Features & Benefits
- Protects ferrous metals against rust
- Suitable as a primer or self-finish
- Easily applied by brush or roller
- Complies with LU Standard 1-085 ‘Fire Safety Performance of Materials’
- Complies with EN 1504-7 Surface Protection Systems
Uses
- To provide a galvanic protection on iron and steel
- Can be used as a self-finish or as a durable rust inhibiting primer beneath selected top coats
- Recommended for the protection of structural steelwork, agricultural and construction plant and machinery, gates, railings, iron pipework and guttering, and the rust prevention of in-situ welding work
Application
- Some rust removers based on phosphoric acid tend to leave an electrically insulating film on ferrous metals and must not be used
- Galvafroid is supplied at the correct consistency for direct application from the tin but, should it be found necessary to thin, only Fosroc Thinner/Cleaner should be added, at a rate not exceeding 1 litre of thinners to 8 litres of Galvafroid
- The minimum application temperature is 5°C
- Where required, Galvafroid may be painted to improve durability or to enhance appearance
- Galvafroid should be removed from tools and equipment with Fosroc Thinner/Cleaner immediately after use. Dried material can only be removed mechanically.
- Comes in packs of 6 x 400 ml tins, packs of 4 x 800 ml tins, or a 1.9 litre tin
- Coverage when used as a primer: 16m²/litre
- Coverage when used as a self-finish: 8m²/litre
- Zinc content by volume on dry film: 61%
- Zinc content by weight on dry film: 90%
Limitations
- Formulated for application to clean ferrous substrates and should not be used on rusty, corroded surfaces
- Should not be applied over existing coatings
- Should not be used on surfaces in contact with drinking water
- Should not be used on surfaces exposed to soft water at temperatures above 60°C
- Should not be used on surfaces treated with phosphoric acid based rust removers
- Should not be overcoated with materials containing strong solvents such as chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons, esters and ethers
- Galvafroid is flammable. Keep away from sources of ignition. No smoking. In the event of fire, extinguish with CO2 or foam. Do not use a water jet

Questions
Question about the product
Sarah on 2024-08-25 10:31:16 | Question:
Can I paint new galvanised weld mesh wire panels without cleaning first? No corrosion currently, I just want to change the colour |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product could be applied to prepared galvanised steel, however the colour will remain the same and essentially provide no added benefit. Please e-mail [email protected] with further details of your requirements to allow us to help further.
Gokul Gireesh on 2023-12-05 13:07:38 | Question:
I have a steel structure which is hot dipped galvanised. Now there are sections of the structure that have shown corrosion. Can I clean back the corrosion and coat the entire structure in galvafroid for a uniform final finish? Does galvafroid stick on to hot dipped galvanised metal? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, this product can be used on galvanised steel. Assuming the galvanised steel is thoroughly cleaned and degreased as detailed in the technical datasheet, to ensure the removal of all oils, grease, mill scale and rusted areas, we'd firstly recommend preparing the galvanised areas with Teamac Mordant Solution (T Wash), which increase the adhesive properties for you to overcoat with Fosroc Galvafroid.
Tom Barnard on 2023-08-24 09:25:44 | Question:
I am looking to specify a coating for our steel doors. Our current spec is: 01. ALL SUBSTRATE METALS SHALL BE PREPARED TO SA 2.5 02. ALL COATING SHALL BE 3 PACK MARINE GRADE GLOSS COATING. 03. COLOUR: RAL BS4800 HOLLYBUSH 14 C 39 We have experienced issues with paint delaminating from the doors due to rusting of the substrate steel. can fosroc Galvafroid be used as a primer for 3 pack marine grade gloss coatings. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product may be painted to improve durability and/or enhance appearance, but it should not be rubbed down to obtain a smooth surface for finishing paints. For general purposes a good oil bound or alkyd paint should be used. Fosroc Dekguard A Plus can be used to provide a decorative finish to Fosroc Galvafroid, with a 2 coat application recommended. Where any work is subject to corrosive and marine conditions a non-saponifiable finishing paint should be used such as Chlorinated Rubber. It is advisable to allow Fosroc Galvafroid to weather for at least 3 days prior to applying the finishing coat. Cellulose and bituminous paint are not generally suitable for over-painting Fosroc Galvafroid. Assuming the proposed 3 pack marine paint meets the above requirements, then Fosroc Galvafroid can be used as a Primer.
Sean Parkinson on 2022-10-18 15:46:03 | Question:
Good Afternoon If steel reinforcement bars are coated with galvafroid, can they be cast into concrete? Will this affect the bond of the concrete to the bar? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, the bond to rebar is not based the metal but the ridges and deformations of the bar so as long as it’s not a smooth bar it will bond fine.
