Wallcoat System
Thermoguard Wallcoat is an intumescent paint basecoat with smoke and flame Retardant properties for upgrading potentially dangerous ‘multi-layer’ previously painted walls & ceilings. It controls surface spread of flame and fire propagation to Class 0 & EN Class B. Total smoke control, flaming droplets and particulates to EN Class B s1 d0. Thermoguard Wallcoat Smoke and Flame Retardant Topcoat is a compatible, water-borne specialist finish that allow owners and operators of buildings to fulfil their Duty of Care for Fire Safety without having to compromise aesthetics by using it to finish the Wallcoat basecoat system.
To Specify, Simply State
To achieve BS EN Class B sl, d0, inspect and prepare in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and apply -
- 1 coat of Thermoguard Wallcoat Insulating Basecoat
- 1 coat of Thermoguard Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Matt or Eggshell Finish
Fire Testing & Certification
Tested at UKAS Fire Test Laboratory -
- Achieved BS EN Class B s1 d0 - Highest standard
We issue a Fire Certificate upon request for each correctly specified project for Insurance, Fire and Building Authority and Client Records against proof of purchase. Certified Fire protection is guaranteed if all instructions are followed on suitable surfaces.
Flamespread & Smoke Protection
When exposed to fire, Thermoguard Wallcoat expands to create a fire protective barrier, insulating surfaces from heat and oxygen and preventing combustion. Thermoguard Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoats (Matt & Eggshell) actively suppress smoke, particles and flaming droplets.
UK Fire Safety Order 2005, Flamespread and Smoke
The Fire Safety Order 2005 requires property managers to comply with current fire standards for corridors, stairways, entrance lobbies etc. Even on non-combustible walls & ceilings, multiple layers of incompatible paints “Multi-Layer” often create the worst Class 4 - EN Class E - Surface Spread of Flame risk.
While the British Class 0 is still accepted, it will soon become defunct, as it has been superseded by the safer standard BS EN Class B s1 d0, with its more rigorous flame-spread protection and control of dangerous smoke and burnt particulates.
NEW EU/BS EN Fire Standard Explained
- EU fire standard BS EN Class B replaces BS476 Class 0
- In 2012 both BS476 and BS EN comply, but BS 476 is rapidly being replaced by the more severe and realistic EN test including air flow.
- BS EN also monitors dangerous smoke. The safest class is s1
- BS EN also measures flaming droplets & burnt particulates. The safest class is d0
- The new safest standard for corridors, stairs etc is BS EN Class B s1 d0.
Finish, Colours and Availability
- Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat is available in Matt or Eggshell finish in White, BS 4800, BS 381C, RAL and NCS colours (not metallic or fluorescent shades). 2 coats may also be required for strong/dark colours - Thermoguard Wallcoat Insulating Basecoat will be provided in a suitable undercoat shade to aid topcoat opacity unless instructed otherwise.
- A clear version is also available for special applications but this must be recommended by our Technical Team before use. The matt finish in clear can in certain applications appear cloudy over very dark substrates so a test should be carried out first to ensure appearance is acceptable before full use.
- Wallcoat is available in White Matt only as it is a basecoat
- Wallcoat and Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat are sold in 25m² and 100m² cans

Richard on 2024-08-14 09:18:00 | Question:
What is the maximum temperature this should be exposed to? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product is not a heat proof paint and must be used as part of a system. Please contact [email protected] with more information on the project so we can assist with a recommendation.
Anthoy Cassidy on 2020-11-23 13:12:39 | Question:
Applied to virgin wood which of your products achieves 1 hour fire protection |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We have sent an email asking for further information.
Laurie on 2019-07-17 12:33:00 | Question:
I am looking to apply an intumescent barrier to an internal wall manufactured from OSB board. Would this be suitable? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would need to know how many square metres are to coat, the level of fire protection required, the thickness of the OSB, whether it is an internal or external environment and whether the surface is bare or previously coated. Please provide this to our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2) or [email protected]
James Jagger on 2019-06-15 12:16:23 | Question:
I am wanted to fit tin plated steel tiles in my log burning stove recess. I wish to paint the tiles white. Please could you advise on the most appropriate primer and top coat? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We have a blog post on Painting the Walls around a Fireplace or Multi Fuel Stove which we would suggest reading for advice before making a decision.
