Preparation
Clear all areas of moss, lichen and debris by brushing or power washing and remove surface water and any contamination such as Oil or Grease and allow to dry. Apply Britannia Fungicidal Wash to prevent further fungal/algal growth.
Most roofing substrates to be treated will not normally require priming.
Highly porous/friable surfaces:
- These Surfaces must be jet washed prior to applying the Britannia Aquashield Primer
- Concrete, Concrete and Asbestos Cladding, Sheeting and Guttering should be primed with Britannia Aquashield Primer (see separate technical sheet) prior to over coating with Britannia Aquashield Waterproof Roof Coating
- Fibrous cement corrugated sheeting: two coats of Aquashield Primer must always be applied to this substrate
Metal Surfaces:
Including:
- Ferrous-New, Weathered and previously painted galvanised iron and steel
- Non-Ferrous Metals - Aluminium sheeting and Aluminium Alloy Box gutters and previously painted non-Ferrous Metals
All these areas should be suitably prepared and primed as appropriate (see separate technical sheet) before application of Britannia Aquashield Waterproof Roof Coating.
Non-porous substrates:
- Slate, Polished bricks should be power washed abraded and completely dry, free from any contamination to achieve adhesion of the Britannia Aquashield Waterproof Roof Coating
Bitumen surfaces:
- Discolouration may occur over a new asphalt, tar or bitumen surfaces; therefore an extra coat may be required, for decorative purposes only. Aged bitumen can be liable to crack, therefore further advice must be taken
Previously painted or coated substrates:
- It is good practice to inspect and carry out adhesion tests on any existing coating or substrate prior to application of the coating
Splits, cracks, joints and seals, crazed areas:
- Pay particular attention to clean out any splits/cracks/joints and seals by scraping or brushing off with a stiff bristle brush before applying the Britannia Aquashield Primer. Repair all faults in the surface by using a proprietary filler
Surface faults:
- Repair all faults in the surface with either Britannia Reinforcing Scrim in the first of two coats or using a proprietary filler
In areas where excessive movement may occur, additional reinforcement must be incorporated into the coating.
Application
- To the dry and cleaned surface, apply a generous coat of Britannia Aquashield Waterproof Roof Coating by brush or squeegee
- Please follow the Coverage rates shown in Spreading Rate Section
- Apply between 5°C - 25°C
- As dictated by normal good painting practice. In confined spaces, provide adequate ventilation during the application and drying
Cleaning
- For all cleaning use White Spirit

Questions
Question about the product
Lorraine Leslie on 2024-07-07 12:25:04 | Question:
Hi, is this product suitable for covering an asbestos garage roof - they are corrugated sheets and are splitting. Thank you. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product would not be the best option, assuming the asbestos roof sheets are bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet you could consider Britannia Durashield. The prepared roof must be primed with two coats of Britannia Durashield FD Primer. Followed by a reinforced system of 2 coats of Britannia Durashield with the Britannia Reinforcing Scrim incorporated in the first coat. However, we would recommend seeking approval from a local authority before carrying out any work involving asbestos prior to any application.
Ewan on 2024-04-02 16:26:05 | Question:
Is this product suitable for repainting a park home profiled metal composite roof which faces Southwest and has suffered solar damage leading to peeling of original finish? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes you could use this product, however it is designed as a maintenance and repair product and not as flexible finish. Assuming you have a clean, dry, and sound roof that is prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, Britannia Durashield would be a better alternative. This product is a flexible and durable paint to provide a longer lasting seamless coating with up to a ten year life expectancy from one coat. Ferrous metals should be Primed firstly with Britannia Zinc Phosphate Metal Primer, if Aluminium or Galvanised metal then a Primer coat of Britannia One Pack Etch Primer should be applied firstly.
Mike Kelly on 2021-12-10 14:04:54 | Question:
Is this product suitable to cover a felt covered garage roof ? If not could you please recommend a product that is suitable and an amount to cover that same roof , area 10M square . Thank you, mick |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product is suitable for application to a clean, dry, sound and prepared felt roof. The coverage rate for this product is approximately 1kg per m² you would require approximately 10kg.
