Surface Preparation
- Ensure surface to be treated is clean, thoroughly dry, sound and free from wax, oil or any other contamination
- Employ adequate methods to remove dirt, dust, oil, and all other contaminants that could interfere with adhesion of the coating
- It is important that the substrate is thoroughly dry before application and during the drying period otherwise blanching (whitening) may occur
- Existing coatings should be lightly sanded to aid adhesion
- Weathered timber should be made good
- On bare wood the use of a decking stain is recommended prior to application of this product as this will give the wood improved UV resistance and prolong the lifetime of the coating
- Ensure new or bare timber is adequately preserved prior to applying wood finishes, apply Blackfriar Goldstar Clear Wood Preservative to untreated timbers where required

Questions
Question about the product
Jennifer Noakes on 2022-07-16 11:46:25 | Question:
We applied Blackfriar Anti Slip Deck Coating a couple of years back. Now it has lifted and peeled a great deal. What product can you recommend to remove it as we have had little success with a power sander. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
If abrasion is proving difficult you could use a paint stripper such as Thermoguard Thermostrip PRO. This can remove many types of paint from wood, metal, brick, stone or fibreglass.
Coll on 2021-04-09 14:16:09 | Question:
Hi there is this product would be suitable on decking that is painted? Many thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, this can be applied over previously stained or bare timber. Assuming the previously painted timber is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the techncial data sheet we can recommend Smartkote Protectakote UVR. This is available in a range of colours and a clear option. We would recommend testing for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application on the previously painted timber.
Raj on 2021-01-26 15:06:57 | Question:
Can this be applied in Winter or over already damp/wet decking? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No this cannot be applied in wet conditions, the substrate must clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data sheet prior to application. These can be found in the Data Sheets tab on all product pages.
Joy on 2019-12-27 16:26:59 | Question:
Can this be used on accoya wood decking? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating hasn't been specifically tested on accoya but is suitable for wood. We could only recommend applying the coating to a small area to test for adhesion and suitability.
David on 2019-10-20 14:22:40 | Question:
I have an area of approx. 60 square meters of wood decking which I want to coat with your "anti-slip deck coating" could you tell me how much I will need to do the job as recommended in your instructions? Regards |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
You would need a minimum of 13.5lt of Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating to apply the recommended 2 coats over 60m² so you would purchase 6 x 2.5lt.
Chris on 2019-07-01 10:13:46 | Question:
Hey, can this product be used next to a swimming pool and be durable enough to withstand activities around a swimming pool? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming it is decking you wish to coat, Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating could be used however the grit particle in the coating could be quite abrasive for bare feet. If you decide to go down this route, the timber must be completely dry and free from organic material, moss, mould, etc. before applying any coating. For best protection from UV we advise staining the decking with something like Blackfriar Exterior Wood Preservative Gold Star first followed by 2 coats of Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating. Avoid any splashes of these products getting into the pool water during application. Once they have dried fully they should be OK to be close to the swimming pool itself.
Tony on 2019-01-22 11:45:25 | Question:
can this be used over a painted deck.? The deck is already painted with cuprinol outdoor white wood paint and has permanent marker pen designs on it which I wish to preserve. Does this product allow the dirt and debris to be brushed, wiped, cleaned off more easily than on just painted wood? Thanks Tony |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The solvent in Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating may dissolve and smudge the permanent marker pen. You won’t know until you do a test, it may also discolour the Cuprinol paint slightly giving it a yellow tinge. Finally, the aggregate in Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating will make the surface more difficult to clean, not easier. Another product to consider would be Smartkote Safekote.
Denis Harrison on 2019-01-21 10:56:25 | Question:
Would this product adhere to a laminate floor? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating won’t adhere to a laminate flooring material.
Katherine on 2018-12-01 20:28:00 | Question:
Can you tell me if the product is toxic to fish. Our decking hangs over the pond and we might be in danger of spilling some of the product in the pond when applying. Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes the solvent in the Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating is harmful to aquatic life. You may be able to cover over the pond below the decking to catch splashes. The cover should be kept in place for several days until the coating is hard. It may be advisable to apply the coating during warmer weather next spring. The coating will dry quicker and the decking will be drier.
Jennifer Baird on 2018-05-20 09:51:37 | Question:
Hello, My decking in my garden is giving my son splinters every time he in out on it barefoot. I really like the colour of the natural wood so I am not particularly keen on painting it a colour. Is there anything you can suggest? Thanks, Jennifer |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating would be our recommendation as it is a clear, protective surface coating that will seal the wood. The surfaces would need to be sanded smooth if you have any areas where the wood is damaged and causing splinters. We have no testing or experience of this product being used specifically to stop splinters so cannot offer any guarantees on performance but it will allow you to keep the look of your decking and provide a sealed, anti-slip surface to the wood.
Christopher on 2017-10-24 11:12:57 | Question:
You say that anti-slip deck coating can be applied over decking stain but can it be applied equally well over decking oil provided there is some delay between applications? If so, how long to leave after applying the oil, please? Thanks. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, it must not be applied over oils or waxes.
Karen on 2016-10-03 11:09:27 | Question:
Good Afternoon
I would like to know if you can use the clear Anti -Slip coating over decking that has already had a coat of cupranol decking stain
Regards
Karen | |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
As long as the Cuprinol product does not contain any wax, then Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating should be fine to apply. If it does contain wax you may be able to leave it to weather for approximately 6 months to allow any waxes to wear away and then apply Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating - be sure to carry out a test area prior to full application if this is the case.

GUNITA on 2016-08-22 10:11:51 | Question:
Dear Sirs
is that possible to use this anti-slip coating for the floors inside the private house?
And other question - how often is necessary to renew the coating?
Thank you in advance,
Gunita Vilmane
[email protected] |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We do not recommend the Blackfriar Anti-Slip Deck Coating is used on interior surfaces as it would provide a poor appearance and be difficult to clean. To provide a low slip finish internal we would normally recommend a matt or satin floor varnish would be a better option (such as Coo-Var Polyurethane Clear Floor Coating). The floor varnishes are quite hard wearing and should last a number of years before needing to be recoated in the high wear areas.
