Surface Preparation
- All surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and free from contaminants
- Concrete - power floated, granolithic and smooth surfaces should be roughened first to provide a good "key" for the paint
- This can be done mechanically by abrading or blasting, or chemically using Acid Etch
- These processes will have the advantage in addition to preparing the surface of also removing dirt and laitance
- New concrete must be allowed to cure thoroughly which can take up to 3 months
- Apply a 10% thinned coat of 301 Industrial Floor Paint to prime and seal the surface prior to applying Anti-slip Floor Paint
- Other surfaces must be prepared and primed with the suitable primer for that substrate
- Existing painted surfaces - Surfaces should be cleaned, degreased and sanded to ensure an adequate "key" is produced
- Remove all loose and flaking material and treat bare areas as new substrate and prepare accordingly
Mixing:
- Stir well before use
- Do not use a mechanical shaker
Priming:
- Suitable wood primer on wood, zinc phosphate metal primer on ferrous metals, 10% thinned 301 Industrial Floor Paint or Multi Surface Primer on concrete
Application
- As dictated by normal good painting practice
- In confined spaces, provide adequate ventilation during application and drying

Questions
Question about the product
Alan Parsons on 2023-06-28 20:39:21 | Question:
Is this product non flammable |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately no, this is a solvent based paint.
Andrew Milner on 2022-07-27 09:35:55 | Question:
I have a steel fire escape that requires anti-slip paint for the landings and treads as part of its ongoing maintenance. Due to the location of the fire escape we have found that the upper levels are exposed to direct sunlight most of the year which has warn away all the existing slip-resitant finishes over time. The lower levels are constantly in shade and, as such, are fairly damp. The existing slip-resistant finishes are now coming off in large sections and appear to have been permitted vegetation growth. Would this product be suitable for prolonged exposure to direct sunlight as well as being in a prolonged damp environment? In addition, what kind of life expectancy could be expected? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product is UV stable and is suitable for internal or external use. Assuming the staircase is clean, dry, sound and prepared correctly this could last many years on a fire escape, this will be determind though by the level of traffic and exposure. Any bare metal should be primed first with Coo-Var Water Based All Metals Primer
Jeet on 2021-05-29 12:47:10 | Question:
Hi - I'm looking for paint/treatment to protect the wood floor around an indoor hot tub as it would get wet with splashes. Would be helpful if it was also not too slipperly though I also plan to put non-slip mats on top in certain areas. Was looking at Teamac Metaclor Antifouling Primer followed by Teamac Chlorvar Chlorinated Rubber but didn't know if that would be overkill and/or slippery? Any suggestions? Thanks! |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the timber floor is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical data sheet we can recommend Smartkote Safekote. The first coat should be diluted 10% with 100 Rapid Drying Thinner. This is a barefoot friendly antislip paint available in a range of colours and a clear option.
Adrian on 2019-08-14 20:05:21 | Question:
How Mitch paint will I need to do a floor 40 m2 |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
5 litres would be sufficient to apply 1 coat to 40m² - so 2 x 5 litres to apply the required 2 coats plus any primer if required.
Lyn Manning on 2019-07-31 16:15:10 | Question:
Can I use this on galvanised steel fire escape stairs please |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, first prime bare galvanised steel after preparation as per the product data sheet with Coo-Var Water Based All Metals Primer.
Lee Beecham on 2019-04-04 20:12:31 | Question:
I am looking to use your light Grey 501 anti slip floor paint onto brand new self levelling latex, will this make it waterproof ? and does it need a primer or etch ? or would a thinned pre coat be fine ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Providing the self leveller you have used can be painted with solvent based coatings then you would apply a primer coat of 301 Industrial Floor Paint diluted 10% with white spirit followed by 2 coats of 501 Anti Slip Floor Paint. This will provide a durable anti slip finish but is not deemed waterproof
Andrew Crichton on 2019-03-05 09:00:48 | Question:
Aluminum painting Hi, I am interested in your anti slip paint, I am needing to coat some aluminium checker plate. If i etch prime then paint will that be suitable?? Regards Andy |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
To apply an anti-slip coating to aluminium we would usually suggest Smartkote Protectakote 2K Metal Primer followed by Smartkote Protectakote UVR.
Martin on 2019-01-20 09:29:35 | Question:
We are a scout district in north Norfolk and need to paint new woodwork on our mobile climbing tower ,with some sort of textured paint that will allow Shoes to grip to some extent what is best product to use please |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
501 Anti-Slip Floor Paint should be ideal for this application, on new wood we recommend Coo-Var Penetrating Wood Primer be applied first.
Carol norris on 2018-08-13 15:31:03 | Question:
Hi I have a sloping drive which becomes very slippery when wet. It appears to be a painted concrete surface. Would your 501 anti slip paint be suitable for this. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Potentially, but as we don't know what the drive is currently painted in you will have to carry out a test area prior to full application to ensure adhesion/compatibility. After cleaning and preparation as per the product data sheets, apply 1 coat of 301 Industrial Floor Paint thinned 10% with white spirit. Allow to dry overnight, then apply 2 coats of 501 Anti Slip Floor Paint allowing at least 16 hours between coats.
chris pickering on 2018-06-03 07:26:58 | Question:
Hello, Just finished my Narrowboat roof in the Blue 501 Anti Slip Floor Paint. Really happy with it, but would like to detail some areas on the boat in the same colour without the aggregate. Could you supply this? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, the nearest colour to our 501 Anti Slip Floor Paint in Blue is BS 18D43. This colour can be produced in something like Teamac Marine Gloss or Rust-Oleum CombiColor.
Jackie on 2018-03-30 18:30:16 | Question:

