Fire Protection FAQs
Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information.
Thank you for the enquiry, unfortunatley we do not have a product to recommend for this application.
If you are to use a system with a separate basecoat and topcoat then the topcoat must remain intact to protect the intumescent layer.
Providing the topcoat is regularly checked and maintained then you shouldn’t need to re-apply the intumescent, only the topcoat where needed.
Assuming this is for Universal Beams or Columns then we could recommend Bollom Brosteel Ultra 60 - 60min System For Universal Beams & Columns.
Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information.
The Ardenbrite range of paints does not provide any level of Fire Protection, we can offer Fire Protection paints for many substrates and have contacted you directly for more information to assist you with this enquiry.
Thank you for the enquiry, please see our detailed blog post Painting the Walls around a Fireplace or Multi Fuel Stove for advice and recommendations.
Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information.
This is something you would need to check with your fire officer to be certain but if the pipe doesn't pass through the fire rated celing below, I'd assume it wouldn't be required.
Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information.
I'm afraid we currently have nothing we could recommend for application on to polystyrene to offer any level of fire protection.
To apply for certification, please follow this link Bollom Fire Certificate Application.
Providing you are looking to achieve UK Class 0/Euro Class B, we can recommend Thermoguard Fire Varnish BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System for your application.
Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information.
Thank you for the enquiry, please see our detailed blog post on this subject for recommendations. Painting the Walls around a Fireplace or Multi Fuel Stove.
Unfortunately the manufacturers do not produce sample pots, if you require assistance with a specification to fire protect doors please contact our technical team.
Assuming this is standard universal beams and columns in a domestic residential property with steels located in interior, dry environments needing 30 minute protection we would recommend Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ 30min System for Steel.
We would need to know the composition of the headboard so that we can match it as closely as we can to a test?
Unfortunately we don't have any fire retardant paint for ceiling tiles.
It isn't. Assuming more than just a primer was applied to the steel we would have to recommend complete removal before re-application of a coloured intumescent system.
This would depend on the level of fire protection required (i.e. Class 1, Class 0, 30min, 60min, etc.), the type of wood the ladder is made from and whether it is bare or previously coated?
We can recommend our Thermoguard Door Upgrade packs, with options for already-painted doors and bare timber.
We would recommend Thermoguard Wallcoat 30 & 60 Minute System.
Assuming a Class 1 or Class 0 finish is required we'd recommend Thermoguard Timbercoat BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System for a coloured paint finish or Thermoguard Fire Varnish BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System for a clear varnish finish.
Unfortunately we wouldn't be able to offer any products for your application as although we could offer a product to protect the outer fabric, the internal foam wouldn't be compliant.
See Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ 30min System for Steel.
We would need to know;
- Level of fire protection required (i.e. 30, 60, 90min, etc.)
- Orientation (horizontal or vertical)
- Number of sides to be painted (all sides, 3 sides, 1 flange, etc.)
- Environment (internal, external, car park, chemical exposure, etc.)
- Application on site or in shop
Thermoguard Timbercoat BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System would be our suggestion, the burn marks may need spot priming after cleaning with something like Zinsser B-I-N first so they don't bleed through as a stain.
In order for us to be able to advise, please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;
- Timber thickness
- Type of timber (i.e. pine, mdf, plywood, etc.)
- Type of Timber surface (i.e. T&G, feather edge / shiplap cladding, solid panels / sheets, etc.)
- Internal or external
- Use (i.e. floor, wall cladding, ceiling, etc.)
Is any proposed fire protection coating to be applied to the 6mm plywood or the 20mm douglas fir?
You cannot apply fire rated varnishes over previously painted surfaces (existing varnishes and stains are OK but not opaque paints), so you would instead need to apply something like Zeroflame Fire Retardant Paint over the area which you can then overcoat with your own paint (see guidelines on overcoating on the product data sheet) to bring it back to the colour and finish of your choice.
Thank you for your enquiry, to enable us to be able to advise, please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;

- Orientation (horizontal or vertical)
- Number of sides to be painted (all sides, 3 sides, 1 flange, etc.)
- Environment (internal, external, car park, chemical exposure, etc.)
- Application on site or in shop
Alternatively you can just forward us drawings, fabrication/cutting lists and we'll extract the information from them but in that instance we'd need some guidance as to what to allow for i.e. all steels on first floor, etc.
Unfortunately we don't have any fire protection paints specifically for a hose.
No, contact our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2) to discuss the requirements of your project in more depth.

