Coo-Var Acrylic Varnish
This premium, water-based acrylic varnish offers a clear finish in both gloss and eggshell options. It has been specifically formulated for interior use on wooden surfaces, ensuring a long-lasting, attractive layer of protection. Its water-based composition makes it an eco-friendly alternative to solvent-based products, reducing harmful emissions without compromising performance.
Application and Use
Ideal for use on interior wooden surfaces, this varnish is suitable for flooring, furniture, and panelling. It provides a durable finish that enhances the natural appearance of wood. For best results, surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of contaminants. It can be applied with a brush, roller, or spray. Ensure the ambient temperature is above 7°C during application and drying.
Limitations and Recommendations
This product is designed for interior use only and should not be applied to outdoor surfaces or in areas prone to water exposure. It is important not to use this varnish when temperatures are below 7°C, as it may not cure properly. If you are working in a confined space, ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid painting over surfaces that are not properly prepared, as this may result in poor adhesion. If you are in doubt, refer to the data sheet for specific surface preparation guidelines.
Recommended Products
For added protection or specific finishes, consider using a compatible primer or undercoat prior to applying this varnish. Coo-Var offers a range of primers designed for various surfaces, which can enhance the adhesion and durability of the varnish. Always refer to the technical data sheet for recommendations on the most suitable combination of products.
Health and Safety
The varnish is classified as non-hazardous for transport. Avoid skin contact and inhalation. Refer to the data sheet for full health and safety guidelines.

Stephen on 2024-07-22 07:27:56 | Question:
Can I use on acrylic painting on a canvas. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the canvas is clean, dry and sound, you could consider this product as long as the canvas isn't moving around, due to varnish tending to be a little more brittle than paint. We would recommend to apply to a small test area firstly to check for compatibility/adhesion prior to coating the whole area.
Jean Pierre on 2022-01-15 07:26:34 | Question:
I’m making a snake enclosure, as this is low voc and water based it is good for the snake but is this a polyurethane product to make it waterproof ? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product is not a polyurethane and we do not have a product that is tested as animal safe. If you are specifically looking for a polyurethane varnish you could consider Coo-Var Polyurethane Varnish, but both of these are for interior application only and are not a waterproof coating.
David Wilkinson on 2021-12-06 10:09:21 | Question:
I have oak wooden worktops which have previously been treated with oil. I want to treat with acrylic varnish and appreciate the need to remove all previous treatments. Before using varnish should the area be treated with some sort of sealer/primer? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Thank you for the enquiry, unfortunately we do not have a varnish we can recommend for application to a previously oiled timber.
daniel heaton on 2021-03-29 15:28:24 | Question:
can you use this on interior brick work, or do you supply something else that would? thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No this product is for use on timber, for an invisible finish we'd recommend Hydron Mona-Guard Plus or for a wet look finish we'd recommend Hydron Mona-Guard Nhance.
Jessica on 2021-03-29 10:48:04 | Question:
Is this product heat resistant and if so what temperature will it withstand up to. Thank you |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No this product is not heat resistant and we would be unable to offer you anything heat resistant in a clear finish currently.
Kate White on 2020-12-11 05:25:29 | Question:
Would this be suitable for sealing painted kitchen cupboards, the paint used was Valparaiso cabinet paint? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the cabinets, any previous coatings are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data Sheet, Coo-Var Acrylic Varnish can be used over existing paints on kitchen cabinets. We would always recommend testing for compatability and adhesion prior to full application with any previously applied paints.
Ray foster on 2017-03-09 16:56:19 | Question: Would you reccomend for the varnish of oak doors internal |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: No, instead we would recommend Coo-Var Danish Oil.
