Surface Preparation
Unpainted Zinc-Coated, Steel and Aluminium Surfaces:
- Paint new zinc-coated sheet metal roof at the earliest the following year after the installation
- Best adhesion is achieved to already faded, mechanically or chemically roughened zinc-coated surface
- Remove possible rust (to St2 degree) by scraping and wire-brushing
- Remove possible white rust by brushing or sanding. Remove dirt, water soluble salts, grease, and oil from the surface with Panssaripesu Roof Cleaning Agent and brush
- Rinse carefully with water and allow to dry
- Roughen the aluminium surfaces before painting
- Prime the zinc-coated metal surfaces and roughened aluminium and steel surfaces with 1 coat of Rostex Super Akva or Rostex Super
Industrially Coated Surfaces:
- Find out the type, condition, and adhesion of the original coating
- Check the maintenance from the coating manufacturer and the need for a separate primer
Pre-treated Surfaces:
- Painted with Panssari Akva 1-2 times
- The recommended dry-film thickness is 50-80 µm. Pay attention in choosing the correct brush
- Recommendation: Tikkurila roof paint brush T6. Roof tile profile surfaces are recommended to be painted by spray
Application Methods
Painting
- The slipperiness of paint surface can be reduced by adding Non-Slip Agent into the paint, 1/3 l of powder into 10 l of paint. When using the Non-Slip Agent there has to be two paint layers in the paint system and Non Slip Agent is included in the second layer.
Maintenance Painting
- Surface painted with Panssari Akva can be recoated with Panssari Akva
Cleaning of Tools
- Clean tools with water or with Tikkurila Pensselipesu (Tool cleaner. Remove hardened paint with Tikkurila Tool Cleaner
Maintenance Instructions
- After 1 month the surface can be cleaned with Huoltopesu Maintenance Cleaner (mixing ratio: 1 part of Huoltopesu to 10 parts of water)
- Clean soiled surfaces and stains with a stronger Huoltopesu solution (1:1)
- Rinse the surface carefully after maintenance and let it dry
Application Conditions
- The surface to be painted must be dry and warmer than the surrounding air
- During treatment and drying the temperature of the air, surface and product must be at least +5ºC and the relative humidity of the air below 80 %. The relative humidity of the air, temperature and wind speed have a strong impact in drying time
- The temperature of the surface may not exceed +40ºC, otherwise the water will evaporate too quickly. This may cause e.g
- porosity, bubbling and weakened adhesion. Especially when maintenance painting conditions should be avoided, under which the paint dries quickly (warm and windy weather)
- The application time of Panssari Akva can be extended slightly by thinning the paint with water by max. 10 %
- Excessive thinning and painting under unfavorable conditions may cause sagging of the paint
- Plan the work so that the paint surface has enough time to dry before dewfall
- Do not paint if the risk of rain is imminent
- Previously painted surfaces/industrially coated (coil-coated) surfaces: Remove possible rust (to St2 degree) and remove loose coating/paint with a scraper and wire brush. Clean the surface with Panssaripesu Roof Cleaning Agent from dirt, grease, oil, wax etc. according to instructions using a brush. Rinse the surfaces carefully, preferably with a pressure washer
- Prime bare metal areas with Rostex Super Akva or Rostex Super Metal Primer
Health and Safety