We wouldn't have a product suitable for this application.
Please see available options HERE
We don't have any epoxy products for this application but you could try something like Envirograf Stoveseal to see if this would work for you.
We could only suggest Thermoguard Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat for this application. Due to you not knowing exactly how hot the surfaces gets we would suggest trialling a small area to see how it performs before painting the whole area.
Yes, see their range of 'Interchar' products.
We would instead recommend you do not use your fire again until you are able to replace this.
If you are trying to maintain the level of fire protection the render currently has we would instead suggest trialling Thermoguard Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat.
Please see details on upgrading solid timber doors HERE.
Thermoguard Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat is suitable for interior and exterior use as stated on the information on the product page.
Envirograf do a product called Envirograf Fire Protection Coating for UPVC which may be suitable but we'd need you to contact our Technical Team with some further details on 0113 2455450 (option 2) to confirm.
Thank you for your enquiry, in order for us to be able to advise on which product to select we will need to know what level of fire protection your authority requires - for examples BS Class 1, Class 0, EN Class B, 30min, 60min, etc.
We offer a variety of door upgrade products which can be found HERE.
Please see our Blog post Upgrades For Fire Doors for more information. We would also recommend you contact your relevant authority for advise on this matter.
Assuming that the steel has the required level of fire protection already, the topcoat should be as recommended by the manufacturer of the intumescent paint used. If this is not known, in certain instances on small projects something like Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat could be used if approved by the relevant authority on the project - for larger projects please contact our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2).

Yes but these are only supplied upon request with a purchase of the fire stopping products and not separately.
We do not offer a clear fluid but we do have a coloured paint system that can be applied to certain types of wallpaper - Thermoguard Wallcoat BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System.
When applying over wallpaper the 25m² pack size coverage should be reduced to 20m² and the 100m² pack to 80m².
The majority of intumescent paints we offer are able to be spray applied, however in order for us to be able to advise which system to use we would require as much of the following information as possible;
- Level of fire protection required (i.e. 30, 60, 90min, etc.)
- Each steel section dimension (i.e. 254x146x37 UB)

We do not supply anything meeting this description.
Can you advise what level of fire protection would satisfy your fire regulation requirements and building control please?
Thank you, please provide us with an image of the door(s) (if possible) and as much information as possible for the below points;
- Style of door? (i.e. panelled, ledge & brace, etc.)
- Solid or hollow core? - (please note we cannot provide anything to upgrade hollow doors)
- Door size? (height and width)
- Door thickness? (include thickness at thinnest point (i.e. panel))
- Number of doors to do?
- Clear or coloured finish required?
- Bare or previously painted?
Assuming the section has a wall thickness of at least 4mm, you would require 1 litre of Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+. If the steel is to remain visible in the property, this should be topcoated with Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ Finish.
Thank you for your enquiry, in order for us to be able to advise, please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;
- Each steel section dimension (i.e. 254x146x37 UB)
- Quantity and length of each section (or overall meterage for each section)

