New concrete, masonry, and other related surfaces must cure for at least 30 days before priming. For effective mould and mildew removal, use appropriate fungicidal wash products. Treat timber at risk from decay or insect attack with suitable preservatives.
Use Zinsser B-I-N Primer-Sealer to spot-prime knots and sap streaks. Zinsser Cover Stain is ideal for priming new or unpainted cedar, redwood, or other resinous timbers.
Application Instructions
- Shake or stir well before use.
- Apply with synthetic bristle brush, roller, or sprayer (use a .017” tip and 2000-2500 PSI for airless spraying).

Questions
Question about the product
Ron J on 2024-05-18 16:39:39 | Question:
Hiya. Is Zinsser Allcoat gloss suitable for fibreglass garage door? Also, the present finish is old and a bit unstable, would I need to treat it before painting with some kind of stabilising fluid? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the garage door is clean, dry, sound, lightly abraded and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, and any flaking or peeling material removed, this product can be applied direct to a fibreglass garage door.
Colin Dolbear on 2023-07-26 14:03:51 | Question:
I need to paint my Composite front door which is Rosewood in colour with a grain finish. Will I loose the grain finish if I use this paint. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Thanks for your enquiry. This product will follow the contours of the substrate being a thin build paint, so any texture should remain once painted. Due to the paint being one colour any highlights/lowlights of the grain effect would be lost.
Andrew tucker on 2023-06-07 18:14:47 | Question:
Hi, does allcoat require an undercoat on pre painted and bare wood surfaces. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
For application to bare timber we would recommend to prime first with Zinsser Cover Stain. Zinsser Allcoat Exterior can be applied to most previously painted areas directly assuming they are clean, dry, sound and sanded to provide a key prior to application. We would recommend to test on a small area prior to full application for compatibility and adhesion.
Lisa on 2023-04-10 22:25:28 | Question:
can I paint polycarbonate ? I want to clad a plinth, so the paint wont be exposed to the elements, but will it stick ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product will adhere to many plastics such as polycarbonate, we would recommend the area to be painted is cleaned, degreased and lightly sanded prior to application. Testing on a small area prior to full application for compatibility and adhesion would be wise.
Spike Mcnulty on 2023-01-22 17:21:40 | Question:
Can this be used on kitchen unit doors as needs to be a gloss finish Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the kitchen cupboard doors are a laminate, they are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we would recommend they are first primed with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 prior to application.
Lynn on 2022-05-12 12:17:39 | Question:
I have seen that you have said that it is not suitable for floors . Would these include concrete patio slabs? Last October I used anthracite grey on a few concrete stepping stones and it looks far better than another branded masonry paint and now want to give my patio a revamp. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately this paint or other masonry paints should not be used on a floor. Assuming the concrete slabs have a damp proof membrane, the previously applied paint is removed, the area is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Coo-Var Acrylic Floor Paint. This is available in many RAL, NCS or BS colours in a semi-gloss finish.
Gary on 2021-11-28 05:44:43 | Question:
Would AllCoat exterior gloss be suitable for painting exterior garden pots, both plastic and glazed ceramic? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes this product could be used assuming they are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet. We would recommend priming first with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3, also testing for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application.
Alison on 2021-09-11 18:32:30 | Question:
I painted my narrowboat cabin sides in Owatrol oil gloss paint, but don't like the colour - would this be suitable for painting over it? And if so, would I have to sand first? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, assuming the previously painted areas above the waterline are clean, dry, sound, prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet, a test for compatibility and adhesion is undertaken we can recommend Teamac Marine Gloss. The previously applied coating should be fully cured and sanded prior to application.
Rupert on 2021-06-22 15:10:25 | Question:
I am looking to paint my fibreglass campervan roof, would this be the best product for that for a gloss finish? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately we cannot recommend this product for use on a roof. We have contacted you directly for more information.
