Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint is an attractive, tough, durable and high opacity floor coating. Contains special aggregates for outstanding slip resistance. Useful for areas where safety is paramount, either internally or externally.
Preparation
Ensure the surface to be painted is sound, clean, dry and free from grease or any substance liable to give adhesion problems. Scrape off any old or flaking paint until you have a firm surface. Special attention should be given to areas under cars to ensure all oil, grease, dirt and road salt is removed. New concrete must be left for at least 6 months before applying Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint.
Application
Stir thoroughly before use. Apply with a brush or roller working the paint in any surface imperfections. On bare or new surfaces first apply Blackfriar Professional Solvent Based Floor Sealer followed by 1-2 coats of Blackfriar Professional Anti- Slip Floor Paint. On previously painted surfaces apply 1-2 coats as required. Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint is not suitable for use over PVC, thermoplastic tiles, quarry tiles, asphalt floors or granolithic concrete.
Do not apply it on concrete surfaces treated with alkali containing liquids, areas subjected to rising damp or areas treated with PVA bonding solutions. If concrete floors are very smooth then pre-treat with Blackfriar Professional Acid Etch followed by Blackfriar Professional Solvent Based Floor Sealer prior to applying 1- 2 coats of Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint.
Surfaces are slippery when wet. To ensure slip resistance the floor must be kept dry when in use. The use of protective mats will help preserve the surface under tyres.
Clean Up
Remove as much product from application equipment as possible before washing with Blackfriar Brush Cleaner or White Spirits. Do not empty into drains or watercourses. Some local authorities have special facilities for the disposal of waste coatings.

Questions
Question about the product
Phil on 2024-10-17 08:19:47 | Question:
I need a non slip paint for an external steel drain cover that is slippery whe; wet it is outside the front door so gets a fair bit of walking on. Can you advise best paint for this |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the steel is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, this product could be applied direct to steel. 2 coats are recommended, to achieve the desired outcome. Blackfriar has reservations on the suitability of this product for this application. An alternative we can offer with more confidence , assuming it's for foot traffic only, would be to prime with Coo-Var Zinc Phosphate Primer, this will provide anti-corrosive protection, prior to 2 coats of Coo-Var Suregrip Anti-Slip Floor Paint to leave a slip-resistant finish.
Leon on 2024-10-01 13:29:20 | Question:
Would this be ok to paint old fashioned looking kitchen floor tiles |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product isn't recommended for use on tiles. Assuming the tiles are glazed, bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet you could consider Smartkote Protectakote Clear Primer Treatment, followed by 2 coats of Smartkote Safekote. This provides an anti-slip finish, that is barefoot friendly and easy to clean, and is available in a range of colours with a semi-gloss finish.
G Crawford on 2024-03-16 11:38:03 | Question:
Will this paint adhere to old stone steps? How should the stone be prepared? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately this product is not suitable, please can you provide more information and a picture of the steps so we know what the stone is to [email protected].
Jess on 2023-08-08 20:55:25 | Question:
Is this product suitable for tiles (floor of a wet room) |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product isn't recommended for use in a wet room or on tiles. Assuming the tiles are glazed, bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we would recommend Smartkote Protectakote Clear Primer Treatment, followed by 2 coats of Smartkote Safekote. This provides a bare foot friendly anti-slip coating, this is available in a range of colours with a semi-gloss finish.
Bob on 2023-01-23 18:34:18 | Question:
Would this product be suitable to paint a stainless steel fridge floor and if so, what primer/preparation would you suggest? Many thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Thank you for the enquiry, we will need some additional information to assist with a recommendation for suitable paint for this application. Please can you provide the information below to [email protected] Environment - interior or exterior
kerry on 2022-07-25 14:06:09 | Question:
Is this suitable for exterior concrete stairs? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product can be used internally or externally onto a clean, dry, sound and prepared concrete. If the concrete is smooth and non porous we would recommend pre treating the concrete with Blackfriar Professional Acid Etch followed by Blackfriar Professional Solvent Based Floor Sealer. Then applying 1- 2 coats of Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint.