Assuming 30min fire protection is required, Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ 30min System for Steel is a popular choice.
Please contact our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2) to discuss your project.
Thank you for your enquiry, in order to be able to advise we would firstly need to know what level of fire protection your building control require you to achieve?
Also, what is the exposed area requiring protection - i.e. beams, underside of floorboards, columns, etc?
We would suggest looking at the Envirograf Door Upgrade Varnish System.
Providing the steel is in an internal environment and is already primed, we'd recommend our Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ 30min System For Steel which includes a white intumescent coating and a coloured flame retardant topcoat.
Assuming a Class 1/0 level of protection is required, Hydron Nu-Flame Clear Impregnation can be applied to bare timber leaving it virtually unchanged aesthetically.
We currently have no products we could offer to achieve the new A1 or A2 fire classifications.
We'd recommend Thermoguard Timbercoat BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System for application on to MDF to achieve a UK Class 1 finish.
You would need to seek advice from your authority as to the level of fire protection required and contact our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2) once this is known.
You can find our Door Upgrade Products HERE
To be able to advise you need to ask what level of fire protection would be required on your timber to deem it OK to not have to be removed. If you can provide us with this information we can then advise if we have a product that will acheive the required protection.
We would recommend you seek the advice of a qualified and reputable local log burner installer who may recommend either removal completely of the mantle or protecting by means of physical board or similar instead.
If it is deemed safe and you still wish to apply something as a precaution then you could choose any of our fire protection coatings for timber of your choice.
Assuming you require 30min protection for an internal, dry, heated environment we would suggest Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ 30min System for Steel.
Hydron Nu-Flame Synthetic & Fabric Protector provides protection against fire for artwork and displays. We also have Thermoguard Flame Retardant Additive however, this is a special flame retardant agent to be added to conventional, single pack decorative, solvent or water based paints when used over a complete Thermoguard fire protection system for colour/finish change.
You haven't mentioned what level of fire protection you require, but assuming 30min protection is required (please check with your authority) then we would suggest Thermoguard Fire Varnish 30 & 60 Minute System.
Assuming this is a small domestic project and 30min protection is required we would Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ 30min System for Steel which is available in any colour (including black) and comes in Eggshell or Gloss finishes.
Please see details of Envirograf Door Upgrade Varnish System. Download the 'Door Upgrading Technical Data' document from the 'Attachments' tab on the product page to check the suitability of your doors. Sikkens water based stains are suggested to be used if desired prior to application of the system.
Yes, assuming the plywood is bare we can offer a clear coating or a coloured coating system depending on your preference.
Assuming the loft hatch is timber a minimum of 10mm thick and requires 30min protection we would suggest Thermoguard Timbercoat 30 & 60 Minute System.
We would need something further information here - i.e. is the plasterboard/wood in question around the fire itself (i.e. surround, mantle, etc.) or is it in other areas of the room? Also, what level of fire protection is your authority requesting these surfaces be brought up to? Please contact our Technical Team with the answers to these questions on 0113 2455450 (option 2).
We have two options to suggest as a starting point depending on what level of fire protection you wish to achieve;
Most of our fire protection systems can come in the colour and finish of your choice, so black would be no issue for the system to come in for example meaning you would not have to worry about overcoating.
We have two options to suggest as a starting point depending on what level of fire protection you wish to achieve;
- Thermoguard Timbercoat BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System
- Thermoguard Timbercoat 30 & 60 Minute System
We do not have any fire protection coatings that can be applied to glass.
All of the intumescent paints we offer for steel have their own range of topcoats that can be used to provide protection and colour to the steel once coated in intumescent paint. If you have a specific product in mind we can advise on the range of topcoats for that product.
