Rust-Oleum 1080 HB Metal Primer
Rust-Oleum 1060/1080 High Build Metal Primer is a solvent-based, high-build coating designed for the extra protection of bare or blasted metal. This primer offers maximum durability under severely corrosive conditions, making it ideal for industrial and coastal environments. Available in grey, this single-component primer is tintable to virtually any colour, ensuring it meets specific aesthetic requirements.
Features
- High content of rust-inhibiting pigments for superior corrosion resistance.
- Lasting flexibility, ensuring the coating remains effective even under harsh conditions.
- Touch dry in 4 hours, recoat after 24 hours, and fully cured in 8 days.
- Protects up to C4 corrosion class when used with Rust-Oleum 7500 Alkythane topcoat.
- Easy application with various methods: brush, roller, air-atomised spray, or airless spray.
Application Instructions
For optimal results, ensure the substrate is clean and free from grease, oil, and other contaminants. Abrasive blasting to Sa 2½ (ISO 8501-1:1988) is recommended for removing rust and mill scale. Apply the primer when the temperature of the air, substrate, and coating material is between 5 and 35°C, and the relative humidity is below 85%.
Application methods:
- Brush/Roller: Up to 10% volume Rust-Oleum Thinner 633. Medium nap polyamide rollers (8-14 mm) are recommended.
- Airless Spray: Up to 20% volume Rust-Oleum Thinner 641. Use pneumatic and electric airless equipment with a tip size of 0.013-0.015 inches and fluid pressure of 130-200 bar.
- Air-atomised Spray: 10-20% volume Rust-Oleum Thinner 641 with a gravity or pressure cup. Tip size: 1.4-2.2 mm and atomizing pressure: 2-4 bar.
Surface and Environmental Considerations
Rust-Oleum 1060/1080 is designed for metal substrates, particularly new and blasted steel. It performs exceptionally well in environments where protection against corrosion, weathering, and UV light is critical. However, avoid using this primer on galvanized surfaces and always ensure the substrate is properly prepared for the best results.
Recommended Products
- Rust-Oleum 7500 Alkythane – for topcoating and enhanced corrosion protection.