Dave on 2018-02-15 10:20:45 | Question:
Do you have a non slip paint suitable for an aluminium van ramp, used for wheeled flight cases? |

We would recommend Smartkote Protectakote UVR for this. Abrade to fresh metal, clean well using detergent. Prime with Smartkote Protectakote 2K Metal Primer as per instructions within 30 minutes. Then apply Smartkote Protectakote UVR as per instructions, you may also be interested in Smartkote Protectakote UVR Accelerator and Smartkote Protectakote Safety Grip to be used in conjunction with your application.
stuart wilmot on 2017-04-02 09:12:14 | Question:
I want to put a non slip path on my block paved driveway using 501 anti slip floor paint. I have jetwashed the area I want to paint. Can I paint direct to this cleaned surface OR is there other preparatory work I need to do first? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
After cleaning a priming coat of 301 Industrial Floor Paint thinned 10% with White Spirit should be used before application of 501 Anti Slip Floor Paint.
David Pontefract on 2017-03-08 17:42:11 | Question:
Can you tell me what primer do I need to order and is used on clean concrete when painting with 501 anti slip paint.
Regards
D Pontefract |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
On suitably prepared bare concrete a priming coat of 301 Industrial Floor Paint thinned 10% with White Spirits should be used before application of 501 Anti Slip Floor Paint.
Dave Robson on 2017-02-17 08:25:51 | Question:
Is there a primer needed on bare timber boards before applying the 501 anti slip floor paint |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes - 407 Multi Surface Primer.
Scott on 2017-02-08 13:10:34 | Question:
Is Anti slip paint 501 suitable for an external meta staircase and can it be applied over a previous coat of anti slip paint? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
It is suitable for use on external metal staircases. Any bare metal areas should be prepared and primed with a suitable primer. Existing paint should be well adhered, clean and abraded to provide a key if necessary before application of 501 Anti Slip Floor Paint directly to the surface.
Steve on 2016-10-19 17:31:35 | Question:
Hi,
I am looking for a paint adhere to an aluminium truck bed for driving vehicles onto . Is your 501 antislip paint suitable?
Thank you
Steve |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would recommend priming the aluminium with 707 MMA Metal Primer and finishing with 703 MMA Flexible Anti-Slip Coating.
phu on 2016-09-20 09:54:56 | Question:
hi can you let me know is it ok to mop over this paint with out it coming off.
thanks
phu |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Mopping this product certainly won't remove it as it is a durable coating that can also be used externally but it does have a very rough texture to the finished surface which will make it nearly impossible to mop. If you require an anti-slip coating you can clean for internal areas, we would recommend 503 Easy Clean Anti Slip Coating.
