Applications
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Matt is suitable for various surfaces, providing a durable and attractive finish:
- Timber: Perfect for new or previously painted wood, offering excellent resistance to weathering.
- Metal: Bonds to galvanised metals and provides long-lasting protection.
- Masonry: Ideal for brick, stucco, and stone, ensuring a robust and enduring finish.
- Plastic: Adheres to uPVC (including windows and doors) and other plastic surfaces without the need for sanding.
- Concrete: Suitable for cured concrete, providing a strong and protective layer.
- Cladding: Excellent for various cladding materials, ensuring aesthetic appeal and durability.
- Composites: Ideal for updating the colour of front doors.
Please note: Matt finish products can be more susceptible to scuffs, watermarks, dirt, etc. so in areas of frequent contact/use such as windows, doors, roller shutters etc. an alternative finish may be more suited (such as Satin & Gloss). Please contact our Technical Department on 0113 2455450 (option 2) or send a message to technical@rawlinspaints.com for further advice if in doubt.
Instructions for Use
- Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from contaminants. Use a fungicidal wash or exterior house cleaner to remove mould and mildew.
- Remove all loose or peeling paint and chalky paint residue. Sand edges of remaining paint film until smooth.
- Composite surfaces: Always ensure that the surface has been prepared sufficiently, Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner is ideal for this. As composite surfaces tend to have a wax like finish we would also advise lightly abrading the surface area. Two coats are required, the first coat acts as the primer and the second seals and protects the system.
- Timber at risk from decay or insect attack should be treated with an appropriate preservative.
- Bare galvanised metal: apply direct to clean, bright metal, no primer required, ensure surface is clean, dry and free from any surface contamination.
- Bare Ferrous Metal: product contains a flash rust inhibitor so will not rust the bare metal on application, can be applied direct if the metal is completely rust free, if this is unlikely apply a dedicated anti-corrosive metal primer such as Rust-Oleum 3369/3380 CombiPrimer Anti-Corrosion prior to application of AllCoat Exterior Water Based.
- Shake or stir well before using.
- Apply with a synthetic bristle brush, roller, or airless sprayer (tip size 0.017” and pressure 2000-2500 PSI).
- Maintain a "wet edge" to avoid lapping. Do not apply if there is a likelihood of rain, frost, fog, or condensation affecting the freshly applied paint.
- Dries to touch in 1 hour. Full adhesion and hardness develop in 7 days. Apply a second coat for areas of high exposure such as sills and fascia boards.
- Clean tools immediately with warm water and liquid detergent. Avoid emptying into drains or watercourses.
Restrictions and Recommendations
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Matt is not intended for application to exterior floors, decks, or any surface subject to water immersion or prolonged contact with water. It is recommended that unweathered or new powder coatings or stoved enamels be abraded and degreased thoroughly before applying AllCoat Exterior. Not suitable for application onto new plastisol or new powder coating; these surfaces must be fully weathered. For additional protection and preparation, consider using other Zinsser products such as Zinsser B-I-N Primer-Sealer (spot priming knots and sap streaks) and Zinsser Cover Stain (For priming new or unpainted cedar, redwood, or other resinous timbers).
Health and Safety
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Matt contains 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one, 2-octyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one, and a reaction mass of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one. May produce an allergic reaction. Avoid breathing spray, wear protective gloves, and ensure good ventilation during application. Dispose of contents and container in accordance with all local, regional, national, and international regulations.
The product does not contain Diisocyanates.

Tracey on 2024-06-03 18:30:28 | Question:
Can I use this to paint lead on exterior of house |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Jason on 2024-05-12 10:46:48 | Question:
What is the best paint to use on wooden fence posts & concrete posts so I can get them looking the same colour |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the concrete posts are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data this product can be applied directly. For the timber posts, assuming they are bare and also prepared, they should be primed first with Zinsser Cover Stain. Any knots should be spot primed with Zinsser B-I-N first.
Lola Morgan on 2024-04-24 19:50:29 | Question:
Hiya, is this an acrylic or latex (or something else) based paint? Can I use it on top of an epoxy primer? Thankyou! |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, if a 2 pack epoxy primer has previously been used to prime the substrate, then you should overcoat with a 2-pack topcoat.
