Recommendations for Wood Species
Recommended:
- Oak
- Pine
- Spruce
- Beech
- Ash
- Alder
- Douglas Fir
- Birch
- Larch
Possible:
- Maple: apply very thinly and carry out a trial application before use.
- American/European Walnut: apply very thinly and carry out a trial application before use.
- Smoked Oak: 3011 Glossy, 3032 Satin, 3065 Semi-Matt are possible. 3062 Matt is not recommended because the matting agents within 3062 are likely to react with the dark colour and result with a white powdery effect.
Not Possible:
The wood species below are not recommended for Polyx-Oil Original. Please use Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin instead.
- Cedar
- Iroko
- Mahogany
- Teak
- South American Walnut
- Sapele
- Bamboo
- Acacia
- Ipe
- Merbau
- Ebony
- Wenge
- Sycamore
- Rosewood
Also not recommended:
- Green Oak: moisture content is often above the maximum 20% recommended.
- Idigbo: contains yellow dyes which leaches when the wood becomes wet and stains when in contact within iron.
- Other woods treated with a varnish, lacquer or other surface coatings must be completely sanded before use.
Notes
- Clear oils can darken the appearance of the wood. To retain the light character of oak please use Osmo Polyx-Oil 3044 Raw.
- Some woods are highly porous and require an especially thin application, as a result the drying time can be increased.
- Ventilate well while drying. After 2-3 weeks, the surface is fully cured.
- Application of top coat of clear Osmo Polyx-Oil Original can be carried out once the first coat has dried. However, if the first coat was a coloured Osmo finish (eg Polyx-Oil Tint or Wood Wax Finish Transparent) wait approx. 24hrs before applying Osmo Polyx-Oil Original clear top coat.
- For top coating Osmo white colours use white tinted Polyx Oils ( eg: 3040 or 3240) to avoid yellowing.
- Recommended application is 35ml/m²
- For exotic hardwood species use Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin.
- A base coat of Osmo Wood Protector is recommended for use in bathrooms or kitchens.
- Multi-purpose cleaners such as washing up liquids and detergents are highly detrimental to the finished surface and is not recommended to be used as discolouration or staining may be possible.
- Other household cleaning products such as vanish, bleach, baking soda etc. are likely to cause severe discolouration or staining.
- Be cautious if applying 3062 Clear Matt over a dark coloured surface. The matting agents within 3062 may produce a white mist or powdery effect upon the surface. It is recommended to apply 3065 Semi-Matt if a sheen is not desired. Always trial apply!

Questions
Question about the product
Emma on 2024-05-26 20:41:29 | Question:
Hi, I have an indoor workbench made of plywood and want a matt or satin finish to the surface. The surface will be used constantly for tools etc. Is the osmo polyx high solid suitable? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, this product wouldn't be deemed durable enough to withstand this type of application. Assuming the plywood is clean, dry, sound and lightly abraded, as an alternative you could consider Rust-Oleum 4900 Polycoat 2K. This product is a hard-wearing, clear protective coat. We'd recommend 2 - 3 coats to ensure the desired outcome is achieved, however if heavy tools are dropped on to the surface or dragging occurs, this may result in a damaged surface over time.
Dave on 2024-03-12 10:33:51 | Question:
Hi. I have some oak veneer shelves I want to use this on, is it suitable for veneer? Thanks Dave |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, for application to veneers we would recommend the use of Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin
Jonny White on 2023-10-22 18:24:29 | Question:
Is a application of Osmo Wood Protector, followed by an application of Osmo Polyx-Oil, a suitable way of treating and protecting an outdoor hardwood sill? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Osmo Polyx Oil wouldn't be suitable for this application due to being designed for interior use only. Assuming you have a bare, clean, dry, sound substrate that is lightly abraded and prepared in accordance with the technical datasheet, you could consider Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain, in 701 Clear Matt finish. However as it is a clear finish, it isn't fully resistant to UV fading, but will slow the risk down for a period of time. Most timber exposed to sunlight will start to fade medium to long-term, even if the finish is made up of a colour pigment as well as clear.
