Description

Rust-Oleum 769/780 Damp-Proof Rust Primer - Corrosive Protection Primer

Rust-Oleum 769 Damp-Proof Rust Primer is a single pack primer based on a fish oil containing alkyd. This unique formulation allows direct application on slightly moist or dry metal surfaces, making it ideal for rusted steel surfaces. The primer penetrates rust to expel moisture and air, encapsulating rust for superior protection.

Application & Surface Preparation

Before applying the primer, ensure surfaces are free from grease, oil, and other contaminants using a cleaner or high-pressure steam. Remove loose rust and coatings by scraping, wire brushing, or light sanding. The primer can be applied with a brush, roller, or spray, with recommended thinning using Rust-Oleum Thinner 633 for brush and roller, and Thinner 641 for spray applications.

  • Brush: Dilute up to 10% with Thinner 633.
  • Roller: Dilute up to 10% with Thinner 633, using medium pile rollers.
  • Airless Spray: Dilute up to 5% with Thinner 641, using a tip size of 0.013-0.015 inches.
  • Air-atomised Spray: Dilute 10-20% with Thinner 641, using a tip size of 1.2-1.8 mm and 2-4 bar pressure.

The primer is touch dry within 4 hours and can be recoated after 24 hours. Ensure all tools are cleaned with Rust-Oleum Thinner 160 or mineral spirits after use.

Why Choose Rust-Oleum 769?

Rust-Oleum 769 is a trusted choice for rust protection, combining ease of application with long-lasting results. Its fish oil-based formula has been proven since 1921 to provide effective rust inhibition. Suitable for light industrial exposure, this primer ensures your metal surfaces are well-protected against the elements.

Question:

Can you use this over the top of old paint on metal external stairs

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

No, this product wouldn't be suitable for application to previously painted metal. If you can confirm the type of metal you are looking to re-paint, we maybe able to offer an alternative, you can e-mail [email protected] to confirm.

questions Richard on 2023-08-30 08:35:22
Question:

Im looking to use this on the inside of automotive panels and pillars as part of a restoration project. Eventually, i intend to prime the whole car in an epoxy primer, will this be compatible? If so, can you recommend an epoxy primer to use too?

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Assuming the panels are steel this product will be suitable to use as a Primer to be applied in accordance with the technical data sheet.

This can be over coated with either Rust-Oleum CombiColor Original or Rust-Oleum 7500 Alkythane as the finishing coat.

These products are both available to 4400+ RAL, BS & NCS Colours in a satin or gloss finish.

The manufacturer doesn't recommend applying an Epoxy Primer over Rust-Oleum 769/780 Damp-Proof Rust Primer.

Question:

Is this primer and the Rust-Oleum 7500 Alkythane topcoat appropriate for use on Cast Iron? Thanks

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Yes assuming the cast iron is bare, clean, dry, sound and free from rust or corrosion.

questions Cindy on 2023-03-06 16:01:14
Question:

Can I paint acrylics over this primer?

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

The recommended topcoat for this primer is Rust-Oleum 7500 Alkythane.

If you choose to use any other type of paint we would recommend to test on a small area for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application.

questions Nigel Sykes on 2022-12-08 07:20:15
Question:

Hello, Is the 769/780 suitable for use when repainting the inside of a steel boat hull? This will be in January/February and although de-rusted as far as possible will probably still be damp and no doubt cold! Also, after it has cured can it be over coated with a two pack epoxy type paint… this type of top coat would be preferred to protect against oil, fuel and other chemical spills Thank you nin anticipation, Nigel.

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Unfortunately no this product would not be suitable for this application.

Assuming application will take place when the substrate temperature is above 5°C and the relative humidity is less than 80% with the temperature 3 degrees above the dew point so no condensation forms you can consider the two pack option below.

All rust and corrosion must be removed, the area should be clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet then Teamac High Performance 2 Pack Zinc Phosphate Primer applied followed by two coats of Teamac High Performance Polyurethane Topcoat.

This is available in many RAL, NCS or BS colours in a gloss finish.

questions Gabriel on 2022-02-17 14:43:02
Question:

Hello! Is it possible to paint over this primer with Rust-Oleum High temperature resistant paint (1078)? Thank you!

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Assuming the substrate will be exposed to dry heat, no this primer would not be suitable for this application.

Rust-Oleum Heat Resistant Paint 750°C is self priming for many substrates.