Caroline on 2022-01-01 19:37:44 | Question:
Is this paint suitable for metal - a steel access hatch? How should it be prepared? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes this is suitable for use on a steel hatch assuming the bare steel hatch is only subject to light foot traffic, it is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet. The bare steel hatch should be primed first with Blackfriar Red Oxide Metal Primer prior to application.
Caroline on 2022-01-01 19:36:50 | Question:

Ciaran on 2021-07-27 23:42:52 | Question:
What is the best way to use this paint on newly sanded floorboards? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would recommend sanding back to bare wood the first coat may be thinned with white spirit 10% to act as a sealer coat. Then apply 2 full coats unthinned. Please note the anti slip aggregate will make it harder to clean the floor if using a cloth or sponge, a scrubbing brush would be required.
John on 2021-05-22 10:21:38 | Question:
Hi I’ve just put down a self leveller over my worn external pathway ; will Blackfriars anti slip external paint do the job . Can I also paint over some external block work with it many thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Asssuming the screed applied is overpaintable, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical data sheet this could be used once the screed is primed with Blackfriar Professional Floor Sealer.
David Pattenden on 2020-07-06 11:03:28 | Question:
I am wanting to use this paint on a newly screeded floor to an external garden toilet and wet room used for washing down our labrador after muddy walks. the floor screed falls to a centre drain grille so will not lay in water. Is this paint suitable and do I need to use a primer of any sort first? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the newly screed floor is fully cured, clean, dry and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data Sheet we can recommend Smartkote Safekote for this application due to it being easier to keep clean.
Mark Raybould on 2020-06-27 23:15:16 | Question:
It says in the description "Surfaces are slippery when wet. To ensure slip resistance the floor must be kept dry when in use." I want to paint the concreate pathway leading up to my house which will get wet when it rains. Will it become slippery then? If so can you recommend a more suitable alternative. Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the concrete pathway is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data sheet this product is suitable for this application. The antislip paint would only become slippy if water can pool on the surface.
J Lawton on 2019-08-30 15:41:01 | Question:
Can you tell me what area 1litre of this would cover (I'm painting edges of concrete outdoor steps for someone with visual impairmaent) |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Coverage should be 6-10m² per litre/per coat.
Jay on 2019-06-18 00:47:50 | Question:

Neil on 2019-06-08 07:37:56 | Question:
Will this product need a primer if used on galvanised metal steps. The steps have previously been painted but most of it has worn off. Thanks. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint would not be usually recommended for this type of application, instead we would recommend Smartkote Protectakote UVR. Please refer to the details on this product in the data sheet and product description which explain what is required when applying over existing paints and/or bare galvanised metal.
Brian on 2019-04-15 16:57:29 | Question:
What would happen if I didn't let new concrete age for over 6 months before applying this paint? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The paint would likely fail to adhere which would result in flaking, peeling, etc.
Brian Eyley on 2019-02-22 07:02:10 | Question:
Would this product be suitable for use on new marine plywood which is to be used as a floor in a Rotary Club float (Christmas Santa's Sleigh). It will be used for up to 14 evenings per year which are sure to include heavy rain but will normally be kept under cover. As a charity, safety, longevity and cost are all important. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint is suitable for use on wood. On bare wood the first coat may be thinned with white spirit 10% to act as a sealer coat. Then apply 2 full coats unthinned.
Nathan on 2019-01-28 13:52:33 | Question:
Hi We have a wet room and we have the non slip Lino. Will this paint be appropriate for this project? How many layers do you suggest? Thanks Nath |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint would not be suitable for bare feet and cannot be used on linoleum. Smartkote Safekote is suitable for bare feet and other customers have used this successfully on similar floor surfaces, however it is not strictly recommended for use on linoleum by the manufacturer so you would have to carry out your own trials to ascertain suitability.
ken watt on 2019-01-24 18:39:24 | Question:
Hi, can you recommend a product I can use to paint my concrete patio. It is an area approximately 15m2 exposed to the weather and has previously been painted. The patio has been thoroughly cleaned. Regards Ken |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint would be a suitable product to use if you want an anti-slip finish to the area, for 15m² you would require between 3-5 litres to apply the 2 coats recommended.
