Teamac Marine Primer Undercoat
Teamac Marine Primer Undercoat is a high-quality undercoat for anyone looking to achieve a professional finish on boats and other marine surfaces. The product is oil-based, ensuring deep penetration and strong adhesion to various substrates. Its formulation is specifically designed to work in tandem with marine gloss finishes, reducing the risk of topcoat sinkage and preserving the glossy appearance for longer.
Application and Uses
This undercoat can be applied directly to wood, metal, and GRP surfaces, making it versatile for different marine projects. Before application, ensure that surfaces are clean, dry, and free from contaminants. Wood surfaces should be sanded to create a good 'key' for the primer, while metal and GRP surfaces should be properly abraded to ensure optimal adhesion.
Use this undercoat as a foundation coating or when a colour change is required, especially when transitioning between light and dark colours. It can be applied using a brush, roller, or airless spray, depending on the area and surface texture.
Important Considerations
- Do not apply in conditions of high humidity or low temperatures as these can affect the drying and performance of the undercoat.
- Avoid using on surfaces that are constantly submerged in water or exposed to continuous heavy moisture.
- Ensure adequate ventilation in confined spaces during application and drying times.
- Always follow the drying times indicated on the technical data sheet, with a minimum of 12 hours or overnight drying recommended.
Recommendations
For the best results, it is recommended to pair this undercoat with the matching Teamac Marine Gloss, which is formulated to work perfectly as a topcoat over this primer. This combination will provide a durable and visually appealing finish that withstands the harsh marine environment.
Always refer to the downloadable data sheet for more information on application techniques, surface preparation, and compatibility with other products.

Questions
Question about the product
Steve Tibbetts on 2023-01-11 17:59:10 | Question:
Hello, I am planning on applying (by roller) your marine primer undercoat soon to my GRP / Paint boat. I will have abraded cleaned etc the surface. I am likely to be applying the primer undercoat at around 9 degree C; with a plan to overcoat with two coats of marine gloss up to 5 weeks later at temperatures over 12 degrees C. Boat is outdoors. Do you see any flaws with this plan? Regards Steve, North Wales |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product is dry to recoat or over paint in 12 hours or overnight at 20°C and fully cured in 3 to 5 days. With the boat being left outdoors it would be better to apply the marine undercoat 12 to 24 hours prior to application of the Teamac Marine Gloss rather than leaving it exposed to weather. Also if the marine undercoat is full cured it will require sanding prior to application of a paint.
philip on 2021-08-22 12:21:01 | Question:
I am going to repaint my narrowboat. I have some rust spots which I am going to use Teamac Rust Converter. Can I just use Teamac Marine Undercoat or should I use Teamac red oxide first then undercoat then top coats? Many thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the painting is to be done above the waterline we'd recommend applying Teamac Red Oxide over any bare metal areas or areas treated with Rust Converter. The whole surface (above the waterline) should then be undercoated with Teamac Marine Undercoat and finally 2 coats of Teamac Marine Gloss should be applied.
lee on 2018-01-29 12:33:25 | Question:
Is Teamac Marine Gloss OK for salt water & is the Teamac Marine Undercoat fine under the water line? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Teamac Marine Gloss and Undercoat have good resistance to salt water but should not be used for constant immersion below the waterline. They are suitable for boats that are generally berthed on land. Below the waterline, for boats in the water most of the time our recommendation is Teamac Metaclor Underwater CR Primer and Teamac Chlorvar Chlorinated Rubber Paint, both of which have excellent water resistance.
