Application Instructions
For best results, ensure the surface to be varnished is clean, dry, sound, and free from wax, oil, or other contaminants. Follow these steps for optimal application:
- Surface Preparation: Sand bare wood to a smooth finish, and lightly sand previously varnished surfaces to provide a key. New concrete should be at least 30 days old and clean.
- Mixing: Stir the base component, then gradually add the activator and mix thoroughly. Do not mix part units.
- Application: Apply with a brush using light strokes following the grain of the wood, or use a short nap mohair roller. For best results, apply three coats on new wood/concrete (dilute the first coat with 10% water) and two coats on previously varnished surfaces.
- Drying Times: Touch dry in 2 hours, dry to handle in 8 hours, recoat in 4 hours, and fully cured in 3 days. Ensure adequate ventilation during application and drying.
- Cleaning: Clean spills with water and use GraffitiShield Cleaner to remove graffiti when the product is used as an anti-graffiti coating.
Restrictions and Limitations
Not suitable for use on plastic materials, imitation wood, or bare wood in outdoor situations. Avoid using on surfaces where the old paint is not UV-resistant. Do not store mixed product residue in a closed can. Always ensure proper ventilation during application.

Sam on 2024-09-06 17:47:49 | Question:
The description says polycoat is for indoors and outdoors, but the datasheet specifies not for wood outside. Will it protect UV sensitive surfaces outside? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Although this product will protect from UV, it isn't recommended for application to external wood, due to the moisture content of the substrate not permitted to exceed 4%.
Iain on 2024-09-02 12:24:02 | Question:
Hey, can i use this paint to cover a sign with acrylic background and oil based paint writing? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the previously painted surface areas are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, this product can be applied. We would recommend applying to a test area firstly, checking for compatibility and adhesion, prior to full application.
Steve on 2024-05-21 15:01:24 | Question:
Can I use this product on metal? I have a patina painted American pickup and would like to clear coat the bodywork to protect it. I just want to make sure I can use this with a roller? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Whilst this product is suitable for application to sound, existing coatings, it isn’t suitable for application to bare steel or rusted areas of metal. If applying to previous coatings, please check for compatibility and adhesion by applying to a small, test area firstly.
karen on 2022-11-25 10:43:16 | Question:
does the polycoat keep once mixed or do you have to use straight away ? i have read about not storing in the tin but can it be stored in another tub ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Once the two components have been mixed the pot life at 20°C is 3 hours. After this time the product is no longer usable.
Joseph Watson on 2022-11-16 14:21:18 | Question:
Can this be used on recently painted kitchen worktops? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This can be applied to previously painted substrates, we would recommend waiting till the previously applied paint has cured, prepared, then test for compatibility and adhesion on a small area prior to full application. The previously painted worktops must be clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet.
Joe S on 2022-09-22 13:01:54 | Question:
I want to use this as a sealant for a floor covered in Rustoleum Mathys Pegakote. I'm keen to reduce slip risk, should I/ can I add antislip additive to this or the pegakote? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product can be applied over Rust-Oleum Mathys Pegakote. If this is applied outside of the overcoating window of 7 days, the previously painted floor will need to be clean, dry, sound and sanded prior to application. This product has a thin film build so it would not normally be recommended to use an anti-slip additive with this product. A better option would be to apply further coats of Rust-Oleum Mathys Pegakote as this has a higher film build so will more securely anchor in the aggregate.
A Paterson on 2022-07-25 18:02:59 | Question:
Can this be used on decking which has been stained/painted |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
While this product can be applied on previously painted substrates, we cannot recommend it for this application to a decking.
Joanne on 2022-06-03 19:51:59 | Question:
I have painted my tiles with special floor/tile paint. Could I use this to seal it / add extra protection |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes this product can be applied to previously painted floors assuming the area is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet. We would recommend testing for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application.
Nick on 2022-04-23 17:50:16 | Question:
Can this product be used on previously varnished floors? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes this can be applied to previously varnished floors, we would recommend testing for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application on a small area. The previously varnished floor must be lightly sanded prior to application.
