Teamac Zinc Rich Primer Aerosol
The Zinc Rich Primer is a specialised, single-pack coating formulated to provide superior protection for iron and steel surfaces. With a high concentration of metallic zinc, this primer offers cathodic protection, acting as a form of cold galvanising. This feature is crucial for environments where steel is exposed to harsh conditions, ensuring that the primer acts as a sacrificial layer to prevent rust and corrosion.
Application Areas
This primer is specifically designed for use on iron and steel surfaces. It is particularly effective in industrial settings where steel structures are exposed to the elements. The primer must be applied directly to bare metal to achieve the desired protective effect. It is suitable for both new steel structures and maintenance of existing ones. However, it should not be used on non-metallic surfaces or where contact with water is constant without adequate topcoat protection.
Performance and Benefits
One of the standout features of this zinc-rich primer is its ability to create a highly conductive coating. This is essential for the cathodic protection it offers, ensuring that the underlying steel remains shielded from corrosive elements. The grey matt finish provides an attractive appearance while ensuring maximum adhesion of subsequent topcoats.
- High zinc content for maximum protection.
- Effective as a standalone primer or as part of a multi-coat system.
- Quick drying time, allowing for faster project completion.
Application Guidelines
For optimal results, surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned and prepared before application. Blast cleaning to SA 2½ is recommended, especially for heavily corroded surfaces. If this is not possible, mechanical cleaning should be employed. The primer should be mixed well before use to ensure even distribution of zinc particles. Application is best performed in well-ventilated areas, and it is essential to allow adequate drying time between coats to prevent adhesion issues.
Recommended Topcoats
While the zinc-rich primer can provide excellent protection on its own, using it as part of a system with compatible topcoats enhances its effectiveness. Always consult the technical data sheet for compatibility and application instructions.
Limitations
This product is not suitable for use on galvanised steel, aluminium, or other non-ferrous metals. It should not be applied in conditions of high humidity or temperatures below 5°C, as this can affect drying times and adhesion. Always ensure the primer is fully cured before applying any topcoat, and avoid using in poorly ventilated areas without proper respiratory protection.
