These will vary depending on substrate, the site conditions and longevity required.
Typically spreading rates will vary depending on the end use.
- Standard Coat - Approximately 1 kg per square metre dependent on substrate
- High Build Coat - Between 1 kg – 2 kg per square metre dependent on substrate
Drying Times
- Up to 6-7 days depending on temperature, thickness of coating
- The product may remain slightly soft for a further period depending on climatic conditions, this is not detrimental to the waterproofing qualities of the product
Preparation
Dirt build up, moss and loose material should be removed by scraping or brushing. In cold conditions any ice present on the surface must be removed.
- Most roofing substrates to be treated will not normally require priming
- Application Temperature should be between 5°C-25°C
Highly Porous/Friable Surfaces:
- Concrete, Concrete and Asbestos Cladding, Sheeting and Guttering should be primed with Britannia Aquashield Primer (see separate technical sheet) prior to over coating with Britannia Aquashield Smooth Waterproof Roof Coating
- These Surfaces must be jet washed prior to applying the Britannia Aquashield Primer
- Fibrous cement, corrugated cladding, sheeting and guttering: other than repairs, we recommend the use of Durashield for this application
Metal Surfaces:
- Ferrous-new, weathered and previously painted galvanised iron and steel
- All these areas should be suitably prepared and primed as appropriate (see separate technical sheet) before application of Britannia Aquashield Smooth Waterproof Roof Coating
Non-Porous Substrates:
- Slate, Polished bricks should be power washed abraded and completely dry, free from any contamination to achieve adhesion of the Britannia Aquashield Smooth Waterproof Roof Coating
Bitumen Surfaces:
- Discolouration may occur over a new asphalt, tar or bitumen surface; therefore an extra coat may be required, for decorative purposes only
- Aged bitumen can be liable to crack, therefore further advice must be taken
Previously Painted Or Coated Substrates:
- It is good practice to inspect and carry out adhesion tests on any existing coating or substrate prior to application of the coating
Splits, Cracks, Joints and Seals, Crazed Areas:
- Pay particular attention to clean out any splits/cracks/joints and seals by scraping or brushing off with a stiff bristle brush before applying the Britannia Aquashield Primer
- Repair all faults in the surface by either Britannia’s Reinforcing Scrim in the first of two coats or using a proprietary sealer
Surface Faults:
- Repair all faults in the surface with either Britannia’s Reinforcing Scrim in the first of two coats or using a proprietary filler
In areas where excessive movement may occur, additional reinforcement must be incorporated into the coating.
Application
- To the dry and cleaned surface, apply a generous coat of Britannia Aquashield Smooth Waterproof Roof Coating by brush, roller or squeegee, at the minimum specified spreading rate as stated above under the heading
- Please follow the coverage rates shown in Spreading Rate Section
- Application Temperature should be between 5°C-25°C

Questions
Question about the product
Jon on 2023-06-20 15:52:01 | Question:
Is this a suitable coating for a felt flat roof? It has previously had an aluminium solar reflective paint applied but this is starting to flake off in areas so looking for something a bit more hardwearing. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product can be applied to a felt roof assuming it is clean, dry and sound. If it has been previously painted we would recommend to test on a small area for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application.
Paul Ingram on 2023-04-13 11:39:50 | Question:
Is Aquashield smooth solvent based material suitable for repairing leaks to Sanafil plastic roof sheeting, including suspect gaps around upstands/flashings etc? What size cans are available, from where and what is the approx coverage? Thank you. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately no, this product is not suitable to be applied to a single ply membrane roof. GacoPro Roof Coating can be applied to most single ply membranes, we would recommend to test on a small area for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application. Please note this is not designed to fill gaps around upstands or flashings, this should be address prior to application with Gaco Liquid Roof Tape
Thomas on 2023-03-01 15:14:21 | Question:
Can this paint be used to cover Fleece Butyl tape.On a asbestos garage roof. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately no, for this application assuming the asbestos roof is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Britannia Durashield FD Primer followed by Britannia Durashield. This is suitable for application to asbestos and will be compatible with the fleece butyl tape.
Louise O'Donnell on 2020-04-11 08:42:30 | Question:

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, this product would not be suitable for this application.
richard on 2020-03-31 11:35:55 | Question:
hi what is the coverage? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The coverage is 1-2kg per m² dependant on the substrate. This information can be found on the Technical Data Sheet in the Attachment tab on the product link below.
Peter on 2019-12-12 17:47:35 | Question:
Following up on a question by Maurice on 22/10/2019, I also wish to use Aquasheild Smooth on Onduline Bitumous roofing sheets, but as these sheets are red I will use the Clear Aquashield product. You recommend using Aquashield Primer first, but is this also clear? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The primer is white so unfortunately a clear option to try an retain the look of the current red colour will not be possible.
Ron Bottomley on 2019-11-09 14:33:34 | Question:
could this help seal between a outside brick wall and concrete patio area? Thank you |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Its not clear what is required here but it may be more suited to something like Bullet Mega Mastic.
Terry Groves on 2019-10-23 14:27:51 | Question:
Can I seal a canvas caravan roof with this. I wish to make the seal permanent even if it gives a different finish and look. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Britannia Aquashield Smooth would not be suitable for this application.
Maurice jenkins on 2019-10-22 11:47:32 | Question:
Can this be used on old ondulin |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming you are referring to bituminous corrugated roofing sheets then yes, Britannia Aquashield Smooth would be suitable for application to this type of surface however we would recommend first priming with Britannia Aquashield Primer. We would NOT recommend application of the Aquashield system to Onduline PVC clear sheets however. Depending on the current condition of the roof in question and what you wish to achieve it may be advisable to discuss your project with our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2).
Michael Tyers on 2019-09-10 15:15:35 | Question:

No. | |
graham bishop on 2019-08-27 10:47:59 | Question:

No, Britannia Aquashield Smooth cannot be used for this application. To discuss alternatives please contact our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2).
tony tyler on 2019-08-23 11:13:06 | Question:
does this product set hard or semi malleable? I am trying to find a product to seal a 1960s fibre glass egg chair, |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Britannia Aquashield Smooth is not suitable to be applied to furniture, for this we would instead recommend Rust-Oleum 3333 Super Adhesion Primer followed by Rust-O-Thane 9200 Handy Pack.
Matt Taylor on 2019-07-12 13:37:37 | Question:
Hi, could this product be used on a plastered wall in a wetroom? It's to the side of the tiled area so it's not submerged just getting splashed when the shower is used. Regards Matt Taylor |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No this would not be suitable for this application. If it is just occassional splashes of water, something like Zinsser Perma-White Interior would be more suited.
