Please note: Timber must be clean and thoroughly dry prior to application (maximum 18% moisture content). Any gaps should be sealed with Thermoguard Intumescent Mastic. Fire should be prevented from accessing unprotected wood surfaces and for external applications it is recommended wood has been sealed on the reverse face (plus any other uncoated/vulnerable areas) to stop water ingress.

NOT suitable for the topside of floor surfaces that will be trafficked/walked on.

To achieve 30 and 60 minute protection minimum timber thicknesses apply of which approval must be sought before purchase.

For BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B s2 d0 ONLY see Thermoguard Fire Varnish BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System

A gloss finish is available in batch quantities for large projects, contact us for details.

IMPORTANT - The below information from the manufacturer must be read and referred to your relevant authority for approval BEFORE purchase and use.

In line with good common practice, we recommend that approval be sought for the use of our system, outlining our justification for the issuing of the Fire Certificate prior to the product’s use.

Authorities generally accept our Fire Test evidence (copies available upon request) as justification for the provision of One Hour Fire Resistance in cases such as this for up to 1 Hour Fire Resistance, depending upon the thickness of board in question.

We have an indicative 30min Fire Test at a UKAS Fire Test Laboratory demonstrated 10mm loss to charring on plywood & MDF.

Our Fire Varnish BS EN Class B Test indicates that softwood did not burn significantly for the 20mins test duration and our previous Class O Part 6 Fire Propagation test indicates that protected softwood did not burn within the 10 minutes test duration.

Further in-house testing indicated that when applied at three times the Class B & Class O specification Fire Varnish intumescent added a total of 20 minutes Fire Resistance.

We assess projects requiring 30 or 60mins Fire Resistance on an individual basis, referring to the TRADA Char Rate Tables and calculated residual timber to ascertain whether we could issue a Fire Certificate for the project. A written specification should be obtained from the Technical Department for your project prior to use to ensure this system will be suitable.

In order to enable us to issue a 30 minutes Fire Certificate in the case of softwood the surface must be able to afford the loss of 10mm depth from all surfaces exposed to a fire. For 60 minutes we assess based on 25mm loss during the fire.

For oak or similar woods the loss to take into account is 7mm for 30mins and 18mm for 60mins.

In other words, the residual timber should be adequate to in the case of:

  1. Underside of a floor to support the anticipated weight load on the floor.
  2. A timber ceiling under-drawing a floor and joists can be treated as sacrificial but should have protected the area above to 30mins
  3. A timber wall should still be able to support itself without the fire passing through to the area the other side.

Timber must be clean and thoroughly dry prior to application (maximum 18% moisture content).

Important Application Notes

The Thermoguard Fire Varnish System should only be applied to clean, dry wood (maximum 18% moisture content), with dry conditions during application and drying of basecoat and overcoat.

Thermoguard Fire Varnish Basecoat is a water-based 2 pack coating.

Mixing ratio for Fire Varnish Basecoat is 3 Parts Base to 2 Parts Activator by volume.

Thermoguard Fire Varnish Overcoat (Interior or Exterior grade) should not be applied unless the basecoat is dry. Drying time of the basecoat in good conditions is overnight. Once the basecoat has dried in good conditions the basecoat remains ideal to overcoat for a further 4 days. Thereafter, the basecoat becomes gradually harder, until it reaches a point where the overcoat may not obtain a good bond.

Thermoguard therefore recommend overcoating when basecoat is dry, within the following 4 days in good conditions.

Delamination of overcoat caused by application to near-full cured basecoat has NEVER occurred when the overcoat was applied within 7 days. The longer the delay beyond '4 days after basecoat has dried' (so typically 5 days after application), the greater the risk of overcoat delaminating.

If overcoating is delayed notably beyond 7 days after the basecoat was dry, it is advised;

  • Basecoat is abraded to obtain a key with 120 grit abrasive
  • Apply a light coat of basecoat to replaced material removed during abrasion
  • Apply overcoat within the ideal window or as near to it as possible

Application to OSB/Sterling Board

Only surface spread of flame protection can be provided to OSB, for BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B s2 d0 ONLY see Thermoguard Fire Varnish BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System for details.

questions Brad on 2021-12-20 19:45:31
Question:

Hi I'm looking to apply to existing Oak / Pine doors in a Victorian property doors are 130 years old so do not want to replace with fire doors. This is allowable by building control if i can present a 30 min fire certificate for the varnish used. The area is basically 12m2 across 4 doors. 2 of the doors have the top panels as glass which is now changed to fire glass. Looking for confirmation it meets the 30min when applied to Victorian doors and would also like advise on the quantities required to achieve 30 protection and certification. Any query please advise. Regards Brad

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

This system is not for the purpose of upgrading doors, for this application assuming the doors meet the minimum requirements and building control approval is sought we can recommend the Thermoguard Fire Varnish Door Upgrade System.