Maria on 2024-01-31 13:44:55 | Question:
Hi, I am planning on painting a mural on an exterior brick wall, can I use this paint as the base coat and can I apply afterwards acrylic water base paint on top of that once dried? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Although this product is designed to be a finish coat in it's own right when applied as a two coat system, you could also consider painting the mural in this product as it is available to be mixed to many RAL, BS & NCS colours. Whilst it can be overpainted, we'd recommend to apply a test area sample for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application.
Andy on 2023-01-08 17:57:46 | Question:
Since this product is water-based, can it be diluted? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product usually does not require thinning, but it can be thinned upto a maximum of 10% with clean water.
Lauren on 2022-07-08 10:06:19 | Question:
Hi! Is it possible to get this mixed in a valspar colour? I really love Rabbits Foot but Zinsser All Coat is the best paint I've ever used! |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately we cannot mix to a Valspar colour, we would recommend viewing a physical RAL, NCS or BS colour chart to ascertain a suitable colour match.
T Jukes on 2022-06-15 10:35:50 | Question:
All coat satin - I have a a galvanised and painted garage side panel which is now flaking and rusting. Can I use all coat satin without a primer if the flaking paint and any rust is removed by wire brushing? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortuntely no, assuming the galvanised side panel is bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet you will need to prime the area first with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3.
Lee on 2022-05-26 17:36:01 | Question:
Is zinser all coat Matt suitable to paint on wooden decking |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Maggie Murray on 2022-04-27 09:38:51 | Question:
Is the Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Matt paint suitable for cement roof tiles? If not is the satin finish suitable? Thank you |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately no, we would not recommend Zinsser Allcoat for application to cement roof tiles. Assuming the cement tiles are bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Cromar Renocoat Roof Tile Renovation Paint. This is available in slate grey or dark brown.
Lea on 2022-04-11 15:03:56 | Question:
How much paint do i need to paint two upvc front doors |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Based on an estimate of 5m² you would require approximately 1L, this would allow for two coats. The theoretical coverage for this product is 12m²/L per coat.
S Collins on 2021-11-05 08:36:15 | Question:
We have an old property that needs to breath, reading the data information it looks like this paint is waterproof but vapour permeable therefore allowing trapped moisture to escape. Can you please confirm this before I order. Also some areas have flaking paint which I will remove first. Do I need to prime these first and is so what with that will enable it to still breath. Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product does state it is vapour permable, we would need to know more information regarding the substrate to ascertain what primers may be required or if another product would be better suited to you application. Please contact technical@rawlinspaints.com with the information.
Alison on 2021-09-05 13:13:45 | Question:
Hi..can you advise if this product is suitable for painting stables and is safe for animals? Also do you do colour samples? Am struggling to choose |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately we do not have an animal safe paint to recommend. This and many of the paints we supply are mixed to industry standard RAL and BS colour codes. We would recommend looking at a colour chart in person to ascertain colour suitability. Unfortunately the manufacturer does not supply samples.
Owen Jones-Wells on 2021-08-15 20:33:08 | Question:
Can the be painted straight on to exterior grade plywood sheets, used as an internal wall lining? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the plywood is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we would recommend priming first with Zinsser Cover Stain.
Mathew on 2021-08-14 06:27:51 | Question:
Does this product require a primer application first for upvc windows or composite doors? The data sheet is not downloading. Cheers |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the upvc or composite doors are clean, dry sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet no primer is required.
Lynn Luck on 2021-07-08 09:04:20 | Question:
Zinsser All Coat Exterior Satin Finish. We need to paint the pipework to the front of the house. Mixture of old light grey painted cast iron, old (and grungy) light grey unpainted UPVC and new white unpainted UPVC. Decided on RAL 160 20 05 Beryl Black Green. I saw from previous questions/answers that Satin sheds dirt easier than Matt. My question: What preparation would we need before applying the Zinsser? Thank you. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming all the substrates are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet Zinsser Allcoat Exterior can be used. We would recommend testing for compatibility and adhesion on any previously applied paint. Any bare metal areas should be primed with Zinsser Bulls eye 1-2-3 prior to application. All substrates must be thoroughly cleaned, degreased and lightly sanded prior to application.
