A solvent-based penetrative primer for use before painting with Elastocolor Paint. Has high penetration properties for porous substrates. Applications include:
- Fixing treatment for chalking and dusty substrates such as cementitious renders and concrete surfaces before painting with Elastocolor Paint
- Anti-evaporation protection of fresh Mapegrout repair mortars, from rapid evaporation of water due to sun and wind
- Impregnation of superficially and remove porous surfaces dusty substrates, by impregnation. For example: cementitious and lime based renders, asbestos cement and concrete blocks
- Priming concrete surfaces repaired with products from the Mapegrout range before smoothing with Elastocolor Rasante or painting with Elastocolor Paint
- Priming new concrete surfaces before smoothing with Elastocolor Rasante or painting with Elastocolor Paint
- Protection of fresh render and repair mortar surfaces, from rapid water evaporation, especially on hot or windy days, which can cause the formation of cracks in the plastic phase before painting over with Elastocolor Paint
- For professional use only
Mapei Elastocolor Primer is a ready-to-use fixative, based on synthetic resins in solvent, prepared according to a formula developed in the Mapei Research Laboratories. Elastocolor Primer is used to impregnate concrete surfaces repaired with products from the Mapegrout line before smoothing or painting with Elastocolor Rasante or with Elastocolor.
The product penetrates into porous substrates and ensures excellent insulation and good adherence to the paint that will be applied. Elastocolor Primer is also used as a curing agent for repair renders and mortars and can be directly painted over with Elastocolor. The product does not need to be removed before painting the repaired surfaces because it does not diminish the bonding strength of the protective material to the substrate.

Features & Benefits
- Easily penetrates into porous substrates and ensures excellent insulation and good adherence to the paint that will be applied
- If used as an anti-evaporation product on fresh repair mortar surfaces from the Mapegrout range and cementitious and lime based mortars, Elastocolor Primer does not have to be removed before protection with Elastocolor Paint because it does not interfere with the adhesion of the paint to the substrate
- When Elastocolor Primer is used as a fixative on cured surfaces, it can be painted over with Elastocolor Paint after 5-6 hours at +20°C. When Elastocolor Primer is used as an anti-evaporation agent, 3 weeks must pass before it can be painted over
- Elastocolor Primer satisfies UNI 8657 and UNI 8658 concerning anti-evaporation products
- Used in projects including Church Santa Famiglia di Gesù - Lecce - Italy; Bridge Crostolo - Reggio Emilia - Italy; Bridge Krk – Krk Isle - Croatia
Recommendations
- Do not dilute Elastocolor Primer with solvents and water
- Do not apply Elastocolor Primer on non-porous substrates
- Do not apply Elastocolor Primer over Mapelastic
- After its application, the substrate must not appear vitrified
- Use the product at temperatures between 5°C and 35°C
- Do not apply Elastocolor Primer if rain is forecast
Application
Used as a fixative before painting
Preparing the substrate
The surface to be treated with Elastocolor Primer must be perfectly clean and sound. Completely remove dirt, dust, grease, oils and efflorescence by sandblasting, hydro-sandblasting or simply with water under pressure.
Washing with hot water or steam is particularly recommended if oil or grease are present.
Wait until the substrate is completely dry.
Preparing the product
Elastocolor Primer is ready-to-use.
Applying the product
Elastocolor Primer is applied using conventional methods: by brush, roller or spray. For good impregnation a single coat application is sufficient. The next coat of paint must be applied when Elastocolor Primer is dry.
Used as a curing agent
Preparing the surface
Before applying Elastocolor Primer the fresh mortar surface must be finished with a float until level (and ensure a suitable weaving to directly receive the following protection with Elastocolor Paint).
Preparing the product
Elastocolor Primer is ready-to-use, therefore it should never be diluted with solvents.
Applying the product
Spray Elastocolor Primer evenly over the surface with a manual pump or compressed air immediately after the surface has been float finished.
Cleaning
Brushes, rollers and spraying equipment must be cleaned with white spirit before the product dries.
Consumption
Used as a fixative:
- 100-150 g/m depending on the porosity of the substrate.
Used as a curing agent:
- 110-150 g/m.