Cherry Austin on 2021-07-11 07:53:20 | Question:
Could this product be used to finish a kitchen worktop? Is it sufficiently abrasion resistant, and is it food safe? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately this is not food safe but it is very abrasion resistant, assuming the worktops are previously painted or a solid timber, they are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet this can be used. We would recommend testing for compatibility and adhesion on previously painted substrates.
joan Higham on 2021-05-27 08:55:30 | Question:

Hi I wanted to paint over my satin finish kitchen cabinets. Would this be suitable to change it from a satin finish to a gloss finish? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes Rust-Oleum 4900 Polycoat 2K could be used to provide a gloss finish, it will improve abrasion resistance, is easy to clean and will not yellow. Resists boiling water, alcohol, coffee, red wine, dilute acid and alkalis.
Michael Jones on 2020-05-19 13:50:24 | Question:
I’ve painted an Ikea unit which hold vinyl records with an acrylic water based paint. I want the strongest coating I’ll only be able to put one coat on because the pot life is 3 hours but you can’t recoat until 4 hours. Would one coat of this be better than a few coats of a polycyclic or 1k clear varnish such as Polyvine extreme. Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
You would only mix the quantity you need to use for one coat, the rest of the material remains unaffected until you need to mix more to apply your second or third coat, etc. Download the product data sheet from the 'Attachments' tab for details on mixing the product.
ben on 2019-11-03 23:15:02 | Question:
hi, on the description it say 20m2 per litre, is this correct? what is the viscosity of it? can I spray it? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The coverage rate is recommended as 13.5m²/l at 30 µm dry film build for horizontal surfaces and 20m²/l at 20 µm dry film build for vertical surfaces. The product is for Brush or Roller application only - not spray. You can download the product data sheet from the 'Attachments' tab on the product page for more details.
Graham Thurman on 2019-07-06 12:38:42 | Question:
Once mixed, what is the pot-life of the product please? I plan to test a spare floor board first, however do not want to reduce the efficacy of the product if waiting, say, 2 days after mixing for the actual floor coating. Same applies for the 2nd/3rd coats. Is it better to buy smaller quantities so that one mix is used for each coat? Many thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The pot life of the product is 3 hours and the drying time for the product to receive further coats is 4 hours.
stuart burleigh on 2019-06-05 10:12:50 | Question:
Is the Blackfriars heavy duty floor varnish better for a shop floor, or the Rustoleum 4900? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
These products are very similar, Blackfriar Heavy Duty Varnish comes in larger pack sizes, is available in Satin or Gloss finishes and is more suited to bare concrete or timber surfaces. Rust-Oleum 4900 Polycoat 2K comes in smaller pack sizes and is available in Matt or Gloss finishes and is able to be applied over more varieties of existing coatings.
Mary Stevenson on 2019-06-02 22:22:30 | Question:
I have just finished upcycled my kitchen. used a kitchen cupboard paint. when it was dried, it wasn't as glossy as I first thought, it was Satin Paint. Could I use this product to give a gloss finish? Would it also strengthen and protect the cupboards? Any and all advice welcome! I live in the UK |
Sam on 2019-01-02 15:32:07 | Question: In the instructions it says to dilute the first coat with 10% water... do you have to do this? Will it effect the result if you don’t? How much water would I need to use for a 2.5 l tin of varnish? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Diluting with 10% water is only recommended on the product data sheet for the first coat on new wood/concrete. If you needed the whole 2.5lt tin for the first coat on new wood/concrete, 10% dilution would mean you should add 250ml of clean, cold water.
Stephen george on 2017-07-27 08:03:00 | Question: Rust is coming through concrete render where the angle bead is. What can I coat it with to stop the rust coming through before I sandtex it ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Zinsser Cover Stain has been used in this situation to block the rust stains however there is no guarantee how long it will hold the stains back. As soon as any trace of moisture gets into the metal beading the rusting process will start again and stains are likely to bleed through once more. It would not be possible to say how long the primer would hold the staining back. The render surfaces must be completely dry before applying the primer. Applying 2 coats of the Cover Stain will give a little more protection and hold back the staining for longer than 1 coat. The Cover Stain can be overcoated with a standard masonry type coating. You could apply Zinsser AllCoat Exterior or Zinsser Perma-White Exterior over the Cover Stain primer. These products will reduce water ingress and hopefully prevent stains from reappearing for longer. Note that the only 100% effective way to solve the problem would be to remove the affected angle beading and replace with new stainless steel or plastic beading.