Rachael on 2021-06-08 17:07:39 | Question:
I have used this paint on a box trailer built with exterior plywood. Within 3 months dry summer it was flaking off and 'melted' the exterior sealant. I sanded and repainted it and re-did the seals. Six months and into winter it flaked off even more, again reacted with another brand of exterior sealant (Sikaflex) and also had black mould growing on an area. It also reacted with exterior sealants (this time Sikaflex). I am now having to repeat an entire project a third time in less than a year. Is this a bad batch? As it has done nothing it says it does, it is the worst paint I have ever used. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We are sorry to hear of the issues you have had with the paint we have contacted you directly for more information to look into this for you.
Andrea on 2021-06-06 22:27:07 | Question:
Hi, I would like to paint my brown pvc conservatory frames and wanted to know if the Allcoat Exterior Matt in pure white will be the best option to use internally and externally? Thank you |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the upvc is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet this product can be used on internal and external upvc.
Sarah on 2021-05-15 15:45:01 | Question:
Would a light shade cover a previously painted dark colour? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes it will but it may require additional coats to achieve the required colour.
Colin Martin on 2021-05-07 17:02:24 | Question:
I have 3 storage bins I want to revamp the tops of them, would this paint be ok to use and would it cover the 3 storage bin lids. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the storage bins are plastic, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data Sheet this can be used. We would recommend first priming with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3, followed by Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Waterbased.
Stephen Clayton on 2021-05-06 14:39:52 | Question:
Can I use all coat satin on wooden garden furniture |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the wooden furniture is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical data sheet yes this could be used. We would recommend priming any bare areas with Zinsser Cover Stain prior to application.
Laura Lynch on 2021-04-12 06:53:25 | Question:
Hi i'm looking to upcycle a kids playhouse made from plastic. would this product work? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Holly on 2021-04-08 13:29:50 | Question:
can i paint onto an outside brick wall, should i put a layer of masonry paint on the brick wall first? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the brick wall is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend priming first with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 then applying two coats of Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Waterbased. Or to negate the need for the additional primer coat, we would recommend Zinsser AllWeather Exterior Masonry Paint (Solvent Based).
Steve on 2021-04-02 10:35:33 | Question:
I'd like to paint new uPVC soil pipes with Zinsser Allcoat Exterior water-based paint to match our downpipes and gutters (in RAL7032). The downpipes are aluminium and have been powder coated in a Matt finish. Am I best using Matt or Satin on the uPVC pipes? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the powder coating applied to the aluminium is polyester, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend priming with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 prior to application of Zinsser Allcoat Exterior water-based. Matt, satin or gloss finish could be used for this application depending on the appearance you require.

Steve S on 2020-04-09 11:42:13 | Question:
I am needing to paint a large gate that has been previously stained, will I be able to use Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Matt (Water Based) straight on top of the old woodstain? |

Brian Young on 2019-07-08 16:10:58 | Question:
I'm going to painting my house and the external is finished in timber, can i use Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Matt (Water Based) paint. The previous owners use butinox paint which was oil base can i use the Zinsser straight on or do you advise to sand the timber 1st |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Matt (Water Based) is ideal for application to previously painted timber. Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and free of any contamination that may interfere with adhesion. Remove all loose or peeling paint and chalky paint residue. Sand edges of any remaining paint film until smooth. Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Matt (Water Based) is self-priming and will adhere to most sound surface. It bonds to existing glossy paints without sanding. The first coat primes and seals the surface, providing a base for the topcoat.
Simon on 2019-04-23 14:04:13 | Question:
I am looking at painting external tiles on the front of our house. would it be recommended to use the Matte or Satin finish for best longevity |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Both Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Matt (Water Based) and Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) offer a 15 year life expectancy. Matt finishes can harbour more dirt whereas satin or gloss finishes are better at shedding dirt so will look cleaner for longer.
David D on 2018-09-09 10:12:06 | Question:
I am looking to paint a galvanised garage door (currently in white gloss) and upvc front door (in white) with your Allcoat exterior Matt (water based), would this product do both surfaces and do you recommend an undercoat product. Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Matt (Water Based) is more intended for masonry surfaces, it will not adhere as well to these surfaces as Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based), it will also pick up dirt a little easier around the door handles etc. We would suggest you consider the satin which can go onto both surfaces with no primer required. Surfaces must be clean and lightly abraded. Apply 2 coats of the Satin Water based.
M Edwards on 2017-11-21 15:32:38 | Question:
