Joinery (Doors & Windows) Stains

Invigorate your exterior wood windows and doors with decorative wood stains from the biggest and best brands, including Osmo, Remmers, Blackfriar, and Flag, here at Rawlins Paints.

We provide many wood stain options that are cost effective, easy to use, and fast to apply and dry. Most of our wood stains are one coat and extremely weather resistant, with high UV protection. They help guard against mould and fungal attacks on your wood windows and doors, extending their life for many more years.

Apply wood stain on joinery such as wooden windows, window frames, shutters, doors, and car ports, to keep their natural look, tinting with a different colour, and protecting from the elements. Our wood stain products are compatible with almost every type of wood species such as oak, beech, Thermowood, pine, spruce, cedar, teak, and many more. Stain in 100's of colours, from natural shades to opaque woodstain colours, including anthracite grey exterior wood stain (RAL 7016).

How do you stain an exterior wood door?

Preparation is key when applying wood stain to joinery such as doors; using the correct techniques and following manufacturer instructions will help ensure the best protection for the surface.

The surface must be clean and dry, and free from any contaminants that could interfere with the application of the stain. It must also be frost-free, with a low moisture content. Dirt, grease, and old coatings that aren't adhering must be removed, sanding the surface down to sound and bright wood. Treat loose knots and resin bleeds appropriately.

Apply the stain in the direction of the wood grain and in line with the application instructions for the product, allowing time for the first coat of stain to dry before applying a second coat, if required.

Some of our wood stains can be coated with other wood products for extra UV protection and against blue stain, rot and insects, ensuring your wood doors and other joinery are fully protected.

How do you stain an exterior window?

The preparation steps above also apply for wood windows and frames. You will want to cover the glass and use masking tape to prevent any stain from coming into contact with the window itself. Window fittings and furnishings such as locks should be removed, or at least masked over.

Once your doors, windows, and joinery are stained to your liking, you can apply a varnish over the top for extra protection against the elements and seasonal changes. Always test a trial spot first to ensure compatibility.

Outdoor Garden Furniture Stains

Stain your outdoor wood garden furniture with the best and most-trusted brands at Rawlins Paints - Osmo, Lacq, Remmers, Blackfriar - to provide weatherproofing protection to wood chairs, benches, tables, and more. Most wood are compatible, including teak and oak.

Our decorative garden furniture stains have excellent coverage, saving you money on materials, are quick drying and often require just one coat, also saving you precious time! With 100's of stain colours available, from RAL and NCS as well as natural shades, you can easily update your garden furniture or help match to the rest of your garden.

Is it better to stain or paint outdoor furniture?

Both wood stains and garden furniture paints will protect outdoor furnishings from UV light degradation, dirt and grime, insect infestations, mould and other growths. A stain will provide such protection for wood, colouring to your tastes, whilst allowing the wood grain to show through the coating for that natural wood ambience.

What is the best protection for outdoor furniture?

It depends on the finish you prefer; paints will completely cover the wood gain in opaque colours whereas our exterior wood stains colour and protect wood without blocking the grain, leaving a natural finish.

How to apply wood stain to outdoor furniture?

Prepare the surface suitably inline with the manufacturer's instructions in the respective data sheet. Ensure the surface is clean and dry and free of contaminants and anything that could prevent adhesion.

Once prepared, stir the tin and apply with a brush or roller along the grain, thinly and evenly, allowing it to dry properly before applying a second coat.

Cladding Stains

Shop our decorative and protective wood cladding stains from renowned brands including Osmo, Lacq, and Remmers. Available in 100's of natural shades and colours from NCS and RAL, for use on popular and exotic wood cladding such as oak, ash, pine, cedar, and even Thermowood.

Protect your wood cladding and extend its life for many years to come; our cladding stains provide high UV resistance, weatherproofing, and protection against algae, mould, mildew and fungal attack. Reduce wood swelling and shrinkage from exposure to the elements.

It's easy to apply exterior wood stain to cladding with one-coat options and fast-drying products, all available at Rawlins Paints.

Can you stain cladding?

Absolutely! Whilst external wood and timber cladding can be left to grey naturally to a silver-grey colour, you can stain to 1,000's of colours at Rawlins Paints, from RAL, NCS, and British Standard shades to wood stain-effect colours. These change the look of wood cladding to help match your windows and doors, and help slow down weathering processes for years to come. What they won't do is hide the grain, so you still see the natural beauty of the wood through the stained colour.

How do you waterproof wooden cladding?

Our range of exterior wood stains will waterproof your cladding with a microporous, breathable finish which does not crack, peel or flake, and is resistant against algae, mould, mildew and fungal attack.

How do you treat exterior wood cladding?

Existing coatings should be removed, sanding the surface down and degreasing and cleaning to remove contaminants.

Preparation is key before staining wood, each of our exterior wood stain products for cladding have their own data sheets with the manufacturer's instructions for preparing the surface before staining.

