Case Studies
Café Royal
Central London's Cafe Royal re-opened as a luxury hotel during the summer of 2012 after major refurbishment. Its new marble-fitted bathrooms required a thin, water resistant floating screed to be applied to the insulation boards providing a base for the marble flooring. The screed needed to withstand the weight of the marble baths and other fixtures.
Ronafix Pre-packed Floating Screed 35mm+ was selected as a suitable screed to be laid above the underfloor heating system in all of the 159 Café Royal bathrooms.
Preparation
The insulation on which the Ronafix Pre-packed Floating Screed 35mm+ is being placed must be suitable for floating floor screeds and for the thickness of screed to be laid; increased board strength may be required to compensate for greater load transmission through a thinner screed.
Joints
Isolation joints should be installed around the perimeter of the floor, in doorways and around columns, manholes and other fixed elements.
Bay proportions should preferably be between 1:1 and 1.5:1 and should not exceed 2:1 length to width ratio, to limit uneven curing stresses.
Where separate heating zones occur within the same floor area, a joint must be positioned in the screed between the zones.
Mixing
Ronafix Pre-packed Floating Screed 35mm+ must be mixed by forced action mixer such as a Baron or CreteAngle mixer. Free fall mixers must not be used.
Mix for approximately 3 minutes. Once mixed the mortar should be used as quickly as possible.
Placing
As soon as the mortar is mixed, it should be placed onto the substrate, fully compacted, ruled and closed with a float or trowel.
Avoid overworking the surface, this will increase the tackiness of the mortar. The float should be regularly washed, to prevent build up of polymer/cement paste.
Screeds with an overall thickness greater than 50mm approximately, may be placed wet on wet in two layers of approximately equal thickness, to ensure good compaction.
To ensure satisfactory adhesion the lower layer should be raked to provide a key for the next layer.
Should an intermediate layer begin to harden, a priming coat must be applied before application of the next layer.
Curing
Curing must commence as soon as possible after finishing the screed.
Cure the screed with tight fitting polythene, applied as early as it is possible to do so without damaging the surface. Cover for 24 hours then remove and air cure.
Working Temperatures
Ronafix Pre-packed Floating Screed 35mm+ can be used in most weather conditions and in a wide temperature range, typically from +3°C to 25°C.
Traffic
Ronafix Pre-packed Floating Screed 35mm+ can receive foot traffic after 24-36 hours (typically at 20°C). This time will vary according to temperature, amount of liquid added during mixing, air circulation and general conditions.
Drying Times
Drying times are dependent on screed thickness, ambient conditions, mixing, air circulation, substrate conditions and other variables.
At 20°C & 60% humidity, Ronafix Pre-packed Floating Screed 35mm +will reach 75% RH after 10 days air curing at 50mm thickness. Measure RH with a hair hygrometer.
