Coo-Var Acid Etch
A single-component acid etching solution, specifically formulated to prepare concrete surfaces by effectively removing laitance, salts, and other surface contaminants. It is an essential step before painting to ensure that paint adheres properly, especially on power floated concrete floors and other exceptionally smooth surfaces where traditional mechanical preparation methods are impractical. The product is a thin, clear liquid and is easy to apply with a brush, mop, or sponge pad. It reacts with the surface, creating bubbles as it neutralises the surface, which can then be rinsed away with water.
Application and Use
This acid etch solution is recommended for use on new concrete surfaces and other smooth surfaces where blasting or mechanical abrasion cannot be employed. Before application, it is crucial to clear and sweep the area to remove any debris, ensuring the surface is free of oil, grease, or other contaminants. Mixing one part of the solution with three parts water is recommended, though further applications may be necessary depending on the etching or cleaning required. The product should be used before applying a top coat to ensure the paint adheres properly.
Important Considerations
Do not use this product on surfaces not intended for acid etching, as it may cause damage. Additionally, avoid contact with skin and eyes, and do not breathe in vapours. Proper personal protective equipment, including gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection, must be worn during application. After use, the surface should be thoroughly rinsed with water and allowed to dry completely before any painting is attempted.
Recommended Products
For best results, consider using the Coo-Var Universal Degreaser or Coo-Var Oil Remover as a preceding coat to remove any oil or grease. After the surface has been etched and rinsed, applying a suitable Coo-Var top coat will ensure a durable and long-lasting finish. Always refer to the downloadable data sheet for detailed application instructions and safety precautions.
