Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Peganox - Protective Coating for Metal
Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Peganox is a highly effective, water-based elastic coating designed for long-lasting protection of various metal surfaces. Its 200% elasticity prevents cracking and peeling, even when metal substrates expand or contract. This product provides superior corrosion protection and waterproofing, ensuring that surfaces remain intact and visually appealing over time.
Application Uses
Peganox is specifically formulated for use on:
- Metal roofs and cladding
- Structural steel work
- Caravan and mobile-home roofs
- Pipelines, railings, and containers
- Non-ferrous metals, aluminium, copper, zinc, and lead
Its versatility makes it suitable for various industrial and professional applications, ensuring maximum protection in harsh environments, such as coastal areas.
Key Features
- Corrosion Protection: Peganox forms a flexible, anti-rust membrane that is impermeable to water, providing up to 15 years of corrosion resistance.
- Waterproofing: The coating ensures surfaces remain waterproof, protecting against moisture and weathering.
- Smooth Finish: It offers a smooth, satin finish that enhances the appearance of metal surfaces.
- Elasticity: The 200% elastic coat adapts to the expansion and contraction of metal, preventing cracks and peels.
- Application: Optimized for brush or roller application, with excellent flow properties.
- Primer and Topcoat: Functions as both, simplifying the process and reducing costs.
Application Instructions
For optimal results, surfaces should be prepared by derusting through sand blasting or high-pressure water cleaning. Peganox can be applied using brushes, rollers, or airless spray systems. For airless spray, dilute with up to 3% water and use a nozzle size of 11-13 at a pressure of 220 bars.
Restrictions and Limitations
Peganox should not be used on surfaces that will be exposed to extreme mechanical stress or where it is continuously submerged in water. It is also not intended for consumer use and is restricted to professional or industrial applications. Always ensure adequate ventilation during indoor use.
Recommended Products
Consider using Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Tape for edge laps when applying Peganox to roofs and cladding for added durability and protection.

Questions
Question about the product
Brian Perry on 2024-09-19 16:44:21 | Question:
Is this product suitable for a GRP roof please? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately no, this is for metal substrates. Please provide more information and pictures of the roof to [email protected] so we can assist with a recommendation.
Dom on 2024-05-05 19:13:28 | Question:
Hi Can Rust-Oleum Peganox be applied over previosly painted railings once the preperation is done ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the metal railings are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical datsheet, this product can be applied to previously applied coatings. We would recommend to test on a small area for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application.
Andrew Dickson on 2023-12-04 22:04:48 | Question:
Hi, I’ve got 4meters of cut edge corrosion along the end edge of my steel garage roof. I was originally going to purchase Rust-Oleum Noxyde Pegarust however I was wondering if I could use Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Peganox instead. Mainly as I can buy a smaller quantity of peganox and paint it on using a brush, it’s also cheaper. If I could use peganox would I need an undercoat too? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, using this product could be an option for this application. Assuming the surface is thoroughly prepared as detailed in the technical datasheet, we'd recommend applying Rust-Oleum Mathys ND14 Cleaner Degreaser to remove any grease, oil, dirt and other contaminants to leave a clean, dry and sound substrate, 2 brush coats of Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Peganox could be used to apply to the steel, the first will be to Prime. However due to being water-based, if the application is immediately required, we would suggest using Rust-Oleum Noxyde Pegarust due to the colder temperatures, as there is a chance the Peganox may fail due to application below 10C and increased drying times.
Kath on 2023-07-12 17:15:01 | Question:
Hi, Is this product suitable to paint a horsebox with please? Also how many litres is 5kg?? If its not, could you please recommend a product, I will be painting it with a roller and brush and could also do with a roof sealant please. Thank you so much in advance :) |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming you are looking to paint the vertical areas of the horse box and it is made of steel, it is clean, dry, souund and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet this could be used. But it does have a limited colour range, for a better colour range you could consider Rust-Oleum CombiColor Original. This can be mixed to many RAL, NCS or BS colours in a gloss or satin finish. For use with Combicolor Original if there are any bare metal areas, this should be primed first. For steel prime with Rust-Oleum 3369/3380 CombiPrimer Anti-Corrosion. For galvanised steel prime with Rust-Oleum 3302 CombiPrimer Adhesion Primer. For the roof you could consider Rust-Oleum Mathys Fillcoat.
mark on 2023-02-28 12:13:11 | Question:
Good afternoon I’m looking for a paint to go onto new steel beams (not galvanised) which need added protection. Will this be suitable . 4 beams at 5m lengths . How much will I need Thank you in advance |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming no level of fire protection is required, the steels are bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet this product can be used. The usual derusting procedures should be undertaken (min. Sa 2 sand blasting, min. St 2 steel brush, etc.) or by high-pressure water (min. 600 bars). Dedust well after sand blasting. The coverage rate for this product is 200g per m² per coat. Two coats minimum are recommended.