Thank you for your enquiry, in order for us to be able to comment, please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;
- Size of surface area to paint
- Timber thickness
- Level of Fire Protection required (Class 1, Class 0, 30min, 60min, etc.)
- Type of timber (i.e. pine, mdf, plywood, etc.)
- Type of Timber surface (i.e. T&G, feather edge / shiplap cladding, solid panels / sheets, etc.)
- Internal or external
- Use (i.e. floor, wall cladding, ceiling, etc.)
- Clear or coloured coating required?
- Bare or previously coated?
Assuming a level of fire protection is required we would suggest Thermoguard Fire Varnish BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System or Thermoguard Fire Varnish 30 & 60 Minute System - whichever satisfies the requirements of your authority.
We would recommend carrying out a sample area first to ensure you are happy with the appearance prior to coating the full area.
All the intumescent systems we offer for fire protection to steel are coloured and not clear.
Assuming BS Class 1/0 Surface Spread of Flame protection is required we would recommend Zeroflame Fire Retardant Paint. If this is not the level of fire protection required, please advise.
There is no charge for the issue of certification after use, however for us to be able to advise whether any of the products we offer would be suitable for your project we would require an image of the door(s) (if possible) and as much information as possible for the below points;
- Level of Fire Protection required? (i.e. 30min, 60min, etc.)
We do not offer any intumescent paints for steel that hold BBA certification due to them being unable to carry out fire testing. Instead they are reliant on fire test centres such as Exova, BRE etc. of which all the intumescent paints for steel we offer have been tested at such facilities and copies of certificates are freely available.
In order for us to be able to advise which product would be best for your project, please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;
- Level of fire protection required (i.e. 30, 60, 90min, etc.)
- Each steel section dimension (i.e. 254x146x37 UB)
- Quantity and length of each section (or overall meterage for each section)
- Orientation (horizontal or vertical)
- Number of sides to be painted (all sides, 3 sides, 1 flange, etc.)
- Environment (internal, external, car park, chemical exposure, etc.)
- Application on site or in shop
Alternatively you can just forward us drawings, fabrication/cutting lists and we'll extract the information from them but in that instance we'd need some guidance as to what to allow for i.e. all steels on first floor, etc.
Providing your doors are suitable then Envirograf Door Upgrade Paint System or Envirograf Door Upgrade Varnish System may be suitable.
We would suggest Envirograf 3-2-1 Standard Fire Retardant Liquid for this application. We would recommend the seller carries out their own due dilligence to ensure this will meet the requirements of their products/regulations.
Thank you for your enquiry, to be able to advise, please provide us with the following additional information;
- Timber thickness
- Level of Fire Protection required (Class 1, Class 0, 30min, 60min, etc.)
- Type of timber (i.e. pine, mdf, plywood, etc.)
- Type of Timber surface (i.e. T&G, feather edge / shiplap cladding, solid panels / sheets, etc.)
- Internal or external
- Use (i.e. floor, wall cladding, ceiling, etc.)
- Clear or coloured coating required?
- Bare or previously coated?
Assuming that it would not be subjected to moisture and 30 minutes is the level of protection required we would suggest Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ 30min System for Steel.
Bullet Roof Mono achieved BROOF T4 fire rating.
Generally it is OK to box in steelwork with fire rated board instead of using an intumescent paint however in this instance it sounds as though there will be a combination of exposed steel and the fire board. We would advise discussing with your building inspector to check they are OK with the proposal before purchasing any paint.
Yes, our intumescent paint systems for steel are available in nearly all RAL and BS colours.
Unfortunately we do not have any intumescent paints that would achieve 1 hr on ductwork.
Certainly, please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;
We would suggest seeking approval from your authority for the Thermoguard Timbercoat Door Upgrade System.
Thank you for your enquiry, in order for us to be able to advise, please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;
- Level of fire protection required (i.e. 30, 60, 90min, etc.)
- Each steel section dimension (i.e. 254x146x37 UB)
- Quantity and length of each section (or overall meterage for each section)