Carly on 2019-01-21 19:00:18 | Question:
Can this be used on laminate kitchen floor tile or on wooden floorboards in bathroom |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would not recommend Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint for either of these areas, it is not suitable for laminate flooring and although it is suitable for wooden surfaces the finish would be too aggressive for bare feet in a bathroom environment. We would instead recommend considering Smartkote Safekote, this has a fine texture provided by small silica particles which will not hurt bare feet. Although not recommended by the manufacturer we have had customers also have success with it on certain laminate flooring surfaces so we would suggest a trial on this area first to ensure it meets your requirements.
Alison on 2019-01-15 16:05:23 | Question:
Can you use this on bathroom tiled floors? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, assuming they are glazed tiles we would instead recommend Smartkote Protectakote Clear Primer Treatment followed by Smartkote Safekote.
Maxine lloyd on 2018-12-12 08:18:19 | Question:
Can i use this on smooth floor tiles |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, assuming they are glazed tiles we would instead recommend Smartkote Protectakote Clear Primer Treatment followed by Smartkote Safekote.
C Moore on 2018-12-05 16:48:39 | Question:
Can this product be used on black ceramic floor tiles if so how much for a large living room |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Peter Mawer on 2018-09-19 09:35:55 | Question:
I have a hardwood doorstep, that I would like to paint grey. Would this product be good to use? I will sand step down to bare wood. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint will be fine for this. If you are sanding back to bare wood the first coat may be thinned with white spirit 10% to act as a sealer coat. Then apply 2 full coats unthinned. Note: The anti slip aggregate will make it harder to clean the step if using a cloth or sponge, a scrubbing brush would be required.
Neil Storey on 2018-08-02 08:27:42 | Question:
Can I use your paint on a patterned concrete drive. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
In general patterned concrete driveways are usually finished with a shiny/sealed surface which prevents good adhesion of subsequent paints. If this is not the case or you are able to prepare the surface to provide a suitable key for paints to adhere to then we would instead recommend considering Rust-Oleum Tarmacoat or Coo-Var Tennis Court & Drive Paint after adhesion tests.
Gary Wilson on 2018-07-27 16:37:59 | Question:
Can you use this on quarry tiles? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Quarry tiles are difficult to get paint to adhere to, we would not recommend Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint for this surface.
Michelle on 2018-07-03 20:37:17 | Question:
Hi, I have a concrete floor with old paint. I need to paint a commercial kitchen floor (anti slip). do i need to remove the old paint or just paint on top? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Ideally you would always remove any existing coatings and apply something like 503 Easy Clean Anti Slip Coating or 502 HD Anti Slip Coating to a suitably prepared concrete floor. However there are instances where existing coatings can be over painted as long as they are well adhered, compatible and thoroughly cleaned and abraded to provide a key for the next product to be applied to. Always start with a small trial area when overcoating to check for compatibility, adhesion, etc.
Heather on 2018-06-07 12:09:54 | Question:
Can this be used outside for back door steps? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Provided the steps are wood or concrete, (i.e. not tiled or anything else) then yes it will be suitable. Usual preparation should be carried our prior to painting, i.e. clean, dry, loose flaking paint removed, mould treated etc.
Thomas Bennett on 2018-05-07 21:09:51 | Question:
I drive a Renault Kangoo adapted to accept a power chair with an access ramp at the back of the vehicle. My chair is equipped with solid tyres and sometimes they slip when contacting the metal plate at the bottom of the ramp. Would your Blackfriars paint overcome this problem? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
To create an anti-slip surface on metal we would instead recommend Smartkote Protectakote UVR. The metal surface should first be prepared and primed with the appropriate primer (as per manufacturers instructions), see Smarkote Protectakote UVR Product Data Sheet for more details.