Hameed on 2021-05-18 21:55:55 | Question:
I am looking to use Zinsser Allcoat on my Upvc front door. Is Allcoat Exteriro suitable to pant the internal and external face of the front door? I read somewhere you must not use exterior paints indoors |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, assuming the door is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet this paint can be applied to the internal and external faces of a UPVC door.
Mike Best on 2021-04-25 12:58:13 | Question:
Hi, I have some steel garden chairs and an aluminium garden table. Can I use the same paint for all of these? Thank you! |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Both surfaces would either need to be previously painted or primed with Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 prior to application of Zinsser Allcoat Exterior.
M Harrowven on 2021-03-21 16:56:25 | Question:
Is all coat exterior gloss (water based), in conjunction with zinsser cover stain, suitable to paint new tanalised sawn timber cladding or would a non tanalised timber cladding be preferable. Many thanks Mike |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the timber is bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data Sheet, Zinsser Cover Stain followed by Zinsser Allcoat Exterior would be suitable for application to tanalised or standard timber.
John Simpson on 2020-11-15 15:00:27 | Question:
I want to paint interior UPVC windows in my bathroom, that are mahogany to a white gloss, is this paint suitable or can you recommend a paint that would be please! I want to use a brush for application. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the UPVC windows are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data sheet then yes we would recommend Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Waterbased for this application.
Laura on 2019-06-30 19:43:22 | Question:
Hello, I'm looking to paint my front door with the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Gloss, can I purchase any paint samples first? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately the manufacturer does not provide samples of this product but if it colours you wish to choose if you provide us with a postal address we can send you a RAL colour chart to be able to see the RAL colours available at least in the product.
John on 2019-04-18 10:03:15 | Question:
Would this be suitable to use on my wooden sash windows and their stone cill, or would the cill need a base coat of some kind. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Gloss (Water Based) can be applied directly to a stone sill be it bare or previously painted. When applying on to timber, the surface should be primed with Zinsser Cover Stain initially before applying a minimum of 2 coats of Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Gloss (Water Based).
John connor on 2018-10-11 17:09:56 | Question:
I want to decorate a hall, stairs and landing . The finish has to be white gloss i don't want to use oil as it goes yellow after a few months. Would this product be suitable as there are quite a few panel doors to paint. Is it easy to keep the edge going I've found other water-based glosses don t look good on large painted areas. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes you can use Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Gloss (Water Based) for an interior application and it will give a non-yellowing finish. To paint doors we would recommend using a 4” short pile roller, it is much easier to keep a wet edge and will be quicker to cover a large area. You could also use one of the Zinsser primers to prime the door first if you wish, Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 or Zinsser B-I-N would both be suitable.
Samantha Gorman on 2018-03-26 18:39:18 | Question:
Hi can i use the Black gloss all exterior paint on my composite door. If yes do i need to undercoat first? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Gloss (Water Based) can be applied directly to uPVC with no primer required. We would advise abrading the surfaces with a fine grade of sandpaper followed by a solvent wipe using methylated spirits. Then apply 2 coats of the AllCoat Exterior Gloss (Water Based) in your chosen colour.
Dave on 2016-03-14 13:27:32 | Question:
What would I use to thin Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Gloss for spraying? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser do not recommend this product is thinned at all for application by Brush, Roller or Spray. They recommend application by Airless Spray only, as this will allow the product to be applied without thinning. The product is water based so for clean up, you can clean application tools, spatters and spills immediately with warm water and liquid detergent; rinse with water. Follow equipment manufacturer’s directions to clean spray equipment. Remove dried product with a household cleaner; rinse with water.
Joy Durkin on 2015-05-24 12:00:54 | Question:
Regarding Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Gloss I failed to open the datasheet for some reason. When I clicked on the datasheet button, there appears to be two. One listed as MSDS and the other listed as TDS so are there two products available? What is the cleanup on this/these product/s? Is a primer/undercoat recommended? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Every product has a Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Gloss is a water based product so clean up can be carried out with just water and for most surfaces no primer is required but for full details see information in the TDS.
