Questions
Question about the product
Henry on 2024-10-08 21:12:50 | Question:
Hi, looking at the gold Ardenbrite Metallic Paint to cover a radiator that is already painted gold but looking a bit tired. Would I need the water or solvent based paint and would I need any primer and / or protective glaze? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the radiator is water-filled, it is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, you could consider the Water-Based option over previously painted surfaces. We'd recommend applying to a small test area firstly to check for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application. Touch dry within 1 hour and Hard Dry after 4 hours in temperatures of 20C, with a minimum 1 hour overcoat window between coats. Ardenbrite Protective Glaze can then be applied to dried coatings to increase durability and prevent wear and tear occuring, and is Touch dry within 1 hour and Hard Dry after 4 hours in temperatures of 20C, with a minimum 1 hour overcoat window and maximum 7 days interval between coats. During application and curing, the radiator can be turned on to a minimum of 10C and a maximum of 30C, this will aid with drying and curing times. Ensure the maximum temperature once cured doesn't exceed 60-70C.

Helen on 2022-05-31 19:38:14 | Question:
Would this product be suitable to paint a brushed chrome frame on a backlit bathroom mirror. Everything else is polished brass and the mirror was supposed to be too! |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the brushed chrome frame is metal, it is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet this could be used. Blackfriar Multi Surface Primer should be applied followed by 1 coat of Ardenbrite Quick Drying Base Coat prior to application.

Chase Celliers on 2019-04-12 12:20:43 | Question:
Hi, I would like to paint my (previously painted) wooden skirting gold, please advise on suitability and whether to use the water or solvent based. Thanks |

Rachel on 2019-02-27 16:51:50 | Question:
Hi, Can I used ardenbrite on a varnished surface or will it require sanding first? Many thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The product data sheet advises; Ensure all surfaces are dry, clean sound and free from any surface contamination such as dirt, oil, rust, grease etc. Internal Non Porous Substrates: eg. previously painted, ceramic etc. apply 1 coat of Ardenbrite Quick Drying Base Coat (Note: if existing coating is hard/glossy then abrade before application).
Anne Detain on 2019-02-22 23:53:38 | Question:
Hi I have a decorative tile strip in my bathroom I’d like to paint over - would this paint be suitable please? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, but the water based version would be more suitable - clean tiles to remove any soap residues, apply 1 coat Ardenbrite Quick Drying Base Coat followed by 2 coats of Ardenbrite Metallic Paint (Water Based). Additional protection can be provided with a couple of coats of Blackfriar Quick Drying Varnish. Note: These products could not be used on the walls within a shower area.
Shirley on 2019-01-03 15:34:30 | Question:
Would the paint be suitable to paint on metal candle holders, which will then be placed on tables? Many thanks. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Ardenbrite Metallic Paint (Solvent Based) should be fine for this application. If the holders will be handled frequently you may want to put a coat of Ardenbrite Protective Glaze on just to protect the metallic paint from finger marks.

NMM on 2018-03-05 13:32:17 | Question:
Can I use this paint for the feature wall in my living room. Currently we have got Dulux paint. Do i need any undercoat? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes Ardenbrite Metallic Paint (Solvent Based) can be used as a feature wall paint. We would recommend using the Ardenbrite Quick Drying Base Coat to prime the wall first then apply 2 coats of Ardenbrite Metallic Paint (Solvent Based). Spray application will give the best appearance for the coating. You could also apply a coat of Ardenbrite Protective Glaze to protect against tarnishing from finger marks, liquid splashes, etc.
Tony cummings on 2017-05-06 07:54:43 | Question:
Would Sovereign No 8 gold paint be suitable for painting sandblasted lettering on a slate gravestone?
Would it need any priming?
Do you have any photos you could send me of this being done?
Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Ardenbrite Metallic Paint (Solvent Based) is a complex system for exterior use, you have to use the Ardenbrite Quick Drying Base Coat and also apply 2 coats of the Ardenbrite Protective Glaze. Using the Ardenbrite Metallic Paint (Water Based) will make it simpler, cheaper and will last longer than the solvent system. For the water based Ardenbrite, apply 1 coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 to the clean prepared surface followed by 2 coats of Ardenbrite Metallic Paint (Water Based), no Ardenbrite Protective Glaze required. 2 colour options in the water based are Light Gold No.1, and Antique Gold No.9. The Light Gold is closest to Sovereign Gold No.8.
