Jotun Jotamastic 87 Alu Standard Paint
Jotun Jotamastic 87 Alu paint from the popular direct to metal paint brand, Jotun, is a two component polyamine cured epoxy mastic coating for steel. It is a surface tolerant, high solids, high build product that is aluminium pigmented for improved barrier effect. Specially designed for areas where optimum surface preparation is not possible or desired.
Jotun Jotamastic 87 Alu provides long lasting protection in environments with high corosivity. Can be used as primer, mid coat, finish coat or as single coat system in atmospheric and immersed environments. Suitable for properly prepared carbon steel and aged coating surfaces. It can be applied at sub zero surface temperatures.
Uses
- General: Primarily designed for maintenance and repair.
- Marine: Outside hulls, exterior and interior areas, including water balast tanks.
- Protective: Recommended for offshore environments, including splash zones, refineries, power plants, bridges, buildings, mining equipment and general structural steel.

I have a steel keel on my yacht (type unknown), but its become very rusty (type D) and I am looking at using your paint. If I was to use power tools, would I need to remove all the rust marks and secondly where the steel is pitted should I use your paint first and then fill (Please advise type of filler) or should I perhaps use a 2 pack epoxy primer as a filler. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: The way forward is to get the best possible surface preparation, removing most of the corrosion. More importantly we need a roughness so avoid polishing the steel if sanding/discing. Vital is to then to detergent wash (fairy liquid soapy solution) and rinse thoroughly with fresh water, high pressure if possible to remove contamination. We would then suggest (if application by brush) Jotamastic Smart Pack, minimum 3 coats, 4 is better. Apply 1 st coat direct to steel, allow to dry and then fill with an epoxy filler, allow to dry, sand and then continue with further coats. | |