Donald Brannan on 2018-04-29 10:01:22 | Question:
Good morning, I have an area of decking approx. 6m x4m, and I am looking at the best anti slip solution for this. I have looked at the screw down strips you sell, and they do seem ideal. However, I am on a restricted budget, and wonder what type/cost of paint you could offer. The area does get quite damp and slippy due to its location in the garden, and previous decking oil/paints have not lasted. Thanks in advance Donald. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We recommend Smartkote Safekote for timber decking.
Sarah on 2018-03-29 23:52:43 | Question:
Can this paint be used over interior tiles that are now exterior? (they were interior as in a conservatory but now exposed as conservatory knocked down and pergola erected instead) |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We wouldn't advise the use of Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint on tiles but Smartkote Safekote can be applied to glazed tiles after the application of Smartkote Protectakote Clear Primer Treatment, see product information and data sheets for full details.
Jon on 2018-03-21 10:29:19 | Question:
Would this be suitable for application over previously painted steel stair treads? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, on previously painted surfaces, after preparation apply 1-2 coats as required.
Tracy Russ on 2018-02-24 08:33:35 | Question:
Would this be suitable for concrete stairs case from a first floor flat? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
New concrete must be left for at least 6 months before applying Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint. On bare or new surfaces first apply Blackfriar Professional Solvent Based Floor Sealer followed by 1-2 coats of Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint. On previously painted surfaces apply 1-2 coats as required. Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint is not suitable for use over granolithic concrete.
Sarah on 2018-01-27 11:11:26 | Question:
Is this ideal for motorbikes to go over. I'm looking to put this on the entrance to my garage which is sloped and slippy. It is paving slabs which gets slippy when wet and therefore the bike tyres slip. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint should be OK for this type of situation. For best performance the surface preparation will need to be thorough, no grease or dirt present. Substrate must also be completely dry when paint is applied. (It may be better to wait for better weather before tackling the job). Thin the first coat to act as a sealer, add approx. 10% white spirit for the sealer coat. Then apply 2 full coats. The paint coating will take up to a week to fully harden, you will need to take care during this time not to damage the coating. When it starts to show signs of wear another coat can be applied.
D Britton on 2017-04-12 16:12:55 | Question:
Is Blackfriars anti slip paint suitable for external concrete |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes it is. Please see the TDS (Technical Data Sheet) available to download from the 'DATASHEETS' tab on the product page for full information on preparation and application.
Brenda Snoswell on 2017-03-08 14:01:36 | Question:
Will the anti slip paint be OK to paint over ceramic tiles on our outside step. Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint will not be suitable for this application. A suitable system would be to prime the tiles with 3333 Super Adhesive Primer Handy Pack followed by Rust-O-Thane 9200 Handy Pack with Rust-Oleum Non-Skid Additive NS 200 incorporated to produce an anti-slip finish.
Robert Rutledge on 2016-07-22 08:42:03 | Question:
Is this product suitable for a small engineering workshop where the equipment uses neat oil as coolant and therefore many splashes, what preparation is required to the floor that has previously been painted with Watco paint which doesn't stand up? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint may not last too long if any oil contamination is allowed to sit on the surface for any length of time. Oil spillages must be wiped up promptly to avoid the paint softening. A stronger paint would be the Blackfriar Professional High Traffic Floor Paint and to broadcast 504 Standard Anti Slip Aggregate into the first coat to give the anti slip properties. Then apply a second coat to seal in the aggregate. To prepare the floor remove all failing coatings back to a clean sound surface. Remove any oil contamination using the Blackfriar Professional Degreaser & Cleaner. If there is still a sound paint coating present either product, (Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint or Blackfriar Professional High Traffic Floor Paint), should be OK to go straight over the previous coating. Note In some instances the High Traffic Floor Paint can react with recently applied single pack floor paints. If the old paint coating is not in great condition then a complete diamond disc grind to remove all paint would be best preparation. You would then need to prime the bare surface with the relevant primer depending on which top coat you are using (Blackfriar Professional Floor Sealer for Blackfriar Professional Anti-Slip Floor Paint and Blackfriar Professional Epoxy Floor Primer for Blackfriar Professional High Traffic Floor Paint. The paint system must be allowed to cure for 5 days minimum from the application of the last coat before subjecting the coating to any oil contamination.
