Protecta FR Pipe Collars, part of the Protecta Firestopping range, are designed to maintain the fire resistance of fire rated walls and floors for up to 240 minutes where these are breached by service penetrations, and may be used in drywalls, masonry or concrete walls and floors around plastic pipes, composite pipes, metal pipes and cable bundles.
Simple to install, using widely available standard fixings, each intumescent collar consists of a white or red coated circular steel shell that splits in two to fit around the service penetrations by means of a simple ’slide-lock’ system. The steel shell of the fire collars contains a graphite-based reactive material which reacts when exposed to heat from fire, expanding to close openings left by the softening combustible material to prevent the spread of smoke and fire through fire-rated floors and walls.
By preventing the spread of smoke and fire, lives can be saved and damage to property kept to a minimum, helping aid evacuation of personnel and giving time for emergency services to arrive and tackle the blaze. Intumescent pipe collars are just a part of fire-stopping compartmentalisation, keeping fires contained in an area for a specified time and preventing them from breaching walls and floors, spreading through service holes to block emergency exits and weaken a structure.

Minimum separations and limitations: Services can be sealed as specified in the detailed drawings. Services within the Protecta FR Collar systems do not require a minimum separation, and only requires sufficient space or separation to securely fit the collars onto the substrate. For larger apertures other than described in these installation instructions, Protecta FR Board or EX Mortar with FR Pipe Wrap should be used.
Supporting constructions: Flexible walls must have a minimum thickness of 75mm and comprise steel studs or timber studs* ) lined on both faces with minimum 1 layer of 12.5mm thick boards.
Timber walls must have a minimum thickness of 100mm and comprise solid wood or cross-laminated timber.
Rigid walls must have a minimum thickness of 75mm and comprise concrete, aerated concrete or masonry, with a minimum density of 650 kg/m³.
Rigid floors must have a minimum thickness of 150mm (except composite floors) and comprise aerated concrete or concrete with a minimum density of 650 kg/m³.
Timber floors must have a minimum thickness of 150mm and comprise solid wood or cross-laminated timber. The supporting construction must be classified in accordance with EN 13501-2 for the required fire resistance period.
***Timber studs: no part of the penetration seal may be closer than 100 mm to a stud, and minimum 100 mm of insulation of class A1 or A2 according to EN 13501-1 must be provided within the cavity between the penetration seal and the stud. In linear seals, there is no minimum distance and insulation required.
Installation
- For fire sealing service penetrations, installation must be in accordance to the detailed drawings on pages 2 to 47.
- Where PVC pipes are mentioned, this includes PVC-C and PVC-U.
- Where PE pipes are mentioned, this includes PE-LD, PE-MD, PE-HD, PE-X and similar according to EN 1519-1, EN 12201-2 or EN 12666-1.
- Where PP pipes are mentioned, this includes PP-MV, PP-H, PP-R and similar if the pipe is according to EN 1451-1 or DIN 8077/8078.
- Before fitting the collar ensure that any gaps between the service penetrations and the separating element are sealed. If Protecta® FR Acrylic is required, ensure that the surface of all service penetrations and surrounding construction is free from all loose contaminants, dust and grease.
- Choose collars which have the closest diameter to the aperture size (and not necessary the diameter of the services), and make sure the collars are installed wholly against the surface of the construction, and not against any seal surrounding the services. On site where the aperture size is greater than the service diameter, and/or services is at an angle, an oversized collar can be used. If not specified in the detailed drawings, in general, any gaps between a service penetration and a construction should not exceed 55mm width.
- Place a collar around the service penetrations and ensure that the collar shell and fixing lugs are positioned tightly to the surface of the wall, or the floor, so that the anchors/fixings can be inserted fully. Where the surface is uneven, apply a sealing bead of Protecta ® FR Acrylic between the wall/floor and the collar shell.
- Attach the collar with steel screws, anchors or bolts that are suitable for the substrate that the collar will be fitted to. These are described in the detailed drawings. For drywalls use drywall or wood screws with a length suitable for the number of boards that form the wall. For concrete or masonry walls and floors, use minimum 40mm long masonry screws or expansion bolts.
Sound Insulation
Description | Sound reduction |
---|---|
Collars installed as described in walls | Rw 58 dB |
The sound insulation value is only valid for the collar/pipe and not for other elements in the building construction.
The sound insulation has been tested by the accredited laboratory Exova BM Trada in Great Britain according to EN ISO 10140-2. Test report is available upon request.
Pipe End Configurations
When testing pipes, one can choose not to cap (or close) the pipe, or cap the pipe inside the furnace, or outside the furnace, or on both sides. The configuration chosen depends on the intended application of the pipe and/or the installation environment.
The code defining if a pipe is capped is stated after the fire classification. For instance EI 60 C/U which means the pipe was capped inside the furnace, and uncapped outside the furnace. The test configuration defines the approvals possible.
Our engineering judgment based on EN 1366-3:2009 are:
Intended use of pipe | Pipe end condition (4) | |
---|---|---|
Rainwater pipe, plastic | At drainage | U/U (1) |
Not at drainage | C/C (2) | |
Drainage or sewage pipe, plastic | Ventilated drain | U/U (1) |
Unventilated drain | U/C (1) | |
Drain w/water trap | U/C (1) | |
Not at drainage | C/C (2) | |
Pipe in closed circuit (water, gas, air, electricity etc.) | C/C (2) (3) | |
Flue gas recovery system pipe, plastic | U/C (1) | |
Pipe with open ends and ≥ 50cm length on both sides, plastic | U/U (2) | |
Pipe supported by suspension system, metal | Fire rated support | C/U (1) |
Non fire rated | U/C (1) | |
Waste disposal shaft pipe, metal | U/C (1) |
Notes:
- Stated in EN 1366-3:2009
- Polyseam’s judgment based on tests
- Metal pipes should have fire rated support
- U/U classified fire seals cover C/U, U/C and C/C. C/U classified fire seals cover U/C and C/C. U/C classified fire seals cover C/C