Please send the information below to [email protected] and we can assist with a specification.

- Level of Fire Protection required? (i.e. 30min, 60min, etc.)
- Style of door? (i.e. panelled, ledge & brace, etc.)
- Solid or hollow core? - (please note we cannot provide anything to upgrade hollow doors)
- Door size? (height and width)
- Door thickness? (include thickness at thinnest point (i.e. panel))
- Number of doors to do?
- Clear or coloured finish required?
- Bare or previously painted?

questions Nigel on 2019-10-01 10:17:10
Question:

can this be used on Sikkens Filter 7 Plus – Ebony

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Please see below the manufacturers recommendations (at the time of writing this response) when using the Thermoguard Fire Retardant Varnish system over existing wood stains.

Recommended;

Penetrating Wood Dyes / Spirit Stains based on low flash solvents (eg Xylene, Toluene, Alcohols). Benefits are – Quick drying, do not seal wood.

Acceptable;

Penetrating Wood Dyes based on Water (not water repellent). Precaution - wait for all water to come out of wood before overcoating.

Usable with Caution;

Nitrostain, White Spirit Penetrating stains (single coat of matt only). Precautions - Allow to dry thoroughly (up to 2 weeks for white spirit) Degrease with warm detergent solution necessary with some sanding required if a solid film has been formed.

Not Recommended;

Stains containing Water Repellents, Waxes, Oils, Coal Tar Distillates / by-products, satin or gloss woodstains or other stains which seal the wood or stains that deposit a weak film of underbound pigment. “Home recipes” combining stains and lacquers. N.B. Consult the Technical Department if these have been applied already or if in doubt.

Compatible Pre-Existing Coatings;

Long oil Varnish, Yacht Varnish or Polyurethane Varnish - Require thorough sanding to give a “key”, Non water-repellent organic solvent preservative (provided thoroughly dry). For others please consult the Technical Department.

Incompatible Surfaces;

Photographic faced hardboard, CCA “Tanalised” or water-repellent grade preservative treated timber. Emulsion paint, old “1st generation” type clear fire coatings*.

*If these may be present, contact Technical Department for specific advice, tests etc.

Paint;

Paint should be overcoated with a suitable Thermoguard Timbercoat system in chosen colour. Paints cannot be successfully coated with a clear fire varnish because adequate abrasion of hard or smooth paint damages the colour, while softer emulsions & acrylics cause the varnish to craze or shrivel.

questions Peter Scott on 2019-06-26 18:16:35
Question:

I don't understand how one product can be 30 and 60 minutes. Does 60 need more coats?

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

The number of coats and product system is the same however projects are assessed on an individual basis, referring to the TRADA Char Rate Tables and calculated residual timber to ascertain whether a Fire Certificate can be issued for the project.

To ascertain whether your timber can achieve 30 or 60min protection please contact our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2) or [email protected]provide us with as much of the following information as possible;

  • Size of surface area to paint
  • Timber thickness
  • Level of Fire Protection required (Class 1, Class 0, 30min, 60min, etc.)
  • Type of timber (i.e. pine, mdf, plywood, etc.)

questions Dave Molyneux on 2018-12-13 16:52:19
Question:

Can this product (external) be over painted with a shed/fence type wood stain at a later date and still retain it's fire protection? Many thanks Dave.

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

No. Something like Zeroflame Fire Retardant Treatment can be overcoated with waterborne stains or varnishes as long as they are compatible, non-flammable and will dry. We always recommend to try a small sample area first to ensure the stain does not react with the Zeroflame Fire Retardant Treatment and will dry out. However this only achieves Euroclass B (BS Class 0) Fire Propagation and Spread of Flame fire protection and has to be applied to bare (not man-made) timber only.