Tom on 2022-07-11 12:49:04 | Question:
Good afternoon, We are looking for a paint with the properties stated but for an environment with a relatively high temperature (approx 150C) will Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Peganox withstand those sorts of temps? Kind regards Tom |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Thank you for the enquiry, will need more information and pictures of the project to assist with this enquiry, please can you send these to [email protected]
Lee Waters on 2021-09-01 11:24:25 | Question:
IS the Peganox classed as a High Build Zinc Phosphate Primer and is it available in white ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Peganox is a water based, low VOC, single component, elastomeric coating that provides rust-proofing, corrosion and waterproofing protection optimized for brush or roller application. It wouldn;t be described as a high build primer, more a direct to metal anti-corrosive finish and yes, it is available in white.
Richard Megeary on 2019-06-27 13:24:19 | Question:
We are looking at an application for a low fume paint, to use on an Air Handling Unit Fan, in a Hospital. The Air Handling unit will only be taken off line for the time it takes to rub down the fan and paint it. Will this paint be suitable? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Peganox is a water based paint and so absolutely can be said to be a “low fume paint”. However even water based paints still have a “smell” to them – for example, even painting emulsion to decorate your home. So this must be borne in mind by the client – especially in an environment such as a hospital, that we cannot, and do not, make any specific claims regarding any possible odours noticed within the hospital after application whilst still drying.
Richard Tobin on 2019-04-08 20:39:01 | Question:
Hi, I'm thinking of using Noxyde Peganox to treat some rusty areas of bodywork /chassis on my van. I know it is'nt specified for this but I'm looking for a brush on system to patch up smallish areas. Question 1. After manually de rusting with angle grinder/ wire brush would you recommend using a rust converter such as Fertan or Aquasteel etc? Question 2. Although this is a top coat, can I overpaint with other paints inorder to colour match different areas? If so what types? Question 3. What is the shelf life of a can once it has been opened? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Pegarust can be applied directly bare metal but doesn;t leave a hard, abrasion resistant finish. We would recommend Jotun Jotamastic 90 for your application as this is a surface tolerant, abrasion resistant, 2 part epoxy coating available in most RAL or BS colours and providing no areas are exposed to UV, would be left as a final finish.
Calvin Jones on 2018-07-12 00:49:20 | Question:
Do you REALLY have to prime old galvanised sheeting? The data sheet on rustoleum.com says... "PRIMING Normally not required. Exceptions include: New galvanized steel: Prime with 3202 Clear Blue Undercoat Smooth metals: Prime with Pegalink" There is another (european?) data sheet which just says 'use primer with non-ferrous metals' so that seems clear. But then again another online company i spoke to said it was fine on aged galvaised... sorry i`m confused and i need the right answer or im wasting money on an expensive primer or a lot of time on a roof coating that wont last! Thanks. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We are not sure which data sheet you have read which advises the use of Rust-Oleum 3202 Galvinoleum Primer, but to our knowledge this has never been advised by Rust-Oleum UK. You can see the latest PDS (Product Data Sheet) for Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Peganox on our website on the product page under the 'Download' section. This states 'On non-ferrous substrates, use PVDF Primer or Pegalink as adhesion primer first.' In answer to your query (do you REALLY have to use a primer) – well that depends on the full circumstances of the project i.e. condition of the substrate, expectation of performance levels, expectation of life span etc. So it is indeed POSSIBLE to apply Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Peganox directly to correctly prepared non-ferrous substrates, but Rust-Oleum's best advice would be to use a primer.
Donna on 2018-07-11 10:59:02 | Question:
Hi it's says it is a primer and top coat in one so would I be able to paint my van for protection ? Also is it a paint and ehat colour is it plz.? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Although we do not offer automotive paints, many customers have used Rust-Oleum CombiColor to hand paint a vehicle.
Richard on 2018-03-18 11:19:32 | Question:
I have some secondhand galvanised corrugated cladding which i want to paint. The cladding has areas of old paint and rust. Would your noxyde peganox paint be suitable to paint directly onto this? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
After cleaning and removal of all loose rust, flaking paint, etc. if you want to apply Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Peganox you would need to first prime with Rust-Oleum Mathys Pegalink Universal Adhesion Primer. Alternatively Rust-Oleum Mathys Noxyde Pegarust could be applied directly without the need of a primer.
Andy Jones on 2017-06-02 16:27:27 | Question:
Is Noxyde Peganox suitable to use on galvanised roller shutter doors ?
Thanks and Regards
Andy Jones |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes but areas must be first primed with either Rust-Oleum Mathys Pegalink Universal Adhesion Primer or Rust-Oleum PVDF Primer.