Alternatively you can just forward us drawings, fabrication/cutting lists and we'll extract the information from them but in that instance we'd need some guidance as to what to allow for i.e. all steels on first floor, etc.
For small, domestic projects we recommend all existing paint is removed apart from a suitable primer. After removal of existing coatings ensure all areas of steel are primed with a full coat of compatible primer and then apply the Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ 30min System for Steel.
We do a number of clear intumescent coatings for wood but we would require as much of the following information as possible to be able to provide a recommendation on which one to use.
- Size of surface area to paint
- Timber thickness
- Level of Fire Protection required (Class 1, Class 0, 30min, 60min, etc.)
- Type of timber (i.e. pine, mdf, plywood, etc.)
- Type of Timber surface (i.e. T&G, feather edge / shiplap cladding, solid panels / sheets, etc.)
- Internal or external
- Use (i.e. floor, wall cladding, ceiling, etc.)
- Clear or coloured coating required?
- Bare or previously coated?
It would depend on the product being used. The application temperature range should be stated on the products Technical Data Sheet.
We're not sure what the size of 125ml relates to, however Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ 30min System for Steel is a popular system we offer regularly for steel requiring 30 minutes fire protection.
If we are correct in assuming you are requiring a clear coating to apply over the emulsion to keep the look of what has been painted whilst upgrading the spread of flame rating, unfortuantely the clear coatings we offer would not be suitable for this. They are instead intended for bare timber or timber that has been previously stained or varnished.
Zeroflame Fire Retardant Paint wouldn't be suitable as it is only suitable for interior applications. If you can advise on the level of fire protection required we can recommend a suitable alternative.
The level of fire protection would need to be sought from your local authority to ensure compliance but we would assume as you have advised that the ceiling has 'fire-retardant boarding' that any requirement for separation/compartmentalisation had been achieved by this (i.e. 30min, 60min, etc.).
So assuming it is just a surface spread of flame concern for the outer facing plywood then we would suggest the exterior grade spec. of the Thermoguard Timbercoat BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System.
Thank you for your enquiry, in order for us to be able to advise the best product, please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;
Unfortunately we currently have no products we can offer for this application
Unfortuantely not, 60 minutes fire protection would be the maximum we could offer with a paint product.
Most intumescent paints for steel can be applied over a standard (well applied) red oxide primer, however to provide confirmation of compatibility we would need a data sheet for the red oxide used.
Also, in order to provide a recommendation for the correct intumescent paint and quantity to use, please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;
We currently only offer heat resistant paints in aluminium, black and white.
Assuming the steels are already primed with a compatible primer, are internal and are not hollow sections, Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ 30min System For Steel is a simple system to achieve 30mins fire protection.
Dependant upon the substrate you are looking to protect, the majority of our fire retardant products would be available in a minimum 1lt size but more information would be required - please email [email protected] with more information to enable us to provide further answers.
Assuming a UK Class 1/0 level of fire protection is required we can offer Thermoguard Fire Varnish BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System for a clear finish or Thermoguard Timbercoat BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System for a coloured finish.
Zeroflame Fire Retardant Treatment can achieve UK Class 1/0 on timber decking boards but must be applied to a bare porous timber so the existing varnish would need to be removed. Once the treatment is fully dry, it can then be overcoated with a water based coating of your choice. We have no products/systems suitable for application over an existing varnish finish currently.
Assuming the timber is a bare softowood or hardwood and a UK Class 1/0 level of fire protection is adequate we'd recommend Zeroflame Fire Retardant Treatment.
Envirograf 3-2-1- Special Fire Retardant Liquid would be suitable for application on artificial flowers and foliage
Please see the link to our blog post on painting the walls around a fireplace or multi fuel stove - here
Unfortunately we wouldn't have anything we could offer for this application currently.
Unfortunately we wouldn't have any products we could recommend for direct heat contact.
Thermoguard Timbercoat BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System can be applied over existing painted timber to achieve a Class 1/0 level of fire protection.
Assuming a UK Class 1/0 level of fire protection is required, Zeroflame Fire Retardant Treatment can be applied to bare softwood and hardwood timber - once dry, this can be overcoated with a water based stain of your choice.
If you are looking to paint the walls within a stairwell and a UK Class 1/0 level of fire protection is required, we'd recommend Thermoguard Wallcoat BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System.
Hydron Nu-Flame Synthetic & Fabric Protector can be applied to curtains to achieve BS 5867 Part2 Type B & BS 5852 0 & 1. Following purchase and application a certificate can be obtained.
Every individual steel section size would need a different loading to achieve the same level of fire protection. The number of sides exposed, the orientation and the environment would all have an impact on the product we would recommend and the loading requirements.
Unfortunately we currently have no fire retardant coatings suitable to receive any kind of traffic I'm afraid.
We currently have no products we could offer to fire resistance on glass.
Thank you for your enquiry, in order to enable us to provide a recommendation and price please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;