Decking Stains

Stain your exterior wood decking in 100's of colours from the biggest brands such as Osmo and Remmers. Provide waterproofing protection and reduce the risk of swelling and shrinkage on most wood types including oak, beech, ash, pine, cedar, teak, and even Thermowood. Easy to apply with excellent coverage, our decking stains are fast-drying so that you won't have to worry about forecasted wet weather.

Our collection of decking stains ensure you get full life from your wooden decking, whether at home or at pubs and bars, restaurants, etc, for many years to come. Reduce the threat of rot, which can be costly to treat and remedy, with decking stains that highlight the look of the wood grain for a more natural look.

Is deck stain different than wood stain?

Yes - exterior wood stains contain chemicals to protect decking from fungal infections, mould, and more, which are unsafe to use on interior woods. As such, interior wood stains won't protect decking as much or for as long since they also lack the extra protection needed to prevent greying and damage from UV light.

Is it better to paint or stain decking? Is stain or decking oil better?

Decking stain, paint, oil, and varnish all achieve different results depending on your preference. Staining wood helps preserve it against fungal attack whilst changing its appearance with near-unlimited colours, helping you match other shades such as outdoor furniture, fencing, summerhouses, etc, without losing the natural look of the grain.

Decking paints cover wood in an opaque colour, whilst traditional decking oils nourish the wood from within and don't change the appearance much. Decking varnish provides a hardened protective layer across the surface of the decking.

Wood Fence & Shed Stain

Treat your garden fencing panels, wood sheds, cabins, playhouses, and summerhouses, with a wood stain to protect them from UV degredation, waterproofing against rain, and helping guard against algae and fungal attack. Choose from hundreds of coloured stains from the biggest names including Lacq, Osmo, and Remmers.

Keeping wood structures sound and secure helps keep unwanted intruders at bay, such as vandals looking to break through rotten fences and shed doors and walls, or animals searching for a place to nest or hibernate. They can also breach your property boundaries and lay waste to vegetable patches, fruit trees, garden landscpaing, and more.

Our wood stains are tough and durable, easy to apply with usually one coat, and requiring little to no preparation when applied to new and untreated wood. Choose from over 20 popular colours from across the spectrum, including clear and natural.

Is it better to stain or paint a shed or fence? is it worth staining?

It depends on the finish you require and the protection you want to give to your wood fence and shed.

Paint will seep into cracks and cover damage but it only sits on top of the surface, providing weather protection. Its opaque colours are ideal for completely transforming the look of garden fences and sheds, from dark to light for example. Stain soaks into the wood fibres and, whilst you can choose a coloured stain, it still shows the wood grain through the colour - ideal if you prefer the natural beauty of wood rather than strong opaque colours that paint provides.

Should I pressure wash my fence before staining?

Preparation is key before application of wood stain to garden fences, sheds, and summer houses. Any surface that you intend to stain should be clean and dry and free of dirt, dust, grime, mould, algae, etc. Power wash or brush the surface down to prepare for staining.

Can I stain my side of the fence?

We are no legal experts, but you should always ask your neighbour before making changes and alterations to shared fencing, or sheds and summerhouses that are on the property line.

Interior Furniture Stain

Re-colour your interior wood furniture by staining. At Rawlins Paints, we stock the best interior wood stains from the top manufacturers, with 280+ wood stain colours to choose from including RAL and NCS shades. With their quick drying formulas, your wood furniture won’t be out of action for too long.

Interior wood furniture can be stained to change its appearance, updating existing furnishings to match new interior décor and fittings. Staining wood can allow for more control over the colour, as the more coats used will result in a darker finish, before finishing with an appropriate wax or polish.

Simple to apply, our interior wood stains are brushed on or with the use of a cloth, penetrating the wood for a quick and easy transformation. Our interior wood stains are great to use when up-cycling furniture, giving a new lease of life to tired and old furnishings and fittings found on household waste, skips, charity shops, etc. Wood furniture doesn’t have to be the same colour or shade throughout its life - it can be stained to suit your preferences, rather than throwing away and buying expensive new furniture.

Wood Door Stains

Buy stain for your interior wood doors at Rawlins Paints in over 800 colours. Protect your wooden doors from UV exposure in light and airy rooms or areas exposed to the sun, holding their colour for years to come. Our interior wood door stains are quick drying with excellent coverage, ensuring great value for money, and incredibly user friendly.

Staining your interior wooden doors gives you more control over their final colour, with multiple coats for a darker tone, and ability to mix stains to create your own personalised shades. You’ll see excellent definition and depth of colour without obscuring the natural beauty of the grain.

If you’ve moved home recently, taken over new business premises, or simply updated your interior design, you don’t have to stick with the original doors. Nor do you have to buy expensive replacements. Interior wood doors can easily be stained and, if exposed to sunlight from windows, we have wood door stains with high UV protection, so that they won’t fade anywhere near as quickly.
