Features & Benefits
- Rejuvenating topcoat over aged bituminous roofing materials and metal corrugated sheets
- Solar and weather protective coating for bituminous roofing systems
- Can be applied by brush or roller (solvent resistant)
- The silver finish offers excellent sunlight reflectivity
- Improves the service life as compared to black bituminous roof systems prone to UV degradation
Spreading Rate
- Bituminous surfaces: Up to 8 m2 /Litre
- Non-Porous surfaces (e.g Steel): Up to 10m2 /Litre
- Coverage rates depend on porosity of the surface
- Apply 2 Coats
Drying Time
- Between 2-4 hours depending on the temperature and ambient conditions
- A touch test on the 1st coat will indicate readiness for the 2nd Coat.
Water Repellency
Rainfall immediately after application has no adverse effect
Shelf Life
Up to 2 years if stored correctly in an unopened container. Store out of direct sunlight at temperatures between 8°C and 25°C.
Preparation and Application
- Stir well before use with a paddle stirrer on low speed as product can settle with time to establish a homogenous product, if using the product over a few hours it is recommended you stir occasionally throughout
- Do not thin
- Should the Solarshield require thinning, it is recommended to thin 5% by volume of white spirit initially and evaluate the resulting viscosity. The Solarshield should not need to be thinned if recommended storage conditions have been maintained.
Clear all areas of moss, lichen and debris by brushing or power washing and remove surface water and any contamination such as Oil or Grease and allow to dry. Apply Britannia Fungicidal Wash to prevent further fungal/algal growth.
Holes, cracks etc., must be repaired or filled prior to application.
Most roofing substrates to be treated will not normally require priming.
To the dry and cleaned surface apply Britannia Solarshield by brush or roller (solvent resistant) avoid pouring directly onto a horizontal surface. This may cause puddling during application and increase drying time.
Application Temperature should be between 5°C-25°C.
Substrate Types
Highly porous/friable surfaces
If Possible thin by 5% on the 1st coat then apply an unthinned coat of Solarshield, when dry apply the second coat at right angles to the first but it is not essential to do so.
Metal Surfaces
- Ferrous-New, Weathered and previously painted galvanised iron and steel.
- Non-Ferrous Metals - Aluminium sheeting & Aluminium Alloy Box gutters and previously painted non-Ferrous Metals.
For long term protection these areas should be suitably prepared and primed as appropriate (see appropriate technical sheets) before application of Britannia Solarshield.
Non-porous substrates
Slate, Polished bricks should be power washed abraded and completely dry, free from any contamination to achieve adhesion of the Britannia Solarshield.
New Bitumen surfaces
If applying to a newly applied solvent based bituminous surface, then allow for a minimum of 3 days weathering BEFORE application of Solarshield.
New Water Based Protective Coating
If applying to a newly applied water based protective coating then allow for a minimum 14 days weathering BEFORE application of Solarshield.
Previously painted or coated substrates
IT IS GOOD PRACTICE TO INSPECT AND CARRY OUT ADHESION TESTS ON ANY EXISTING COATING OR SUBSTRATE PRIOR TO APPLICATION OF THE COATING.
Splits, Cracks, Joints and Seals
Pay particular attention to clean out any splits/cracks/joints and seals by scraping or brushing off with a stiff bristle brush before applying a Bitumen Primer.
Repair all faults in the surface by using a proprietary filler.
Crazed areas
These should be primed with a bitumen pimer prior to the application of a coat of Britannia Solarshield.
In areas where excessive movement may occur additional reinforcement must be incorporated into the coating.
Important
Britannia Solarshield is not recommended for the treatment of wooden surfaces, tanking, fishponds or internal use.
Air conditioning vents should be sealed for a minimum of 24 hours during and after the application.
Cleaning
For cleaning equipment use white spirit immediately after use.

Questions
Question about the product
neil smith on 2021-05-06 08:50:27 | Question:
Can this product be used on a GRP flat roof to prevent expansion in direct sun light? The roof in new and around 25 square meters. Many thanks Neil Smith |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the GRP roof is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet, Britannia Solarshield can be used as a solar reflective coating. For two coats of 25m² you will require approximately 10ltr.
Peter on 2019-07-25 13:02:35 | Question:
Hi there.... Can i use this product on an EPDM (rubber) roof? thanls |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, we would instead recommend Britannia Durashield FD Primer followed by Britannia Durashield in Solar Reflective White. An adhesion/pull off test is recommended when applying this system to EPDM - please see full details in the Britannia Durashield FD Primer data sheet available to download from the 'Attachments' tab on the product page.
Mark Hanlon on 2019-04-25 13:17:52 | Question:
Can you use on asphalt |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, however discolouration may occur over a new asphalt, tar or bitumen surfaces; therefore an extra coat may be required, for decorative purposes only.
