To achieve 60 minute protection minimum timber thicknesses apply of which approval must be sought before purchase.
Preparation:
All surfaces must be clean and dry. Remove all possible surface contaminates such as grease, smoke residues, silicates etc. Seal water-stain risks with stain blocking sealer suitable to overcoat with water-based acrylic paints. Abrade hard or smooth surfaces with wetted 120 grit wet-or dry abrasive or dust extracting abrader. Rinse off slurry while still damp. When dry, remove any loose or suspect material back to firm edge. Fill and repair any damage to the substrate using a good quality remedial filler.
Application:
Apply Thermoguard Timbercoat and Thermoguard Smoke & Flame Retardant (SFR) Dualcoat at rate stated on specification to protect surfaces & enable project Certification.
Touch Dry: 1 hours / Overcoat: 4 hours in normal conditions.
Ensure fully hard dry before next coat, only apply to dry timber in good drying conditions.
IMPORTANT - The below information from the manufacturer must be read and referred to your relevant authority for approval BEFORE purchase and use.
Half Hour and 1 Hour Resistance To Wood
In line with good common practice, we recommend that approval be sought for the use of our system, outlining our justification for the issuing of the Fire Certificate prior to the product’s use.
Authorities generally accept our Fire Test evidence (copies available upon request) as justification for the provision of One Hour Fire Resistance in cases such as this for up to 1 Hour Fire Resistance, depending upon the thickness of board in question.
We hold independent Fire Tests for Thermoguard Timbercoat to provide One Hour Fire Resistance to a mock-up of a ceiling comprising softwood timber boards on softwood joists, with the boards abutting one another and joined by metal tongues set into the abutting edges of the boards. Whilst the amount of residual undamaged timber was clearly adequate to have withstood office or accommodation design loads, the floor tested in the Fire Test did not have weight imparted to it, as we sought data to work from the test for sites with greatly differing make-ups.
The floor tested achieved One Hour Fire Resistance to BS 476 Part 22, with approximately 7mm of timber joist and board surfaces destroyed to charring during the test. Charring was greater up the open joints between floorboards, reaching 12mm, as one would expect being merely butt-jointed rather than tongue and groove jointed. Provided the calculated residual structure is adequate, we also issue Certification to BS 476 Part 21 to 30 or 60min Fire Resistance. The normal char factor of unprotected softwood for 60 minutes is approx 50mm, thus additional Fire Resistance provided by our Intumescent Paint was approximately 30 minutes.
A Fire Resistance test for 30mins was carried out at Warrington Fire Research Centre in January 2016 to 25mm softwood and 25mm MDF. Uncoated boards burnt through completely during the test.
- Application at 300 microns wet (12m² per 5kg) resulted in loss to char of 7mm on softwood and 5mm on MDF
- Application at 500 microns wet (8m² per 5kg) resulted in loss to char of 3mm on softwood and 2mm on MDF
Thermoguard Timbercoat was filmed by Channel 5 for documentary “Megastructures – Building from Distaster” which recorded in simultaneous parallel test to 18mm softwood that at 6mins uncoated board burnt through, while boards protected with Timbercoat @ 600 microns / 7m² per 5kg lost only 3mm to char at 45mins, with the protected board retaining insulation so that it was safe to put a hand on the reverse face while the burner continued on the front face.
Minimum timber board thicknesses;
- 60min protection - Board must be a minimum of 20mm thick, prevent flame penetration or excessive heat penetration after potential loss of 10mm to charring.
Joists;
- 60min protection - Wood must be able to afford to lose 7mm to charring from exposed faces without collapsing. Not suitable for the topside of floor surfaces that will be walked on.
Applications requiring 30 minute protection only can in most instances be achieved using a 'reduced' specification, for details see Thermoguard Timbercoat 30 Minute System
Note – For advice email [email protected] or call 0113 2455450 (option 2)
Application to OSB/Sterling Board
Only surface spread of flame protection can be provided to OSB, for BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B s1 d0 ONLY see Thermoguard Timbercoat BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System for details.

Question about the product
Benedict on 2023-07-05 18:10:31 | Question:
I have to protect my utility room from my garage. I have a small storage area at ceiling height that overhangs into utility. The floor on the storage is chipboard. I need to find protect that chipboard. I can do this by covering with a fire board but was wondering if I could paint with your family God product? It is 18 mm thick chipboard. It needs to have 30 minute protection from the joists below. The surface area is 9 m². Thanks very much. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Thank you for your enquiry, please provide us with as much of the following information as possible to [email protected]
GENERAL TIMBER SURFACES - Size of surface area to paint - Timber thickness - Level of Fire Protection required (Class 1, Class 0, 30min, 60min, etc.) - Type of timber (i.e. pine, mdf, plywood, etc.) - Type of Timber surface (i.e. T&G, feather edge / shiplap cladding, solid panels / sheets, etc.) - Internal or external - Use (i.e. floor, wall cladding, ceiling, etc.) - Clear or coloured coating required? - Bare or previously coated?
Brian Jarvis on 2023-02-03 16:49:28 | Question:

Thankyou for the enquiry, we will need the information below to assist with this enquiry, please can you email this to [email protected] GENERAL TIMBER SURFACES
David Fox on 2023-01-12 16:29:15 | Question:
Is this suitable for application to plywood? We're looking to use this on an internal partition wall between our garage and reception room on 18mm plywood, the area is 8.45 m2 |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately your timber is too thin to achieve a 60min rating with any product we can recommend.
nick jg on 2020-12-10 14:56:59 | Question:
How long to the product last in an external environment before the coating needs to be redone? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the system is applied as directed in the Technical Data Sheet, the topcoat is intact, regularly checked and maintained then you shouldn’t need to re-apply the intumescent, only the topcoat where needed.
Emma on 2020-05-01 10:19:42 | Question:
This may be a stupid question, but when you say 21m2 is that for one coat or the recommended 3? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The m² pack size is for the complete system to cover that specified area.
A Gordon on 2019-11-13 20:36:31 | Question:
I have Thermoguard Timbercoat paint system previously applied. Is it allowable to apply a regular paint over the top of in order to use a different colour? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Our recommendation is to purchase more of the Thermoguard Topcoat used in the original system in the new colour and finish of your choice. If this is not possible, please see details of Thermoguard Flame Retardant Additive. Full and correctly applied Thermoguard fire protection systems can, in certain instances be overcoated for colour change purposes if necessary however the normal, conventional paint to be used must have the Thermoguard Flame Retardant Additive added before application.

Would Thermoguard be suitable for coating the floorboards and Oak rafters in a cellar to produce 60 minutes protection to meet Fire Officer requirements for the charity shop above (no cooking facilities). Alan Julier |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
To be able to advise on this we would need to know the thickness of the floorboards (also whether they are butt jointed, T&G, etc.) and the dimensions of the rafters (width x depth). Also helpful would be how many square metres of floorboards there were to protect and how many rafters were to be protected and the length of each.