Brian O'Callaghan on 2019-03-26 10:04:05 | Question:
is it possible to paint over existing paint i have to cover some steelbeams with fire retardant paint but the beams have been painted previously |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Steel should only have a compatible primer on before application of an intumescent paint, if there is more than this on the steel then usually this would need to be completely removed back to bare steel and re-primed with an appropriate primer for the intumescent system intended to be used. There are instances where we can offer a system to be applied over an existing paint system but we would need to know more details, please contact our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2) or [email protected] Please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;
Alternatively you can just forward us drawings, fabrication/cutting lists and we'll extract the information from them but in that instance we'd need some guidance as to what to allow for i.e. all steels on first floor, etc.
Jim Jordan on 2019-02-26 11:48:39 | Question:
Can you please advise on which of your products would be suitable for upgrading MDF to achieve a 30 min fire resistance. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would suggest seeking approval from your authority for Thermoguard Timbercoat 30 & 60 Minute System assuming the MDF is at least 10mm thick.
John on 2019-02-24 13:09:53 | Question:
Is it ok to paint over polystyrene ceiling tiles with fire retardant paint |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Unfortunately this product would not provide any level of fire protection to polystyrene ceiling tiles.
Mark Sanderson on 2018-10-11 14:03:04 | Question:
Can this paint be used on a woodchip wallpaper? Regards Mark |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, but to achieve BS Class 1 and 0 you can use the Thermoguard Timbercoat BS Class 1/0 & EN Class B System.
breda Hynes on 2018-08-01 10:44:47 | Question:
I have an open fireplace and want to paint eh surrounding slate tile in the front of the fire place. It will not be touching the file but may get hot due to the open fire of wood and coal. What should I use? I also have an 1879 inglenook fireplace where I want to paint the back of the open fire and the surrounding areas. It is brick but very old. What paint can I use? thanks Breda |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Please see our Blog on Painting the Walls around a Fireplace or Multi Fuel Stove.
Richard Higgs on 2018-04-22 10:58:41 | Question:
Is this product suitable for external application? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Yes, but two coats must be applied in external situations. Not suitable for floor or roof surfaces or areas where water will pond/stand.
jan parry on 2018-03-17 16:59:10 | Question:
Is this suitable for painting cement hearths of solid fuel grates which will have occasional use ? Are the paints heat resistant and if so up to what temperature ? thank you |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Fire protection products are reactive and if the surface gets over 200°C they will react to protect from fire. Over 100°C and coloured finishes like Thermoguard Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat would discolour. If the surfaces you wish to paint around your fireplace do not exceed these temperatures then the Thermoguard Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat would be OK to use.
Pete box on 2017-10-17 10:45:15 | Question:
Please can you tell me how long the working application time is with this product once mixed.
So if I mixed a 100sqm measure will I have enough time to use it
Thank you |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Thermoguard Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat is a single pack product, other than stirring before use there is no mixing of a base and an activator as it is not a two pack product so there is also no 'pot life' as you would get with a two component material.
geoff billing on 2017-05-15 20:04:22 | Question:
can you send sample colors of the paint ? and what is eggshell , is it just where it has a sheen ?
look forward to your reply |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We don't offer samples of fire retardant products, however the colours this product comes in are RAL, BS and NCS which are not unique to the product. These colour ranges are industry standards which are available in a wide range of products so you may be able to find a product locally in the colours you wish to test prior to purchase. With regards to the finishes of Thermoguard Wallcoat Smoke & Flame Retardant Topcoat, Matt has almost no sheen whatsoever and Eggshell offers a subtle sheen level.
Catriona Levshankova on 2016-11-21 13:49:03 | Question:
1. I have an open chimney space with a wood burner that spans two rooms (double sided wood burner). Is this paint suitable to go on the wall of an open chimney space with wood burner? The wall is 18 cms away from the side of the wood burner.
2. Can I get a physical colour chart rather than an on line version?
Many thanks
Catriona |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We've written a blog post to help customers wanting to paint their fire surrounds, read the full article; Painting the Walls around a Fireplace or Multi Fuel Stove.
