P on 2024-08-16 20:47:28 | Question:
I have a steel roof frame to paint in a commercial unit, it was painted before I bought the place and I'm not sure if it was done with a normal paint or fire safety paint. Do I need to strip back this paint before painting with intumescent paint or can I give it a rough sand with a 240 grit? If so, could you recommend how to strip back the original paint? Thanks. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, we wouldn't recommend this product. An intumescent paint system can only be over painted with the same manufacturers approved topcoats. In some instances we can offer an intumescent paint system that with a test for compatibility and adhesion can be applied over other coatings, but in most cases it would need to be removed back to bare metal. Please complete the steel form on the Thermoguard Fire Application Forms page and return.
Jessica on 2022-01-24 16:03:07 | Question:
Hi, do you sell this in any smaller quantities than 2.5l? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately no, 2.5ltr is the smallest size.
Maurice Williams on 2020-03-28 12:09:01 | Question:
Is this paint OK for an integral garage ceiling? If not, what would you recommend? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would need to know the level of fire protection you are required to achieve and what the ceiling is made from that is to be coated. Please contact our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2) with this information and they will be able to advise on a suitable system.
Fiona Murphy on 2019-04-22 21:25:35 | Question:
I am currently painting an RSJ with waterbased intumescent paint and it isincredibly glutenous ,difficult to spread and the finish is really lumpy. What could cause this please? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Intumescent paint is notoriously thick and not the most aesthetic of products to use. We would recommend the paint is kept in a warm place overnight before use and then it be mechanically stirred prior to application which should make it much more fluid and easier to use.
Darren on 2018-04-05 15:27:08 | Question: Is it possible to just use the eggshell finish coat over the top of a steel supporting girder previously coated in Hammerite to provide 30 min fire protection or does it specifically need the intumescent undercoat? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: The intumescent basecoat (Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+) must be applied first to achieve any level of fire protection. In this instance the steels would need to be completely stripped of Hammerite would need to be completely before application of Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ and Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ Finish.
Stephen on 2018-03-17 10:12:23 | Question: I want to paint a flat metal roof (lift car )that has been graffitied would this be any good? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: No, Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ Finish is part of a fire protection system for structural steel and assuming you are not trying to achieve any level of fire protection we would instead recommend Rust-Oleum CombiColor, assuming this is the internal, underside of the metal roof and it had been previously painted before the graffiti attack. Clean graffiti off first as much as possible, you may require a stain blocking primer like Zinsser Cover Stain to be applied before the CombiColor finish if the graffiti is still visible.
Martyn Dobbing on 2017-11-07 11:42:09 | Question:
Hi, we are currently having a loft conversion. To meet building regs we need to have fire doors leading on to the escape route stairs on all the floor with the house now being on 3 floors. My question is, will this paint turn my current doors into fire door. Meeting the building regs. Many thanks. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, for fire retardant products that upgrade the fire resistance of doors see Door Upgrade Kits.
Chris Burroughs on 2017-10-19 08:28:42 | Question: Hi

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Please refer to our blog post Painting the Walls around a Fireplace or Multi Fuel Stove for more details.
barbara lees on 2017-01-23 19:17:49 | Question: We are currently converting our garage and do not want plasterboard walls! the building office says if we use panelling it must be class 1 spread of flame. We would like to use mdf 9mm wall panelling sheets so what paint would you recommend to make them conform? |

aubert on 2015-12-13 12:50:40 | Question: Is Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ Finish suitable to paint over the render of a chimney hearth? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: No it isn't, we recommend using Thermoguard Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat. This product isn't heat resistant and may discolour over time if continually subjected to high temperatures, but it is a much safer alternative to standard emulsion.
Oliver Dew on 2015-06-29 17:56:48 | Question: Hi there, I was wondering if you can match Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ Finish to any RAL or Pantone colour? Two colours I'm interested in are RAL 10A01 and Pantone warm gray u. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: We can mix Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ Finish to most RAL, BS and NCS colours. We cannot produce Pantone colours but can offer the 10A01 you have asked for, this is actually in the BS 4800 colour range not RAL and is available to select as a standard colour from the options listed on the product on our website.
