring, installed over multiple substrates, while the airport remained fully operational to passengers. One of the most significant and comprehensive upgrades to the main terminal since it opened in 1966, the refurbishment works included the installation of a new floor to the Central Pier.

Piccadilly Circus Underground Station

Ardex products were first used at Piccadilly Circus Underground Station over 30 years ago, including the fixing of over half a million tiles to the walls, floors and ceilings. Since then, thousands of commuters have passed through the station every day that has seen Ardex products stand the test of time.

Education

Schools, nurseries, colleges, universities, museums - all have flooring surfaces that must withstand high foot traffic from students, staff and patrons in all directions, walking, running and jumping. For educational facilities and buildings, repairs during term time must be quickly installed to minimise disruption to class timetables and the quality of teaching.

Ardex products are fast track, offering high performance and incredibly fast installation. Arditex NA Levelling and Smoothing Compound reduces the need for intensive preparation and priming and allows you to apply floorcoverings from as little as 3 hours.

Ardex products have been used in projects that include:

  • Franklin Sixth Form College, Lincolnshire - 720m2 canteen corridor area
  • V & A Museum Expansion - 1200m2 courtyard area with 14,000 porcelain tiles
  • Peterborough Regional College - 2500m2 main reception, corridors and refectory
  • Mearns Castle High School - damp refurbishment
  • St George’s Court - home of the Ministry of Defence and Government departments - main reception and staircase refurbishment
  • Scottish Parliament - refurbishment
  • Loughborough College - rising damp refurbishment

Leisure

Hotels and leisure facilities like swimming pools, music halls and sports grounds, experience a high number of visitors and environmental factors. With such tight margins in the hospitality sector, areas that need repairs or refurbishment must be returned to action quickly so not to affect profits - an ideal case for Ardex.

Such Ardex project include:

  • Newmarket Racecourse - Rose Terrace, a 250m2 terrace that required an unbonded screed from 50-100mm in thickness, laid to a fall and then waterproofed
  • Royal Liverpool Golf Club - 85m2 billiards room refurbished for hosting The Men’s Open Championship for the 13th time
  • Coalville Leisure Centre, Leicester - 2500m2 of flooring across the complex that includes:
    • 8-lane 25m main pool and learner pool with moveable flooring
    • 120 station gym, 25 spin cycles and 2 exercise studios
    • Café
    • 8 court sports hall and 3 squash courts
    • Sauna, steam and spa pool
  • Kew Gardens - Royal Botanic Gardens, Evolution House - new flooring inside a greenhouse that mimics the extremely dry climate of south-west Australia
  • Butlins Bognor Regis Pool Complex - 6300m2 modernisation programme
  • The Royal Albert Hall - refurbishment of the main ground floor atrium area
  • St Andrew Holborn - 600m2 floor refurbishment in this 1,000 year-old building
  • Thames Lido - Grade II listed former public baths
  • Glasgow Club Scotstoun Leisure Centre - £750,000 refurbishment

Retail

The retail sector is another where time is money, and refurbishment projects must be mindful of a fast turnaround and as little disruption as possible. Retail floors, such as those found in shops, cafes and restaurants, see high footfall that requires high-strength products from the likes of Ardex.

  • British Museum - Great Court restaurant - new flooring project
  • Selfridge’s Food Hall - flooring refurbishment for 200 million visitors per year
  • Royal Bank of Scotland - grade 2 listed tiles - granite floor installation

Health

Floors in hospitals, clinics, and GP's surgeries have to withstand not just high levels of foot traffic from patients and staff, but also from heavy machinery and wheeled units like beds and equipment. The healthcare sector also experiences budgetary restraints that require a long-term flooring solution more than many other industries and commercial installations.

  • Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust - 9000m2 new build project that includes:
    • 4 operating theatre suites
    • 2 major treatment rooms
    • A pre-operative assessment unit
    • Pre-discharge ward and an admission department
    • Outpatient clinics
    • Substantial radiology facilities
    • Bridge corridor links to the main hospital
  • North Manchester General Hospital - 1800m2 Accident and Emergency department refurbishment
  • Birmingham Children’s Hospital - charity refurbishment project to main entrance lobby and café