Assuming you require Class 0 level of fire protection, the timber is bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Zeroflame Fire Retardant Treatment.
For 20m² you would require 2 x 5ltr.
Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information.
Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information. Any competent person can apply these varnishes, after application you can apply for certification.
Unfortunately the maximum level of fire protection we could offer on OSB is class 0.
If your building control officer approves it for your application, the osb is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet Thermoguard Safewood Anti-Viral Fire Protection System could be used.

Unfortunately we currently do not offer any clear fire retardant coatings for metal.
Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information.
Zeroflame Fire Retardant Treatment can be applied to bare solid softwoods and hardwoods leaving the appearance of the timber virtually unchanged. It will achieve a UK Class 0 or Euro Class B providing the timber isn;t man made such as OSB or plywood.
Thank you for the enquiry, unfortunately there is not a clear intumescent paint for steel that we are aware of.
To remove Jotun Steelmaster 600WF you would have to abrade or blast it off.

Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information.
Intumescent paint systems can be applied to galvanised steel, but not cold rolled steel.
Unfortunately these angles will not be possible to protect.
Unfortunately we do not have a wood preserver treatment that is fire retardant, but we do have fire protection coatings that have a stained finish.
We have contacted you directly for more information.
Most steel fire protection coatings must be applied to a clean, dry, prepared substrate primed with a compatible primer.
Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information.
After application of a Bollom system you can apply for certification using the link here.

Unfortunately Thermoguard Thermocoat products are not suitable for application by HVLP, but they can be applied by brush or roller or commercial airless spray equipment.
If the steel has anything other than a compatible primer on, it must be stripped back to bare metal before application of a compatible primer then the Thermocoat system.
In this case you will need to apply Thermoguard Steel Fire Paint Primer once you have stripped the steel back to a bare, sound condition.
Assuming the primer on the steels is compatible, the steels are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet a Bollom Brosteel Ultra 60min System could be used.
These are sold in m² pack sizes and the topcoats can be mixed to many RAL and BS colours in a gloss, eggshell or matt finish.
We would recommend seeking approval from your building control officer prior to application.
Please complete the Bollom Steelwork Form, this can be found on the Bollom Brosteel Ultra 60 product page and e-mail this to [email protected] so that we offer the most suitable product.
You will need to submit and application for certification to Thermoguard.
This can be done following the link below.
No, BD 2569 asks for a material of limited combustibility.
This is any material which, when tested to the European Classification in accordance with BS EN 13501 Part 1,
achieves a minimum classification of A2-s3,’
Unfortunatley we do not have a product that can meet this level of fire protection.

Jotun Steelmaster 600WF is made by Jotun.
Jotun do not issue certificates after application of their intumescent coatings.
However, sometimes they calculate loadings based on a material list provided by the customer and generate a Client Schedule.
The applicator should provide any application records showing dry film thicknesses achieved on each section.
Based on both documents, the end customer should have confidence that the system was applied as per Jotun's schedules.
Client Schedules can also be generated by the applicator or dealer should they have access to the relevant loadings calculator in which case Jotun would not know the schedule for the specific project.
More information can be found on the Jotun Fire Certification Information page.
Please can you contact [email protected] with the information below so we can assist with a specification.

Unfortunately no.
Intumescents are not a suitable means of fire protection for the insulation criteria of REI.
The problem is that the insulation criteria requires a maximum temperature rise on the non-fire side of 140 degrees C and since thin film intumescent is designed to react to substrate temperatures of around 200 C then the system will fail, as the insulation maximum will be surpassed before the intumescent expands.
The steel will require to be protected by other means to achieve the insulation criteria.
